Airwars assessment

Two girls died in a reported Turkish or Coalition airstrike on the village of Sab Wayran near Aleppo, Syria.

Manbij Military Council (linked to the SDF) reported that “two sisters were martyred from the family of Ahmad al Rashid Beish Illo after Turkish occupation planes raided their home in the village of Sab Wayran.” It added that four people were injured.

The Syrian Network instead blamed the attack on the Coalition. However the Assad-controlled SANA news agency said the village had been captured by Turkey and its allies, following clashes with the Kurdish SDF.

In August 2017 the US-led Coalition denied involvement in the event, noting that “After a review of available information it was assessed that no Coalition strikes were conducted in the geographical area of the reported civilian casualties.”

Airwars assessment

Multiple sources blamed the US-led Coalition for the deaths of a woman and her seven children at al Baza’a, north east of al Bab. However the Coalition later assessed the claims as ‘Not credible.’ Given Turkey’sd own campaign at the time at Al-Bab, its aircraft may therefore have been responsible.

According to Step News “Coalition planes launch several raids on al Baza’a last night killing eight people including women and children.” The Syrian Observatory did not identify the perpetrators however, noting that “a woman with seven of her children was killed by massacre by warplanes targeted Bazaa village northeast of al-Bab city.”

Syria News Desk reported the following: “A civilian source from al Bab, on condition of anonymity, told Syria news desk , that the planes targeted the old police station and nearby homes on the southern outskirts of town, confirming the presence of several dangerous situations among the injured, who were transferred to hospitals in Al Bab, making it likely that number of deaths will rise during coming hours due to poor medical facilities in the region.

“The source added that the raids resulted in the destruction of the police station building and two houses completely and burning a house and three civilian cars, in addition to considerable material damage to a number of shops and their contents.”

Euphrates Post – which also blamed the Coalition – named the dead.

In an emailed response to a report submitted by Airwars on this and other incidents in December 2016, Coalition officials said the event was presently assessed as ‘Not credible.’

Airwars assessment

Local residents told Airwars researchers that an entire family was killed following alleged Coalition air strikes on their house in Qudis neighbourhood in East Mosul, in the afternoon of December 26th 2016. This was reported in an interview with two witnesses, on June 9th 2017.

The two witnesses, Ala Samir Ahmed and Ali Abdulrazaq, said that the entire family of Abdullah Al Malha died when Coalition airstrike failed to hit the house of a Russian ISIL member (a sniper) and instead hit the neighbouring house. That house had been used by the Al Malha family, who had been displaced after they fled from Guier. They all died in the incident.

In their June 2020 civilian casualty report, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that no Coalition actions were conducted in the geographical area at that time.

Airwars assessment

Local sources reported that ‘hundreds of civilians’ were killed or injured due to Coalition airstrikes and shelling with artillery and missiles, which targeted the ‘Police and other neighborhoods’ in the East and North of Mosul.

News of Iraq said 17 civilians were killed in two separate incidents in the Dhubat (Police) district of Mosul. It noted that the Coalition was responsible for the raids, killing among others a “surgery and fractures [medical] specialist, in addition to the four members of his family”.

This medical specialist was later named by MNN and Mosul Ateka Facebook, who reported that Dr. Talal Mallah (a specialist in orthopedic surgery and traumatology, said Mosul Ateka) and his wife Dr. Suad Al Khashab, their young daughter and eight other relatives.

In another post, News of Iraq said that an officer of the former Iraqi army, Brigadier General Khalid Meteb Al Hayis Al Jarba was killed after “Iraqi government army aviation” bombed his house.

In its May 2017 casualty report, the Coalition classed the even as Non Credible on grounds of available information: “Jan. 14, 2017, near Mosul, via NGO report: After a review of available information and strike video it was assessed that there is insufficient information available to determine if civilians were present or harmed in this strike.”

Airwars requested additional detail from the Coalition, which confirmed it had assessed an allegation approximately 1km from Dhubat. We continue to assess this as a Contested event.

Four civilians were reported killed – three of them possibly children – in alleged Coalition strikes on the village of Shanina.

According to the Syrian Press Centre “Activists said aircraft believed to be from the international coalition targeted civilian houses in the village of Shanina with several air raids, which resulted in the deaths of four civilians, more than seven others were injured in an initial toll, and among the martyrs are three children.”

Halab Today also reported deaths though said the three children were injured not killed: “Four martyrs including an old man and his wife in addition to 7 wounded including three children.” It published an apparent image of the strike location.

Smart News said one Islamic State fighter also died in the attack.

Heavy airstrikes on Raqqa – reportedly by the Coalition – may have caused civilian casualties according to confused reports.

According to Step News “international coalition raids target the grain silos, the finance building, the arts school and al Nai’m roundabout in the city of Raqqa a short while ago causing material and human losses as well as a complete electricity cut in most of the city’s neighbourhoods.”

Local and press sources said that eleven civilians were killed, including three kids, and dozens others were injured in Coalition airstrikes targeting their houses in Mamoon neighborhood, at the west side of Mosul.
