Local sources said that six members of the same family were killed after airstrikes struck their home in Zanjili neighborhood, in West Mosul.

Iraqyoon Agency reported that it was the family of As’ad Younis Majid al-Rawi. The news agency also said that the family was displaced – they had fled from al-Midan to Zanjili neighbourhood.

Yaqein said it was ‘likely’ the work of the international Coalition. The other local sources did not say who was responsible.

Airwars assessment

Local sources and residents reported that five civilians from one Kurdish family were killed after Coalition airstrikes hit their house in Al Saaha neighbourhood near the al Nouri Mosque in Old Mosul.  The event was later admitted by both the Coalition and US forces.

The five died when a missile or bomb reportedly destroyed the house. The victims included: the father, the mother, and the son, his wife and daugther.

A source said to Yaqein Agency that “the bodies are still stuck under the ruins of the house, which is only 150 meters from the al Nouri mosque in the Old Mosul area” and that “the families of the victims set up a condolence register in Duhok.”

A senior Coalition official informed Airwars on July 5th 2017 that “It is primarily Coalition aircraft conducting AIR strikes in Mosul. It has been a number of weeks since the Iraqis flew there.”

In June 2019 the Coalition accepted responsibility for this event. Its monthly civilian casualty report noted: “Coalition artillery conducted a strike against Daesh terrorists. Regrettably, five civilians were unintentionally killed due to their proximity to the strike.” The Coalition additionally provided Airwars with coordinates for this event to within a 100 metre box.

In May 2020 in its annual civilian harm report to Congress, the Pentagon conceded this as a US incident.

Airwars assessment

A local Facebook page and a resident said that one young man named Ahmed Hikmat al-Tai was killed and many families were still under the rubble after air strikes hit the Farouk area (near the Jewish area) in Old Mosul.

Local resident Noor Alniamy called for help for several families in the Farouk area, saying that voices could be heard from under the rubble and that the civil defence would not come to rescue them. This is possibly related to earlier incidents, as the post suggested the families had been under the rubble for five days now.

Local monitor Sowef Ateka reported speaking with a child who had lost family members in the event: “A child we met during the distribution of aid near the victory bridge said all members of her family were killed in the bombing during the liberation of the neighborhood of Farouk. They were under the rubble and were recovered by Salamat.”

Several local sources reported that a family of five was killed and one of the sons – a 4-year-old boy – severely injured after alleged Coalition airstrikes on their house in West Mosul (exact location presently unknown).

Iraqi Spring Media Center quoted MP Riabar Taha of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), who reported the same information.

A local monitor reported the deaths of four named civilians after their home in Dakkat Barka was shelled by an unknown source.

Mosul Ateka reported “The death of Mus’ab Talal al-Qasab (the son of Mukhtar Daga Baraka), his son, his sister and his sister’s daughter. Their bodies are still under the rubble, while the rest of the family is still in the house. They are seriously injured. They appeal to the honorable authorities to speed up their ambulance after the shelling of their house in Daka Baraka area.”

No additional details are presently known.

In April 2019 the Coalition announced that it had classed this allegation of civilian harm as non-credible, noting: “After review of all available strike records it was determined that more likely than not civilian casualties did not occur as a result of a Coalition strike.”

This allegation had previously been closed by the Coalition in March 2018, however it was reopened due to new information, before being closed again in April 2019.

In an incident not previously tracked by Airwars, the Coalition later confirmed the deaths of four civilians in an event in near Mosul.

Their September 2017 civilian casualty report noted: “During a strike on an ISIS defensive fighting position, it was assessed that four civilians were unintentionally killed.”

The Coalition provided Airwars with the location of this incident, accurate to within a one-metre box. The location given placed the event in the al Shafaa neighbourhood, north of the Old City.
