Airwars assessment

One civilian was killed and at least three others were wounded by alleged Russian shelling of the town of Dergachi on March 30, 2022.

Helsinki.org.ua reported that an airstrike on the town of Dergachi around 4pm/5pm in the evening destroyed the city council and private homes, as well as injured at least three people.

Lb.ua quoted the Telegram account of the Dergachi City Council who reported that at least one person was killed and three others were injured. The head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration Oleg Synegubov also stated that at least one person was killed in the shelling. Local sources added that due to the ongoing shelling it wasn’t possible to obtain more information about the number of victims.

The head of the community Vyacheslav Zadorenko told Suspilne News that in addition to the damage to the city council and other buildings, power lines were damaged.

The majority of sources attributed the incident to Russian forces, with multiple local sources reporting that Russian troops launched 47 artillery, mortar, and tank strikes on Kharkiv on March 30th.

On April 10th 2022, three people, including a child, later identified as a seven year old were killed following Russian shelling in Balakliia, according to Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group. The same source reported that the shelling destroyed civilian homes. The deaths were confirmed by the Izyum State Administration.

There were numerous reports that suspected Russian forces shelled the temporarily Russian-held city of Balakliia, Kharkiv.

A Telegram post by Info_BA_News identified the shelling as having occurred on Kyrpychnu street.

This was part of sixty-six reported attacks across various cities on April 10th, as detailed by Telegram user Kharkiv Life and Synegubov.

All sources attributed the shelling to Russian forces.

The head of the Kharkiv Regional State, Oleg Sinegubov, specified that “one person was injured in Dergachy,” and the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group added that according to Vyacheslav Zadorenko, the mayor of Dergachy, the alleged shelling damaged Dergachy’s civilian infrastructure, including several residential buildings and commercial facilities, as well as electricity and gas networks.

Sinegubov, via Telegram, reported that communal services in Kharkiv worked intensely to restore the supply of gas, water, and electricity, where possible.

Between five and eight civilians were killed and up to 10 others were injured by alleged Russian airstrikes/shelling of a residential building on Novobavarsky Avenue, 95 in the Bavaria district of Kharkiv on March 1, 2022.

Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group identified eight people killed, six people injured, and 38 people rescued following the bombing. @SESU_UA stated that two of the people rescued were unblocked from under the rubble, and at the time of reporting people were still being rescued. A Telegram from the Kharkiv Prosecutor’s Office (Prokuratura_kharkiv) reported that five people were killed and 10 people were injured, adding that this was a preliminary number still being established.

RBC News reported that shelling struck Hospital No. 3 and then airstrikes hit a factory and a residential apartment building in Bavaria. The head of the district administration, Tetyana Tsybulnyk, told Suspilne that a bomb hit the fifth floor of a building on Novobavarskiy Avenue, resulting in many injured and people under the rubble. A tweet from @SESU_UA specified that the airstrike hit between entrances two and three (out of six total) of the five floor building.

Svitlana Gorbunova-Ruban, deputy mayor of Kharkiv, told Suspilne that shells also hit the territory of Hospital No. 3 nearby in the Novobarav district. Yurii Sorokolat, director of the city health department, stated that none of the doctors or patients were injured but 9 patients were transferred to Hospital No. 31.

The Kharkiv Prosecutor’s Office (Prokuratura_kharkiv) posted on Telegram that “in total, the enemy fired 3 shots with three rockets, among which the first hit between entrances 2 and 3, resulting in the formation of a funnel with a diameter of 3-4 meters, the second hit the roadway along Novobavarskiy Avenue, 95 in the direction of the village. Pisochyn, as a result of which a funnel with a diameter of 2-2.5 meters was formed, the third rocket hit the territory of the Kharkiv plant of lifting transport equipment on Novobavarskiy avenue, 118, whose buildings were damaged.”

Igor Terekhov, mayor of Kharkiv, told RBC “We are constantly being shelled. A rocket attack was just launched on a residential neighborhood. There are dead, there are victims, the hospital has been destroyed. Therefore, of course, the situation is very difficult. There are dead people, there are wounded. That is why the situation is serious.”

Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group attributed the incident to the Russian Armed Forces, with other sources like Helsinki.org posting similar attributions. A tweet from @olehbatkovych reported that the Russian jet was shot down after his airstrike, according to an official.

On March 18th 2022, alleged Russian bombardment struck the Saltivka area within Kharkiv. The initial reports described a Russian shell striking a residential building, killing one resident.

A wide array of news organizations and social media users reported that Russian shells struck a residential building, killing an elderly man in his apartment. Lb.ua offered the initial report that noted that an elderly man was killed in his home by a Russian shell when the missile struck a residential building. The victim was described as a ninety-six year old Holocaust survivor who survived Buchenwald, Dora-Mittelbau, Bergen-Belson, and Peenemunde. He was also listed as the Vice-President of the International Committee of Buchenwald.

Glavcom.ua News issued a poignant tweet that the victim survived Nazi concentration camps but could not survive “Russia’s denazification rescue operation”. Segodnya.us tweeted that the Buchenwald and Dora-Mittelbau Concentration Camp Memorial mourned the death of this Holocaust survivor.

Hromadske News offered a comprehensive report about the strike, quoted the victim’s daughter. She gave details about her father’s killing, saying that “only bones remained on the bed’s armored mesh, as he was lying”. Mayor Ihor Terekhov asked the city council to help remove the remains and offer financial aid to bury the man.

A plethora of news agencies, including Suspilne Media, CBS News, Nikvesti News, and Twitter users @Israel Threads, @Grey Kharkiv, and Firso Walex all offered reports on the death of a Holocaust survivor allegedly killed by Russian forces.

Airwars assessment

On April 14th 2022, at least seven and up to ten civilians were killed and between 13 to 30 were injured, including at least one child, when Russian forces shells and gunfire hit evacuation buses in the village of Borova, Izyum district of Kharkiv. Kharkiv Today reported that evacuation from the region began on April 4th after the area became under temporary Russian occupation. Other local sources noted that attacks by Russian forces on evacuation buses were common.

Interfax news reported that four people wounded by the shelling of evacuation buses were in serious condition. Interfax news also reported that on Borovka village council’s Facebook page it stated that “according to our information, there are 7 wounded in Brovaya hospital, 4 of them in serious condition, there is one wounded child. The hospital is in urgent need of medication, including anaesthetics, as well as food and clothing for the injured.” It also reported that due to the destroyed roads and bridges in the area, it is impossible to bring medicine and other vital aid, “as well as the fact that the Russian occupiers prohibit movement between villages in the community.”

Dialog.ua news reported that “the tragedy happened on Thursday April 14th near the village of Borova, near the Russian occupied town of Izyum. The Russian Armed Forces opened fire on buses carrying civilians who were trying to leave the site of the fighting. Judging by the footage made public, the strike was carried out by Russian artillery. Two vans were seriously damaged. Seven people were killed in the attack and 27 others were injured with varying degrees of severity.”

Suspilne Kharkiv reported on Telegram the highest number of dead and injured, stated that “about 10 people were killed as a result of the shelling of civilian buses by the Russian military near the village of Borova in Kharkiv region on April 14, and up to 30 civilians were wounded, Dmytro Chubenko, a spokesman for the Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s office told Suspilne. The exact number of victims, the circumstances and the route of the buses are being established by law enforcement officers – Borova is under temporary occupation.”

Zdorova Luganschina reported on Faceook that “recently a tragedy took place that claimed lives and cut off the only way we could deliver vital medicines to you. The carrier’s minibuses were shelled near the village of Borova… the buses were carrying parcels with medicines, so some of the medicines you ordered unfortunately did not arrive.”

Rayon.in.ua reported that “under the procedural control of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a pre-trial investigation was launched into the violation of the laws and customs of war combined with premeditated murder… according to the investigation, on April 14 2022, Russian serviceman fired at evacuation buses with civilians in the village of Borova, Izyum distict.”  The pre-trial investigation was being conducted by the SBU Office in Kharkiv region.

Kharkiv Today also reported that since April 4th when evacuations began from Boroyava, “half of the 15,000 residents of Borovaya have left.”
