A possible third US drone strike on May 12th 2012 struck an alleged al Qaeda hideout in Al-Aeen area in central Shabwa, killing at least six militants, reports said. There are currently no known reports of civilian harm.

A local security official told Xinhua about the incident and claimed it was a U.S. drone strike. Xinhua was the only source that mentioned this incident as separate from the other incidents on the same day (USYEM076-B and USYEM077-B).

One civilian doctor was allegedly killed by LNA shelling on Wadi Al Rabie.

Al Wasat said: “The field medicine center mourned the doctor Ayman Abdel Hamid Al-Haramah, who was killed in the clashes areas south of Tripoli.

The field medicine center said, Saturday, ‘The field medicine and support center mourns the martyr of duty Dr. Ayman Abdel Hamid Al-Haramah, who was martyred this morning Saturday while fulfilling his national and humanitarian duty to save the wounded and injured in the clashes that have taken place in the suburbs of the capital Tripoli since Thursday.'”

Ahmed Al Shar said he was killed by a bullet.

The GNA-led Burkan Al Ghadab operation claimed that his ambulance was targeted by warplanes.

His family later filed a lawsuit against the LNA leader Khalifa Haftar saying: “54. Plaintiff Abdulhameed Al-Harramah’s son, Dr. Ayman Al-Harramah, was always
dedicated and committed to humanitarian work. He worked alongside the Children’s
Hospital as a member of many civil society organizations related to humanitarian
activities.
55. He and his colleagues founded the ‘All Doctors Foundation’ before the revolution of
2011. It provided a variety of services, including the distribution of recordings of
additional lectures that medical students and other students were unable to attend or
have no material resources.
56. On April 6, 2019, in the Spring Valley area, also known in Arabic as ‘Wady Al-
Rabii’, Dr. Ayman al-Harramah was doing his work providing medical care and
saving lives in a civilian field hospital when Defendant Haftar indiscriminately
bombed the hospital, killing Dr. Ayman al-Harramah.

Airwars assessment

An alleged US drone strike killed between eight and 10 suspected Al Qaeda militants on the road between the town of Qatn and the village of Khasha in the Hadramout province at 7.30am on August 31st, 2012. There were no reports of civilian harm.

@basselabowardh was among the first to tweet that a drone was responsible for an attack that killed eight people. There were a series of reports that included discrepancies concerning the number of individuals who were killed. Journalist @ahmadalwosabi and @bamakhrmh both tweeted that eight people were killed, with the former specifically describing the missile fired as “American”. Eight was the generally accepted number as a Reuters report noted eight deaths, citing an anonymous member of the Yemeni Defense Ministry. The Nashwan News reported that eight suspected Al Qaeda operatives were killed, and this report was mirrored by Xinhua and Bloomberg News.

However, @Alraimediagroup and the Hadath newspaper both reported that nine individuals were killed in the strike, and the Syrian News Network reported that ten suspected militants died in the strike. Sadasaida.com and Anawen.net both listed the death toll at nine following the strike. Albawaba News reported that eight militants were killed in a “remote location”, citing an anonymous local Yemeni official. The same official said the men who were killed were carrying machine guns and explosives and were traveling to “launch an attack”. Suhf.net tweeted (@suhfnet_ye) reported that Al Qaeda militants were killed in a “U.S. plane attack” but did not reference any civilian deaths.

Sadasaida.com referred to the location of the strikes as a vehicle in the Al-Khasha area while Nashwan News quoted AFP who reported that a four-wheel drive vehicle on the road between the town of Qatn and the village of Khasha was struck by a drone.

The Yemen defense ministry subsequently announced that Khaled Musalem Batis (aka Bates or Batees) died in the strike. Batis had been captured previously by security forces but escaped prison during the 2011 uprising. He was described as a top Al Qaeda militant wanted for allegedly masterminding a 2002 Al Qaeda attack on a French oil tanker MV Limburg. A Bulgarian sailor died in that attack.

In an email to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, a US spokesperson stated that a CENTCOM strike had targeted ISIS militants in Al Bayda governorate on November 10th 2017, killing two. This confirmed earlier local reports that a US drone strike had killed two alleged militants in or near Sirar Jusham, in the Qayfa area, on that afternoon. There were no known associated reports of civilian harm.

According to Hunaradaa and Yemen Shabab Net, the strike targeted a room used to guard khat in Al-Masyad, northeast of Sirar Jusham.

Some local-language social media sources suggested that at least one US strike in the Qayfa area had targeted at least one IS or AQAP “training camp”. One, @abwoyousef707, claimed that strikes were launched in the Azla Khubza and al-Namous “region” of Qayfa.  It was unclear whether these sources reflected reporting of at least one unique strike event, or described the same strike.

While most sources indicated that those killed were ISIS militants, a few instead suggested that the dead were members of AQAP. Both organisations had previously been reportedly targeted in the area.

Though most gave a death toll of two, some social-media sources, such as @hamrinnews, suggested that “dozens” were killed. As such, Airwars has assessed that a minimum of two were killed, with a maximum of twenty-four, to reflect the claim of “dozens”.

Khabar News reported that a drone had targeted an AQAP site in “Bujsh Al-Hodeidah”, killing two “foreigners”, according to a report by Yemenat. The original Khabar article could not be found by Airwars.  One other source, @YemenNewsApp, also indicated that the two killed were “foreigners” affiliated with AQAP, but no further information was given on this claim.

One source, Yemen Shabab, reported that a US drone strike had killed three alleged AQAP militants driving in the Mashreif area of Bayda governorate, on August 22nd 2019. There were no known associated reports of civilian harm.

One other Twitter source, @tlaal661, suggested on August 22nd that a “second” US strike had targeted AQAP in Marib governorate. The Mashreif area lies on the border between Bayda and Marib.

It is possible that these sources instead reflect late reporting of an alleged US strike in the same area overnight from August 20th-21st (USYEMTr203).

Given the vagueness of the Twitter source, this event has been assessed as a “single source” claim. On October 4th 2019, US Central Command told New America that no US military strikes had been conducted since June 24th 2019. This does not however preclude this having been a possible CIA action, or a clandestine US military action.

ANF reported: “In Shengal, areas where civilian settlements and Serdeşt hospital are located, were bombed. According to the first information, there are some injured civilians. In addition, the people suffered material damages as a result of the bombing carried out by the Turkish state.”

Gilgo tweeted: “Injured civilians reported by Ezidi locals in Zerdeşt hospital near Şengal as a result of Turkish air raids. Airstrikes continue after a 40 minutes break. Difficult to get reports out due to intensity of bombardment.”

The New Arab published additional information on the strikes without mentioning civilian harm: “A military official said in the fourth regiment of the Iraqi army stationed in the vicinity of Sinjar that fighters targeted between the hours of twelve and a half and twelve and forty minutes, Sunday, locations and caves inside Mount Sinjar, indicating in a telephone conversation with the New Arab, that columns of smoke were seen rising from the place before To return the aircraftMinutes later to target other locations in the same area, and he heard the sounds of secondary explosions believed to be caused by a pile of weapons or ammunition.

He added, ‘The sites belong to most of the units,’ referring to the militia of Sinjar Protection Units, the local arm of the PKK in Iraq.”

A 2017 US counterterrorism operation in Yemen killed Ibrahim al Asiri, a “senior al-Qa’ida bomb maker and terrorist coordinator”, US President Donald Trump announced on October 10th 2019. This statement confirmed several 2018 reports that al Asiri had likely been killed in a US drone strike in Marib governorate during the second half of 2017.

A July 2018 United Nations report indicated that, according to “some Member States”, al Asiri “may have been killed” in the second half of 2017. Yemeni officials and a tribal leader subsequently confirmed to the Associated Press that al Asiri had been killed by a US drone strike: “a Yemeni security official said that al-Asiri is dead; a tribal leader and an al-Qaida-linked source also said that he was killed in a U.S. drone strike in the eastern Yemeni governorate of Marib”, according to the report.

According to the tribal leader, al Asiri was killed alongside “two or four” of his associates, while standing next to his car. “He added that al-Asiri’s wife, who hails from the well-known al-Awaleq tribe in the southern governorate of Shabwa, was briefly held months ago by the UAE-backed forces and later released”.

While multiple officials initially told CNN that they were “weighing evidence” that al Asiri had been killed, senior US officials later told CBS, Reuters and Fox News that they were “confident” of his death. An official told Reuters in August 2018, however, that “the usual fallout from a senior militant being killed, like a eulogy from Yemen’s al Qaeda branch, known as Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), had not appeared”. Reuters further reported at the time that “separate U.S. intelligence officials said they do not consider the available evidence conclusive”. His death was confirmed by the 2019 White House statement.

Al Asiri is believed to have been behind the “underwear bomb” attempt to down an airliner over Detroit on Christmas Day 2009, which failed, and other foiled aviation-related terror attacks. “Given al Asiri’s past role in plots against aviation, this would represent a serious blow to operational capability,” the United Nations report stated. Other commentators, however, including Gregory D. Johnsen writing in The Atlantic, cast doubt on the level of threat posed by al Asiri.

Given the uncertainty regarding the exact date and location of the strike, Airwars has created this event to cover the six month period in which the strike allegedly occurred. It is possible that al Asiri was killed by one of the other alleged US strikes in Marib tracked elsewhere by Airwars in this period. However, we have been unable to definitively tie his death to any other known events.

This will confirm for the first time that Ibrahim al-Asiri, a senior al-Qa’ida bomb maker and terrorist coordinator, was killed two years ago in a United States counterterrorism operation in Yemen. Al-Asiri built explosive devices that were used in the failed Christmas Day 2009 underwear bomb attack and the disrupted printer cartridge bomb plot in 2010. He also built an explosive device intended to be used against a passenger aircraft in 2012, and the device used in the attempted assassination of the former Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. Al-Asiri’s death significantly handicapped al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula. The United States will continue to hunt down terrorists like al-Asiri until they no longer pose a threat to our great Nation.
