Airwars assessment

Over 50 civilians were injured in a heavy aerial bombardment of Beit Hanoun by Israeli forces on May 14th, 2021, multiple sources reported.

While all other sources only reported injuries, one source @QudsNen, reported four deaths but it seems that this is likely referring to the over deaths in North Gaza. No further information was provided on the alleged deaths and a quote from resident Mohammed al-Zoni provided to Al Jazeera specifically mentions that no one was killed in the attack.

There was also not much information on who was injured, although multiple sources report that women and children were among the wounded.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights reported that a heavy bombardment began at around midnight and lasted two hours, with three places targeted, including Beit Hanoun. The al-Ba’li Street in Beit Hanoun was especially hit, it said. Al Jazeera reported that an “entire residential area in Beit Hanoun was devastated”.

While not confirming this specific incident, the Israeli Defence Forces did release a statement saying that an operation of 160 aircraft had “struck over 150 underground targets in the northern Gaza Strip” over the course of the night. Beit Hanoun is in northern Gaza. Alongside airstrikes, hundreds of artillery shells and dozens of tank shells were fired, it said. The statement added that the purpose of the operation was to damage underground tunnels built by Hamas.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Mohammed al-Zoni, a resident of the area hit, said that as many as 30 houses were destroyed and “Everything that has to do with life has been destroyed,” he said. “Cars, carts, fields … everything.” No warning was given prior to the assault.

Taher al-Kafarneh, 68, gave the Guardian the following account detailing the chaos. He says he was sheltering in a house with about 150 people at the time:  “At about midnight, the intense bombardment began with rockets from each side in addition to artillery, and the street was bombed with violent and continuous missiles.” It is unclear if he means from around the vicinity or from both Palestinian forces and Israeli sources when he mentions “rockets from each side”.

He continues: “A shell from a plane or artillery … I don’t know … hit the last floor of the house, in which some of my children and their children stayed, and the electricity of the house was cut off … Everyone was screaming. About 40 to 50 people from the house were injured from the bombing, and we escaped on foot, until ambulances arrived. Even then they could not reach the house because of bombing in the street. So people started carrying the injured.”

Haitham al-Kafarneh, another resident who may be from the same family as the man quoted in the Guardian article, said to Wafa news that an Israeli reconnaissance plane fired a missile near his house to force its residents to evacuate.

Al Watan voice reported the use of naval boats, alongside artillery shelling and airstrikes. No other source reported naval involvement, but there were other mentions of artillery shelling.

The incident occured around midnight.

Airwars assessment

A civilian may have been killed and another wounded in an alleged Israeli strike in the town of Bani Suhaila on May 14, 2021.

Reporting about strikes on Bani Suhaila seem to indicate that two separate locations were struck with missiles. Sources mostly either reported the death of a civilian and the injury of another as a result of a group of people being targeted in the area or reported a house being hit but did not mention any casualties. @aeinnews reported the strike hit agricultural land but also did not mention casualties. There was no information on the identity of the reported victims.

It is possible that the sources reporting the civilian harm are referring to an incident recorded in entry ISPT054. In this a man reportedly from Bani Suhaila was killed and another injured in a strike that targeted a group of people. Those sources report it in a slightly different place, Absan Alkubra, but this lies very close to Bani Suhaila. We have included a range in the civilian casualty estimate to reflect this possibility.

Sources either reported the use of airstrikes, rockets, missiles or shells.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

At least six civilians, including three women and two children, were injured in a reported Israeli airstrike on a house in Jabalia city on May 14, 2021.

The majority of sources reported six injuries, including a civilian in critical condition. The Palestinian Centre of Human Rights and Al Haq said the victims included three women and two children. Both reported that the injured were taken to the Indonesian hospital where two of the injuries were described as serious and the rest moderate. Shihab reported that the number of people injured rose from six to nine.

The house belonged to the Abd Rabbo family. @ramy3zat tweeted that the house of his cousin, Shadi Abd Rabbo, and Shadi’s brothers, was targeted without warning. Two sources said it was completely destroyed.

The Israeli Defense Forces tweeted that “Recently, fighter jets and aircraft attacked the homes of three Hamas terrorist operatives who serve as terrorist infrastructure and weapons depots… 2. Shadi ‘Abd al-Hadhi – an operative in Hamas’ parachute formation. His house, which was located in the center of the Strip, contained paragliding unit equipment.” It is possible that this strike is related to this incident.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights said the house was hit with three missiles at 6.30pm.

The incident occured at 18:30:00 local time.

Airwars assessment

At least one man, identified as a member of the Mujahid Qassami, was killed and three others were injured in an alleged Israeli drone strike on Deir Al-Balah.

According to Al Mezan, Mohammed Khaled Al-Tawashi, 21, a resident of Deir Al-Balah, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Al Aqsa Hospital at 8:30am. He was killed in an Israeli drone strike the previous evening near his home.

Palestinian Centre for Human Rights added that the drone strike had occurred at approximately 7:00pm the night before on agricultural land behind a home.

Both Al Mezan and Palestinian Centre for Human Rights reported that Al-Tawashi’s body wasn’t found until the morning after he was killed. However, multiple sources, including @uunionnews and @GazaNewsOfficia reported that “a martyr and 3 injuries arrived at Al-Aqsa Hospital after targeting in Deir al-Balah” on May 13th. It is unclear if this is the same incident.

Al Qassam Brigades posted a memorial on their website for Mohamed Khaled Al-Tawashi, who they identified as a “Mujahid Qassami”. @SafaPs also tweeted that a resistance site was bombed in Deir al-Balah. None of the sources referred to Al-Tawashi as a civilian.

All of the sources attribute the strikes to Israel. The Israeli Defense Forces released a statement that “17:25 – IDF aircraft attack the operational apartment of the deputy commander of Hamas’ Jabalya battalion in the northern Gaza Strip, from which the latest attacks were conducted. In addition, the IDF attacked three other operational apartments, of a company commander in the Sajaiya battalion in the northern Gaza Strip, a company commander in Shabura in the northern Gaza Strip and a company commander in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip.”

The incident occured at approximately 7:00 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

Two people, one a civilian and one a child identified to be a member of Mujahideen Brigades, were killed and seven others were injured in an alleged Israeli drone strike and/or artillery shelling near Nada 19, a high-rise building in Beit Hanoun, on May 13, 2021.

Al Mezan reported that at around 1:45pm, “Israel’s air force fired a missile at a group of people near Nada 19, a high-rise building in Beit Hanoun, killing Khaled Imad al-Qanou, 17, and inflicting injuries on eight others.” On May 19th, they added that Firas Alaa Mohammed Al-Bahri, 20, died from wounds he sustained in the May 13th airstrikes from shrapnel and he was pronounced dead at Al-Shifa Hospital at 11:00am.

Defence for Children – Palestine identified the strikes as occurring around 12:40 p.m. near the Gaza perimeter fence in North Gaza’s Izbat Beit Hanoun and attributed at least one missile being fired from an Israeli drone as being responsible. A Facebook post by Ehab Al Kafarna identified artillery shells as being what killed Khaled.

World Now News provided details that amongst those injured, there were many serious injuries and various sources pointed out that serious injuries were taken to al-Shifa hospital while the other injured were taken to the Indonesian hospital.

A post by LO.Samed on Facebook identified Khaled Imad al-Qanou as a high school student at Khalil Al-Rahman Secondary School for Boys in the 12th grade. The Ministry of Education also released a statement mourning Khaled and the other students killed in the conflict.

Sources were conflicted as to whether Khaled was to be considered a civilian or not. Various sources referred to Khaled as a civilian, including the New York Times, which included him in their list of children civilians killed in the Gaza conflict. However, the New York Times later published a story with more details, including a statement from the Mujahideen Brigades that Mr. al-Qanou was killed “within the Sword of Jerusalem Battle,” the name that militants in Gaza gave to the latest war but it did not explicitly state whether he was participating in the fighting when he died. The Mujahideen Brigades said Khaled was 20, but official health records and his family members say that he was 17, born on Jan. 10, 2004.

Mr. al-Qanou’s older brother, Osama, told the New York Times that his sibling joined the Mujahideen Brigades earlier this year after members of the group pressured him for months to join their ranks, offering money and access to weapons. “They exploited him,” said Osama al-Qanou, who added that his family was not supportive of his becoming a member of the group. Mr. al-Qanou added that his family was so deeply opposed to his brother’s joining the Mujahideen Brigades that they refused to allow members of the group to pay their respects in the mourners’ tent they erected following his death. “We kicked them out in front of everyone,” he said.

All of the sources attributed the strikes to Israel.

The incident occured at approximately 1:45 pm local time.

The victims were named as:

Airwars assessment

Three Israeli missiles hit and completely destroyed a four story house belonging to the Al-Aloul family on Beit Lahia Project Street in the vicinity of the Al-Qassam Mosque. The attack killed four members of the same family and injured dozens more, according to several sources.

Those killed were all of the Amn family and were pulled from the rubble of the collapsed building. They were named by multiple sources as 51 year old Muhammad Ibrahim Amen, and his three daughters; 22 year old Warda Amn, Hadeel Amn, and Walaa Amn.

B’Tselem collected testimony from Muna Aman, 47, mother of six, who lost her husband and three of her daughters in the incident: “On 13 May 2021, at around 11:00 P.M., I woke up suddenly in complete darkness. There was debris, dust and smoke all around me. I couldn’t see anything. I had terrible pain all over my body, and it felt like things were piercing it. I also felt burns on my body and face. The pain was so strong, I screamed. Suddenly, one of my daughters came, I don’t know which one, and pulled me out. Just then, I heard another missile and lost sight of her. The place filled with smoke and dust. Then the paramedics came. I asked them to look for my daughters. They told me they’d take care of me first and then look for them. I lost consciousness and woke up the next morning at the ICU in a-Shifaa Hospital in Gaza City. I asked my relatives about my children, and they said they were alright. A few days later, the doctors moved me to the orthopedic department, where I was told my husband Muhammad had been killed. I went into shock and cried. A few minutes later, I was told that three of my daughters had also been killed – Hadil, Warda and Walaa. I went into shock. They were my hope, my whole life, especially Hadil, who was the most spoiled and was very attached to me. It was a shock for me. I never thought anything like that would happen to me. I don’t know how to go on living. After 14 days at a-Shifaa Hospital, I was transferred to the burn unit at al-’Awda Hospital because I had burns on my face and hands and shrapnel all over my body. I have burns on my head and a fractured left leg. They put a metal plate in. I’m still suffering. I’m in a great deal of pain, and I’m receiving treatment that’s expected to take months.”

Yusef Aman, 15, who lost his father and three of his sisters in the incident, also provided testimony: “On Thursday, 13 May 2021, I woke up in the middle of the night and found myself in the passageway between our building and the building next door, which belongs to the al-’Alul family. There was rubble underneath me and on top of me and a blanket over my head. I was very scared and started shouting, “Help! Help! Get me out!” No one answered me. Suddenly I heard an explosion in our apartment, and I also heard people screaming and crying and calling for the neighbors and paramedics to help. It terrified me, because I heard the screaming of people who were trapped under the rubble with no one to save them or help them get out. I was scared I’d stay under the rubble and no one would come help me, that I’d die under the rubble before the paramedics got to me. But a few minutes later, civilian rescue teams came, and someone took the debris off me. I heard him say, “Martyr, martyr.” He meant me, but then he discovered I was alive. I leaned on him and we started walking. I could barely walk, because I was injured all over my body. I felt like my left leg was broken. I couldn’t step on it. Then the civilian rescue man had to let me go, and I carried on by myself. I crawled on the ground. I saw a little girl, our neighbor from the Abu Jarad family. She was lying on the ground.  She grabbed onto my right leg, and the two of us crawled together to get away from the rubble that filled the street. I had a hard time crawling on the piles of debris. They injured me. At some point, paramedics showed up and took me to an ambulance. I was taken to the Kamal ‘Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya, and from there transferred to the Indonesian Hospital in Jabalya Refugee Camp, where I had surgery on my leg. They took shrapnel out of various parts of my body and put a metal plate in my lower left leg. Then, some relatives came to the hospital. They told me my father had been killed and so had three of my sisters. I went into shock. I never imagined I’d hear such a thing. This loss has caused me terrible pain.”

Most sources put Hadeel’s age at 18, however one source reported that she was 19 years old and another that she was 21 years old. Most sources reported Walaa’s age as 24, however two sources claimed she was 25. Multiple sources also reported that Walaa was eight months pregnant at the time.

A further 27 civilians were reported injured by multiple sources, including six women and ten children. Two sources also reported that three houses collapsed that were sheltering 91 civilians, including 24 women and 41 children.

Two sources reported that the incident occurred at approximately 11.50pm.
