Airwars assessment

Up to three civilians were injured in alleged Israeli strikes on an onion factory, reportedly used by Iranian militias as a weapon and ammunitions depot, in Al Salamiya on June 24th, 2020, according to local sources.

The Times of Israel identified the strike location as being “an onion-processing plant and a cattle feed factory converted by Iranian forces into ammunition warehouses”.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that Israeli strikes targeted an onion factory, which was partially turned into a weapon and ammunitions depot by Iranian forces. According to the SOHR, “their destruction led to huge explosions that lasted for several hours, which caused panic and terror to the people and the flying shrapnel injured civilians.”

Nziv.net also reported that after the attack, “the sounds of ambulances rushing to the attacked site were heard. Confirmed reports confirm that there were casualties at the sites attacked.” In this specific strike, the cultural center was the alleged location of the strikes.

Based on what they identified as reliable sources, the SOHR wrote that the Russian forces had informed the director of the onion factory so that it could be evacuated before the Israeli strikes. According to the SOHR, “the Israeli airstrikes destroyed two of the hangars that were weapons depots, while the third remained, which was rented by a person to manufacture ‘chips’.”

@jamlyyyyy reported that three injured people that were hit by shrapnel were brought to the National Hospital in Salamiya, but the source did not specify whether the victims were civilians. Baladi News also reported three injured but stated that the victims were not identified.

According to Ynet News, an eyewitness told RT: “Everything happened very quickly, it was a matter of seconds. From the moment we heard the sound of the planes until the explosion, seconds, even moments passed. The blow knocked us down as we tried to go up to the second floor to check on the children.”

The regime-controlled Syrian Arab News Agency stated that, according to a military source, Israel targeted several locations in Salamiya and Saboura in Hama governorate at exactly 00:45 AM. The source stated: “As soon as the enemy missiles were discovered, our air defences dealt with them and worked to pursue them and targeted them and shot down a large number of them before [they could] reach their targets, damages were limited to materials.”

@thawraa_syrv posted photos of the cultural centre in the city of Salamiya, writing that it “was which was used by the Iranian militias as their headquarters, the images show its complete destruction as a result of the Israeli raids last night.”

Orient News reported that “activists from Al Salamiya stated that the aerial bombardment of the city was the first of its kind, and affected both the onion factory in the city, a military centre run by Iranian militias in Al Saboura (east of the city), and a military site on an archaeological road, indicating that these places may [have] contained large quantities of arms and ammunition, due to the massive explosions caused by the bombing.”

Orient added: “Although Assad’s media did not report any casualties in the Salamiyah area, activists confirmed that the Salamiyah hospital contained an unknown number of casualties due to the bombing.”

Baladi News wrote that a field source had told Russian press agency Sputnik that it was likely that the shelling came from the Al Tanf area, which is controlled by American forces. Earlier reports indicated that Israeli forces had started to use to base for strikes on the Syrian regime and Iranian militias.

In a special interview with News 13, the commander of the Ramat David base, Colonel III, did not confirm the attack, but agreed to say that “the goal is to reduce the Iranian military presence in Syria and all its elements that threaten the State of Israel.” They added they seven people were killed but did not specify if they were civilians or militants. A tweet from @yonibmen specified that of the seven killed were “5 Iranians and 2 Syrians killed in an Israeli attack in Syria, targets were attacked in the Hamat, a-Sahna and Swida areas in the south”.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Location

بناية غازي الشوا, Ghazi Al Shawa building, the Gaza Strip

Airwars assessment

Two civilians, including a ten-year old girl, were killed and seven other civilians were injured by shrapnel from an Israeli airstrike on a building in the Rimal neighbourhood of Gaza City during the early evening of 17th May, 2021.

Ziyad Kamal Abdullah Abu Dayer, aged 45 or 55, was killed in the strike, along with his niece, Rafif Morshid Kamal Abu Dayer, aged 10. They were eating a meal with relatives in a private residential garden beside the Ghazi al-Shawa building when the strike took place, between 5.45 and 6.45 p.m. in the evening.

In addition, 10 or more other civilians were reportedly wounded, including Rafif’s two brothers, other members of the Dayer family, and Health Ministry employees. Incident ISPT097, which occurred close by and involved the Health Ministry and clinic, records the health employees injured (2 two workers from the Ministry of Health and Dr Majed Salha from the Al-Rimal clinic), putting the injury toll in this incident at 7 civilians injured.

B’Tselem provided testimony from Muhammad Abu Dayer, 16, Ziad’s son: “At 3:15 P.M., I went back to my uncle’s house. We arranged mattresses on the balcony to sit and eat. My father sat on a chair, reading the Quran on his phone. My uncle’s daughter Rafif, was sitting next to him drawing. I sat with the rest of the family – my mother, my uncle, his wife and their eight sons – on the mattresses. Suddenly, we heard something whistle through the air. Then there was smoke and dust, and bits of debris and stones rained down on us. I got up to look for everyone. I put a hand on the door and discovered it had no handle. The water tanks had been damaged, and the water leaking from them helped clear the smoke and dust. It also put out the fire that had started burning in the mattresses and sofas. Only then did I start seeing what was happening around me. I saw everyone wounded and bleeding. I looked for my father and found him on the sofa, wounded in the head. Part of his head had fallen to the floor. When I saw that, I screamed in horror. I was in shock. It was the first time I’d seen anything like it. I’ve never seen anyone injured or killed. I went out to al-Wehdah Street. My cousins Ziad, 18, and Muhammad, 21, came out after me. They were looking for an ambulance. A few minutes later, ambulances arrived. They took away my cousin Rafif, who’d been hit in the head and neck and killed. Then they put my father in the ambulance. He was dead. I went with them to the hospital. I was examined and they found I was injured in my shoulder and left toe. The rest of my family were examined, too. That evening, at 8:00 P.M., we buried my father. Then we went to my uncle Khaled’s house in the a-Sabra neighborhood, because it’s no longer possible to live at my uncle Murshed’s house. It was a hard, sad day. My father is dead and I’m alone. I lost the person who was dearest to me. He was afraid something would happen to me in the airstrikes and that I’d be killed, but in the end, it happened to him. I still can’t believe it happened and don’t want to believe it. I feel like I’m living in a nightmare. I’m still young and already an orphan. I lost my father, who was my whole world and gave me hope in this world. He meant everything to me.”

Images taken by Getty Images show at three children, a woman, and a man receiving medical treatment at Al Shifa Hospital following the strikes.

The New York Times reported that Rafif loved to draw and that “she had sketched one of the high-rise buildings that an Israeli airstrike destroyed in Gaza City two days earlier and had started to color in her drawing when her mother called her for lunch. “You can go back to drawing after you eat,” her mother said. The girl sat down for lunch with 13 relatives in a private residential garden. Minutes later, Israel attacked a building nearby, an uncle said. Shrapnel and rubble struck Rafeef. She and another uncle were killed.”

The Electronic Intifada gave details that Ziad Abu Dayer and his family had actually taken shelter at the Al Hawa building that day because the family’s own home had been razed during the previous day’s bombing. “We thought it would be a safe place to hide,” said Ziad’s son Kamel, 16. Kamel had just checked to see if his father wished to eat something before the bombing occurred. Ziad was reading the Quran and wanted to continue doing so. “The bombing started a few minutes later,” said Kamel. “Black smoke quickly spread all around the place. We couldn’t see anything. I eventually found my father lying on the ground.” Kamel, who was injured in the arm, accompanied his father as he was rushed to hospital by ambulance. The ambulance took longer than it should have to arrive because Israel had severely damaged the adjoining road, ambulance drivers encountered difficulties traveling to and from the hospital.

In an interview with @AlMamlakaTV, the son of Ziyad and cousin of Rafif said that “I still have my father’s blood on the ground”, recounting the aftermath of the strike that caused injuries to so many members of his family.

The top three storeys of the al-Shawa building were destroyed in the strike. The building is mixed-use residential and commercial, housing organisations including the American Children’s Relief Foundation, the Qatar Red Crescent and the Islamic National Bank headquarters, along with private medical practices.

Qatar’s foreign minister released the statement that “The State of Qatar expresses its strong condemnation of the Israeli occupation’s bombing of the Qatari Red Crescent Society building in the besieged Gaza Strip, which resulted in several deaths and injuries,” the statement said.

The Al-Remal medical clinic nearby was also severely damaged in the strike, rendering inoperable Gaza’s only Covid-19 testing site, according to the New York Times. Other nearby buildings damaged in the strike include the Gaza Ministry of Health, an orphanage and the Palestine Feminist Foundation.

The Danish Refugee Council confirmed that they had been working with Rafif as part of their psycho-social support programme for children experiencing conflict trauma.

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs commented that the bombing of the Shawa building and its impact on civilians and essential infrastructure “raises serious concerns over a possible indiscriminate and disproportionate attack under international humanitarian law.”

The IDF released a statement at 18:59 that “Fighter jets recently attacked the main Hamas of the Hamas terrorist organization’s internal security organization in the Rimal neighborhood, in the northern Gaza Strip.”

Anadolu Agency pointed out that the strikes occurred without warning.

The incident occured between 5:45 pm and 6:45 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

On October 7th 2023, 18 members of the same family, including at least five children and four women, were reportedly killed in an Israeli military airstrike, leaving at least one survivor, 11 year-old Tala Abu Daqqa, with injuries. Other sources reported that between 25 to 150 civilians were injured.

The attack took place at 11pm in the town of Abasan Al-Kabira, east of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. It was reported that Israeli aircrafts directly targeted the house of the Abu Daqqa family with several missiles, leading to its collapse.

Multiple sources corroborated that at least five children were killed.

Fajir News reported that two days prior to the missile strike on the Abu Daqqa family, Ali Abu Daqqa had been speaking to a journalist about an appeal for him to undergo heart surgery. He spoke alongside his son Khaled who was hopeful for his father’s recovery, Khaled Ali Abu Hamad Abu Daqqa was subsequently killed in the strike, aged 22. Khaled’s brother Qais Ali Abu Hamad Abu Daqqa, was also killed, aged 12, along with his older brother Asif Ali Abu Hamad Abu Daqqa who was 26 years old and their younger sister Maryam Ali Abu Hamad Abu Daqqa, who was 8. The report added that their mother and two of their brothers survived and were pulled from the rubble, however no other sources reported that there were multiple survivors.

Saeed Abu Daqqa posted on Facebook that this was the family of Yasser Abu Daqqa, 28 years old, who is currently being detained in an Israeli prison, with nine years remaining until his release. It was not immediately clear what Yasser Abu Daqqa was detained for. The victims included the mother of the prisoner, his siblings and their wives and their children.

Multiple sources reported the names of the other victims, though did not provide further details on ages or family connections. The named victims were as follows: Hassan Muhammad Abu Daqqa, Hussein Muhammad Abu Daqqa, Lian Hussein Abu Daqqa, Judy Hussein Abu Daqqa, Sham Hussein Abu Daqqa, Muhammad Hussein Abu Daqqa, Aseed Hussein Abu Daqqa, Muhammad Ismail Abu Hamad Abu Daqqa,  Uday Ismail Abu Hamad Abu Daqqa, Dana Ismail Abu Hamad Abu Daqqa, Nadia Abu Hamad Abu Daqqa, Halima Abu Hamad Abu Daqqa, and Shaima Abdel Hadi Qadeeh.

CNN reported that at least 13 members of the same family, including four toddlers, were killed by an Israeli airstrike, which also killed another four people and injured 25 others. Al Ghad TV reported about 150 people had been injured in the Abasan area.

Tala Abu Daqqa, 11, a survivor, was pictured crying in an image shared on social media. It is reported that her father, mother and three sisters were killed in the attack.

PCHR reported that the building consisted of three floors of concrete and the bombing resulted in the complete destruction of the house, further damaging surrounding houses. PCHR added that the victims were within the building, with no prior warning of the attack. Multiple sources support this claim with images of the building turned to rubble.

Mohammad Abu Daqqa, a relative of the Abu Daqqa family, told CNN that five residential buildings, each three or four stories tall, were destroyed in the strike. “They hit us with two or three barrels of explosives and brought the entire buildings down,” Abu Daqqa said. “We call on the Arab and European countries to interfere … and UN to solve this situation, because we are in a dire situation.”

Airwars was unable to find exact matches of these names to the Palestinian Ministry of Health name list released on October 26th.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

Airwars assessment

On October 9th, 2023, the Israeli military allegedly conducted an airstrike on the house belonging to the Al-Astal family on Al-Arnab street in the center of Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip. 19 people were reported injured as a result of the strike and at least four civilians were killed, including two children and a woman.

@ShehabAgency and other local news sources initially posted that three civilians were killed and 19 others were injured, while Abdulrahman (@abd_rahman197) posted on Twitter/X that five people were killed and “others” were injured.
