Airwars assessment

On Wednesday, October 18th 2023, 24 civilians were reported injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike on the home of the Abu Amira family next to a pump on al-Alami street, Jabalia Camp, Gaza strip.

Safa news reported that the home was bombed “on the heads of its residents” and that there were “a number of injured people”, with sources on local and social media including the Ministry of the Interior in Gaza corroborating the same.

Rabab Abu Hatab posted that “there were injuries” from the strike, while the North Gaza District Police stated that 24 injured people were transported away from the site of the strike, “their condition described as moderate to good.” Sources did not specify any further details about the civilians injured.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

Airwars assessment

A father and his four sons were killed in an alleged Israeli airstrike on their home in the al-Geneina neighbourhood in Rafah at dawn on 21 October 2023: father 60-year-old Samir al-Kurd, and his sons 40-year old Tamer Samir al-Kurd, 33-year-old Sami Samir al-Kurd, 32-year-old Hisham Samir Rajab al-Kurd, and a fourth son whose name has not been identified. News platform Alwatan Voice reported that the victims “were found under the rubble” following the strike.

Friends and family took to social media to mourn the victims, including Yahya Muhammad al-Balbis, Ahmed al-Karnaz Abu Karam, Ahmed Jaafar al-Kurd, as well as Abu Khaled al-Ashqar, who remembered his “esteemed friend, brother, and colleague, Tamer al-Kurd,” and spoke of their “years at the same table in school and years of friendship and brotherhood… Oh heartache.” Abdul Rahman Adnan al-Hams shared a photo with Hisham and indicated he was survived by his wife, referring to her as “Lulu,” writing: “The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, and we are saddened by your departure. My brother-in-law, the martyr: Hisham Samir al-Kurd (Abu Malik) (…) We ask God to strengthen your heart, my beloved sister Lulu and to give us patience over the loss of our dearly beloved Abu Malik.”

Photos shared by news platform Palestine Post showed the extent of destruction by the airstrike, with the family home reduced to rubble. No public sources claimed that any of the men were not civilians.

Airwars has matched all of the names with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of nearly 7000 victims’ names and ID numbers released on October 26th.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The incident occured around dawn.

Airwars assessment

An alleged Israeli bombardment killed at least 25 civilians, including members of the Tabasi, al-Hams and Abu Younis families, on the 22nd of October 2023, in the Tal Al-Sultan area in the west of Rafah in Gaza. The number of injured civilians remains unknown and some were still stuck under the rubble at the time of the reporting. The airstrike took place shortly before 12:23PM when Shehab Agency reported it.

Journalist Adel Zourub provided the names of many of those killed: 60-year-old Mahmoud Ahmed Musa Tabasi, along with his daughter Joan Mahmoud Ahmed Tabasi and sons, 33-year-old Ahmed Mahmoud Musa Tabasi, 39-year-old Ghassan Mahmoud Musa Tabasi, and 41-year-old Talat Mahmoud Musa Tabasi. Talat’s 12-year-old son, Musa Talaat Mahmoud Tabasi, was also killed.

Others from the Tabasi family were killed, named as Ahmed Musa Musa Tabasi, and 5-year-old Adam Muhammad Ahmed Tabasi. Mohammed Salman Tabasi identified the child Musa Raed Tabasi among those killed; another child, 3-year-old Ahmed Mahmoud Ahmed Tabasi, was named by Adel Zourub.

Nufal al Akhras added names of the dead who were identified at Emirati Hospital: 9-year-old Amina Fouad Mahmoud Tabasi and her one-year-old sister Sour Fouad Mahmoud Tabasi.

Shaima Ahmed Khamis Abu Younis (41) was killed, along with her children, daughters Sarah Hani Samir Al-Hams (13), Huda Hani Samir al-Hams (11) and Malak Hani Samir al-Hams (18). Shaima’s husband Dr. Hani al-Hams posted a memorial for his wife and children, adding that their son Omar Hani al-Hams was still missing under the rubble at the time. There was no further reporting on whether Omar was killed or injured or survived unscathed, but his name was not found on the Ministry of Health list.

Other members of the Abu Younis family who were killed include Zafer Ahmed Khamis Abu Younis (34), Asmaa Ahmed Khamis Abu Younis (26), and Taher Ahmed Khamis Abu Younis (39). Based on their names, it is likely that they were siblings of Shaima.  A child named Sila Zafer Ahmed Al-Hams, likely a one year old based on the Ministry of Health list (but last name is listed as Abu Younis, which would likely make her the child of Zafer) was also killed.

According to the Kuwait Specialized Hospital, Hamdi Ismail al-Zahar (40) was reportedly killed alongside eight-year-old Saqr Ahmed Ismail al-Zahar while another source mentioned that Hamdi’s son was also killed. A post from Hassan Al-Zahar Abu Said identified Hamdi’s nephew “Ahmed” as among those killed and stated that Saqr was Hamdi’s son (although the names do not indicate this).

Ahmed Abdel Aziz Abu Khatla and 34-year-old Magda Gamal Ibrahim Aram.

At the time of reporting, it appeared there were still others unaccounted for under the rubble.

Fadi al-Arawi posted a condolence message for his “brother and friend” Talaat Tabasi while Journalist Adel Zourub posted a graphic image of a dead child identified as Musa Raed Tabasi. Additional condolence messages were posted by various other family members and friends.

Some of the victims of the attack were brought to the al-Kuwaiti and al-Najjar hospitals as noted in Firas Abu Sharkh’s post. Multiple other outlets noted the bodies were brought to the Emirati Hospital, including those of injured people without specifying a toll. Images of men praying in front of one of the bodies of the victims in a mosque were released as well as doctors praying in front of the Kuwaiti hospital in front of the victims who had arrived at the hospital. Rescue teams reported that others were still stuck under the rubble meaning there may yet be more unidentified casualties. Furthermore, many people were unidentifiable due to the mutilation of their bodies once they arrived at the Emirati hospital.

Where sources specified the belligerent, all sources attributed the airstrike to the Israeli military.

Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

Airwars assessment

A husband and wife were killed and four others injured after an alleged Israeli bombardment on Block 12 of the al-Bureij camp on October 22nd, 2023.

65-year old Arif Ahmed Al-Nabahin was killed with his wife, 59-year old Mona Abdel Rahman Al-Nabahin.

The strike was initially reported by Safa News at 10:36am, and has been described as both an aircraft bombing and an artillery strike. Other sources such as Al-Sharq News and Urgent Now corroborated the strike, reporting a “number of casualties and injuries.”  A Facebook post by Muhammad Jaber further alleged four people were injured; this has not been confirmed elsewhere. The same post also noted that it was difficult for ambulances to gain access to the site of the strike, and appears to have had to withdraw after thirty minutes of trying to reach the site.

Friends and relatives posted on social media to pay tribute to the victims. A post by Facebook user “Made in Gaza” remembered the couple, describing Mona as “virtuous” and asking for God to “have mercy on them.” A photo attached shows a smiling Arif.

A tribute by Arif’s childhood friend, Abu Basil Azara, included a photo of a young Arif standing with two friends.

Facebook user “Abu Ajwa’s assistant” wrote that the pain of such losses was a “sadness that does not stop.”

Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli forces.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The incident occured at approximately 10:36 am local time.

Airwars assessment

On the 22nd of October 2023, an alleged Israeli projectile hit the house of the al-Saidi family in the Saudi district, west of Rafah, reportedly killing one civilian man and causing injuries to others.

Moataz Abu Talekh was reported as the young man killed in several posts. Multiple Facebook posts include photos alongside tributes to him, including Abu Khaled Al-Turbani who posted a condolence message for his “brother and beloved” Moataz. He was taken to al-Kuwaiti hospital but did not survive, according to Voice of the Nation Radio.

Multiple posts also report injuries, but do not name or number individuals injured. No further details were available regarding the current condition of these civilians.

Airwars was not able to match Moataz Abu Talekh’s name with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of nearly 7000 victims’ names and ID numbers released on October 26th.

All sources that identify a belligerent report that the belligerent was the Israeli military. One of these sources, Ma’an News Agency, alleges that the incident was an airstrike.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

The victims were named as:

Moataz Abu Talekh معتز ابو تيلخ

Airwars assessment

Up to 10 civilians were wounded and taken to hospitals in Homs, Syria after being hit by shrapnel from an explosion, allegedly as a result either of Israeli airstrikes or an accidental explosion, on an ammunition warehouse of Hezbollah within the camp of Hassan Bin Al Haitham on the road connecting Homs to Palmyra, Homs governorate, on May 1st, 2020.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said they received information that the explosion “was caused by a new Israeli missile strike, which targeted a warehouse of ammunition and missiles belonging to the Lebanese Hezbollah in the camp of Hassan bin Al-Haytham located on the road of Homs – Palmyra.” The sources of the Syrian Observatory confirmed that the camp “is for university training, but the Lebanese Hezbollah took it as headquarters a few years ago.”

However, there were different stories about the explosions that were heard in Homs. The Syrian regime said the explosion was a result of human error while moving ammunition there, which had then led to the explosion and the injury of a number of civilians who were passing at that time.

Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) quoted a regime military source as saying “At 9:25 am on Friday, May 1st, 2020, successive explosions were heard at a military position in the city of Homs, and investigations revealed that these explosions occurred due to human error during the transportation of some ammunition”, the source said. He added that the explosions caused material and human losses due the shrapnel which scattered outside the military position.

However, the governor of Homs, Talal Barazi, said that  “the sounds heard in Homs were caused by explosions in an ammunition depot as a result of an attack on the site. He stressed that the attack included a military site and its nature was not known yet, which led to explosions. Smoke columns emerged from the site, shells fell in its vicinity, and a number of passing civilians were wounded.”

Dr. Hassan Al Jundi, Homs Health Director, told SANA that “10 injuries had arrived in public and private hospitals in the city as a result of falling flying missiles from the explosion that occurred at a military site, and the necessary aid was provided to them.”

Step News Agency provided the names of that arrived at Homs Hospital with injuries from the explosion: Muhammad Ahmad Al-Ahmad – amputated right leg, Muhammad Ali Ibrahim – two limbs amputated, Muhammad Yusef Milhem – a right hand wound and a back wound, Muhammad Omar Hussein Askari – stable general situation.

Baladi News reported that a number of Hezbollah members were killed and injured as a result of the event. They said that nine militants including officers were killed.

The incident occured at approximately 9:25 am local time.

The victims were named as:

Age unknown male Amputated right leg injured
Age unknown Two amputated limbs injured

Airwars assessment

Two civilians were killed and another was injured in alleged Israeli drone strike on farmland west of Deir al-Balah on May 11th 2021.

WAFA News reported that “the occupation planes targeted a group of citizens west of Deir al-Balah, which led to the death of a citizen and the serious injury of another.” However, Al Haya and various other sources said that two civilians were killed in the bombing.

According to Al Mezan, “on Tuesday evening, 11 May 2021, an Israeli drone fired a missile at farmland in the district of Middle Gaza. The attack killed two Palestinian brothers, 21-year-old Munther Abdel Kareem Baraka and 18-year-old Manar, running a family-owned poultry business.” Various other sources give Manar’s age as between 18 and 19 years old and Anadolu Agency listed Manar as being a woman.

A report by the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, an Israeli-based research group, provided information that “the two brothers worked on their father’s poultry farm near the Deir al-Balah beach, situated near “resistance” positions in southwestern Deir al-Balah. It was so close to the outposts that shrapnel fell near the farm every time the positions were attacked. According to the family, they were killed by a missile fired from a UAV when the Israeli Air Force attacked the terrorist positions near the farm”.

@AbdulrahmanQan added that at the time the brothers were killed, they were working on the farm and Palestinian Center for Human Rights reported that “they were in a 14-dunum rented agricultural land that included 3 poultry farms, which belong to their father “Abdel Karim Mohammed Barakah”. Palestinian Center for Human Rights also reported that “at approximately 22:00, their bodies were taken to al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.”

B’Tselem interviewed Abd al-Karim Barakah, 65, a father of seven including Munzer [Munther] and Manar, who said “On Tuesday evening, 11 May 2021, I was with my sons Munzer and Manar on our land. We went there despite the war because the chicks needed care. The atmosphere was tense that night. There were airstrikes all the time and drones hovering over us. We sat down under an olive tree, a few meters away from the coops. Munzer said he and Manar would go turn on the gas heaters in the coops to keep the chicks warm, and then come home. Manar was terrified of the airstrikes and held his brother’s hand. They headed to the coop and I stayed under the tree. Everything was dark because there was no power in the area at the time. When they were both 20 meters away from me, the bombings suddenly intensified and they shouted to me that they were leaving. I called out to them, “Leave everything and go home.” Meanwhile, some bales of straw caught fire and I got up quickly to put it out. As I was putting it out, I heard a loud explosion. About 45 minutes later, I was done putting out the fire and called out to my sons, but they didn’t answer. I went in the direction they’d gone and then found them lying side by side about 30 meters away. I sat down next to them and put Munzer’s head on my leg. I called, “Munzer, Munzer,” but he didn’t respond. So I left him and started talking to Manar. I called his name, but he didn’t respond either. I shouted as loud as I could for my neighbors to come, and some members of the Khsewan family, who live nearby, arrived. They picked my children up and took them to the house of a family member who lives 100 meters from the coop. Fifteen minutes later, a Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance arrived and took my sons to Shuhada al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah. When we got to the hospital, the doctors examined them and pronounced them dead. We buried them the next day at noon. Munzer and Manar left school in the sixth grade and have worked in the coops with me ever since. They raised the chicks to adulthood and then sold them. They took care of the whole financial side of the business….Since our boys were killed, things at home have been very tough. My wife is suffering immensely. I take her to the doctor almost every day. She has anxiety attacks and screams and cries a lot, especially when people come to console her.”

A tweet from @Mmt90_ reported that the bodies of Munther and Manar were taken to Al-Aqsa Hospital after the strike. Images posted by EastArea on Facebook show the funeral for the brothers, with many people gathered to mourn their death.

All of the sources that reported on the incident attributed the strikes to Israel.

The incident occured in the evening.

Airwars assessment

At least one man, identified as a member of the Mujahid Qassami, was killed and three others were injured in an alleged Israeli drone strike on Deir Al-Balah.

According to Al Mezan, Mohammed Khaled Al-Tawashi, 21, a resident of Deir Al-Balah, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Al Aqsa Hospital at 8:30am. He was killed in an Israeli drone strike the previous evening near his home.

Palestinian Centre for Human Rights added that the drone strike had occurred at approximately 7:00pm the night before on agricultural land behind a home.

Both Al Mezan and Palestinian Centre for Human Rights reported that Al-Tawashi’s body wasn’t found until the morning after he was killed. However, multiple sources, including @uunionnews and @GazaNewsOfficia reported that “a martyr and 3 injuries arrived at Al-Aqsa Hospital after targeting in Deir al-Balah” on May 13th. It is unclear if this is the same incident.

Al Qassam Brigades posted a memorial on their website for Mohamed Khaled Al-Tawashi, who they identified as a “Mujahid Qassami”. @SafaPs also tweeted that a resistance site was bombed in Deir al-Balah. None of the sources referred to Al-Tawashi as a civilian.

All of the sources attribute the strikes to Israel. The Israeli Defense Forces released a statement that “17:25 – IDF aircraft attack the operational apartment of the deputy commander of Hamas’ Jabalya battalion in the northern Gaza Strip, from which the latest attacks were conducted. In addition, the IDF attacked three other operational apartments, of a company commander in the Sajaiya battalion in the northern Gaza Strip, a company commander in Shabura in the northern Gaza Strip and a company commander in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip.”

The incident occured at approximately 7:00 pm local time.
