Airwars assessment

A possible US or Kenyan airstrike was conducted in the Bur Madow area, Bay region according to Mareeg Media.

The article, published a day after the alleged strike, did not state if anybody had been killed.

According to Mareeg: “Unknown fighter jets carried out an airstrike targeting Al-Shabaab foreign fighters in south west of Somalia. The strike was carried out near Bur Madow area in Bay region. It’s unclear who carried out Thursday’s strike. Somali government has not commented on the new air strike yet.”

No additional sources have presently been identified for this allegation.

Asked whether it had been responsible for this event, in February 2020 a senior AFRICOM official told Airwars that this was not the case. However, this may not preclude actions by the CIA which conducts its own undeclared strikes in Somalia.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

At least one man was injured in alleged Israeli strikes on Ain al-Tinah on May 10, 2021. Local sources are conflicted as to whether he is a civilian or militant and one source reported that he later died of his wounds.

According to Step News, “the Israeli army targeted a person near the border fence with the occupied Golan on the outskirts of the town of Ain al-Tina. The person is from the town of Hadar, and he was wounded as a result of being directly targeted by Israeli forces.” However, @WithinSyriaBlog referred to the man wounded as being Druze and added that he is a “native of the Israeli-occupied town of Majdal Shams”.

Shaam News reported that Israeli forces “targeted a house” and the strike resulted in one person being injured. A tweet from @ElmasDean identified him as being “seriously injured” and another source described his condition as “his life is in danger”.

@SAMSyria0 named the injured civilian as Al Sheikh Tahrir Mahmoud. @MosheBerkovitch tweeted on May 19th, nine days later, that he died of his wounds.

Euphrates Post identified the “position of the Assad regime and Iranian militias” as being the target of the airstrikes and that “the Israeli bombing resulted in the injury of a civilian, who was transferred to Quneitra Hospital.”

Other sources also identified the injured man as a civilian. However, a tweet from @WithinSyriaBlog referred to Mr. Mahamoud as being ” a fighter in al-Qunitra’s NDF”, adding that “his brothers, Nazir and Tha’air, were both killed in the war and his late father, Walid Mahmoud, was imprisoned by Israel.”

Times of Israel referred to the location of the strikes as an alleged Hezbollah site and added that Mr. Mahamoud worked for Hezbollah. Carmel and North Portal added that foreign forces, including Hezbollah, hire local recruits to work for them in the area and Nziv.net identified the injured man as someone who “cooperates with Hezbollah mainly on drug distribution and observations of the Israeli border.”

All of the sources that reported on the strike identified Israel as being responsible. The Israel Defense Forces refused to comment on the matter.

The incident occured at approximately 3:00 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

At least one civilian, a child, was killed and at least two other civilians, a woman and one to two children, were injured in alleged Russian or regime airstrikes on Mantef village on June 22, 2021.

According to Syrian Network for Human Rights, “a 17-year-old girl, named as Wafaa Abdul Hamid Qassoum, was killed while two other civilians were injured when Syrian regime artillery forces used shells to target Mentef village”.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that “a female civilian was killed and her child was wounded in a rocket fire” while various other sources gave different numbers for wounded. Syrian Civil Defense identified “the killing of a woman, and the injury of a woman and a two-month-old child” while @ZaitunAgency gave the account that “a woman was killed and two children were injured”. @anasanas84 tweeted that “a two-month-old girl was injured and another 19-year-old was injured”.

The woman referred to in these and other sources as being killed seems to be the same as the girl listed above, Wafaa Abdul Hamid Qassoum, but since she is under the age of 18, she is classified as a child by Airwars. Images provided by @Omar_Madaniah and @Gurbtwatan show the same baby from this pictures with injuries from the strikes.

A tweet from @abuhuzaifa_ includes a picture that is identified as the two children of someone killed in the strikes on Mantef – the post does not identify their mother by name but may be referring to Wafaa Abdul Hamid Qassoum.

@Gurbtwatan reported that a woman was preparing lunch for her husband when she heard the sound of shelling and then raced to grab her three month-old baby who was napping and run outside of the house. Zaman Al Wasl confirmed that this woman was Wafaa Abdul Hamid Qassoum, who was “trying to escape from her home with her daughter to a nearby underground shelter. “Wafaa” was hit by shrapnel, and her fall to the ground did not prevent her from holding onto her 3-month-old daughter, Jana. He added that shrapnel in the thigh affected the girl, who was taken to hospitals in Idlib governorate for treatment, while her mother was buried in the town’s cemetery.”

@abdalazezketaz pointed out that civilian homes were destroyed in the bombing.

Sources were conflicted as to who was responsible, with Syrian network for Human Rights attributed the shelling to the regime while @EdlibNN blamed Russia. Syrian Civil Defense did not distinguish between whether the regime or Russia was responsible.

The incident occured in the afternoon.

The victims were named as:

Airwars assessment

Three members of Islamic Jihad were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a tower block in central Gaza. Numerous sources also reported up to eight injuries, with two reporting children among the injured.

The airstrike targeted the Al-Jundi Al-Majhool building, often referred to as the “Unknown Soldier” building in Gaza’s upmarket Rimal neighbourhood. There was limited information on the identities of those injured or the extent of the injuries in the reporting around the incident. Wafa News reported that most of the eight injured were children, while Al Watan alleged one child had been wounded. Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights recorded seven injuries, all of which they said were moderate to light.

There was significantly more information on the three men who were killed in the airstrike. They were identifed as Sameh Fahim Al-Mamlouk, Kamal Tayseer Qureiqa and Muhammad Yahya Abu Al-Ata.

Some sources identified the men as civilians but information however emerged indicating they were militants. Their deaths were announced of the website of Islamic Jihad. A statement posted on the site read: “On the May 11th, 2021, and on the second day of the Battle of Saif al-Quds, [the name given by militants in Gaza for the May war] the commander Sameh al-Mamluk was on a date with the martyrdom, accompanied by his Mujahideen brothers Kamal Taysir Qureiqa and Muhammad Yahya Abu al-Atta, following a cowardly assassination carried out by the Zionist planes…”

According to the Times of Israel, a spokesperson for the Al-Quds Brigade, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s armed wing, vowed revenge for the deaths. “Our martyrs, commanders Sameh Fahim Al-Mamlouk, Kamal Tayseer Qureiqa and Muhammad Yahya Abu Al-Ata, bled, and we affirm that the response to their assassination will be harsh.”

Images also appeared on social media showing the three men in military fatigues wearing hats which appeared to have the Islamic Jihad emblem on the front.

The Israeli Defence Forces confirmed the airstrike in a tweet which included a video of the incident. The caption read, “This is the moment that the IDF & Israel Security Agency carried out a targeted strike against Islamic Jihad commander, Samah Abed al-Mamluk & other senior members of his unit. They were among those responsible for hundreds of rockets fired at Israelis.”

“An attack was carried out on a hiding place in which senior members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s rocket apparatus were staying,” the Israeli military and the Shin Bet said, according to the Times of Israel.

The main target of the strike appeared to be Sameh Fahim Al-Mamlouk, identified by the Times of Israel as a senior commander of the armed wing. According to the Islamic Jihad website, he joined the Al Quds Brigade in 2004. The other two fighters were reportedly field commanders who oversaw rocket strikes on Israel.

According to World Israel News, Muhammad Yahya Abu Al-Ata was the deputy commander of the Gaza Brigade and one of the heads of the special rocket unit.

There was some confusion in the reporting as Jerusalem Post reported a Hassan Abu al-Ata as being killed in a different strike. He was referred to as deputy commander of the Gaza Brigade as well, with both sources noting the deceased was a brother of Baha Abu al-Atta, a senior Islamic Jihad commander who was killed alongside his wife in an Israeli airstrike in 2019.

An IDF press statement on the 11th May announced that the IDF had struck a multi-story building used by Hamas, stating: “Inside the building were multiple military units used by Hamas, including headquarters used for military research and development, military intelligence offices and more. Prior to the strike, the IDF provided advance warning to civilians in the building and provided sufficient time for them to evacuate the site.”

All three men killed in the airstrike were married, according to the Islamic Jihad website.

The incident occured at 11:25:00 local time.

Press release:
The IDF struck a multi-story building used by the Hamas terror organization. The building housed the Hamas organization's military intelligence offices and other units

A short while ago, IDF fighter jets struck a multi-story building in the Rimal neighborhood, in the city of Gaza, used by the Hamas terror organization.
Inside the building were multiple military units used by Hamas, including headquarters used for military research and development, military intelligence offices and more. Prior to the strike, the IDF provided advance warning to civilians in the building and provided sufficient time for them to evacuate the site.

The Hamas terror organization is responsible for the events occurring in, and from, the Gaza Strip, and will bear the consequences of its actions against Israel and her citizens.

The IDF is prepared for a wide variety of scenarios while continuing to fulfill its mission to defend the citizens of Israel.

Airwars assessment

Up to 52 civilians were reported killed and 100 others, many of whom are in critical situation, were injured in alleged Russian forces airstrikes on Zardana village in Idlib, Syria, on June 7th, 2018, according to local sources. Among those killed are up to 11 women and 11 children and a health worker. Most victims belong to seven different families.

Local sources also said some of those seriously wounded were taken to Bab Al Hawa border hospital, and hospitals in Turkey for treatment. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), one of the civilians wounded in Zardana died 14 days after he got injured.

Orient TV reported that Russian warplanes attacked and destroyed an entire neighborhood in the town, including a clinic, a mosque (Sa’ed bin Mouath) and several buildings, noting that the targeted area civilian without any military presence. The TV channel also reported from White Helmets that one of their volunteers, Ali Hassan Baradei, was killed in the attack, and four other volunteers were seriously injured.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that “Ali Hasan Barad’i, a civil defense member from Kelli town in Idlib, was killed as warplanes believed to be Russian fired missiles near Sa’ed bin Mouath Mosque in Zardana village in Idlib, while he was pulling out victims of a massacre committed by the same warplanes in the village, on June 7th, 2018.”

Local sources said that Russian warplanes targeted a residential area with eight raids and that it used a ‘double-tap’ airstrike what caused a huge number of deaths among civilians. The first raid killed about 28 civilians and when White Helmets arrived, another raid targeted the area, resulting in more victims, and that cluster rockets were used in the attack, according to Step News. Witnesses said that the raids caused a 10 meter crater in the ground, according to SMART Agency.

Syrian Civil Defense said that six of its health centers took part in rescuing civilians and they are  their branches in Ma’arat Misrin, Kelli, Sarmin, Idlib, Binnish and western Idlib branch.

According to the reports, the attack comes after a de-escalation agreement was in place. Shaam Network said “observatories confirmed that the aircraft that targeted the town of Zardana took off with evening hours from Hmeimim base, and that it was a well-known Russian aircraft in the area that had flown for dozens of times and bombed Idlib countryside.” Shaam continues: “Idlib activists also followed the movement of warplanes on the area and monitored the bombing of Russian warplanes of Zardana twice, the first one caused the first massacre, then it was followed by the bombing of the Russian warplanes for the second time during the presence of rescue and civil defense teams, which caused an increase in the number of wounded and martyrs.”

Also according to SMART Agency “Observers deployed in the area, which are responsible for monitoring the movement of warplanes, said that Russian warplanes took off from the base of Hameimim and flew over the cities and towns of Zammar, Atarb, Ibin, Tal Toukan, Ttnaz and Jabal Zawiya, and then headed northeast, towards the area coinciding with the time of the massacre.”

However, Russia denied responsibility for the attack, claiming that it was a result of fighting between military factions in Idlib. Arabic Sputnik (arm of the Russian government) quoted the Russian Ministry of Defense saying that “severe fighting took place in this area between large units of the Jabhat al-Nusra Front and the Army of Islam, using heavy artillery.”

According to BBC, the UN Secretary General called for an investigation into the deadly airstrikes on Zardana. “In a statement released on Sunday night, Mr Guterres called for a full investigation into the attacks, especially allegations that there was also a second strike targeting first respondents, to establish accountability.”

Families and friends of the victims mourned them on social media. Abd Al Hei wrote to Ibrahim Muhammad Yassouf: “With full sadness and sorrow, and with full submission to God’s will, I inform you about the martyrdom of my dear brother, Ibrahim Muhammad Yassouf, as a result of the hateful raids that targeted the village of Zardana.”

Abd Al Aziz Ammon also posted an image of the victim Khaled Soufan saying “I am asking you, is this a terrorist, or a the terrorist is who killed him? May God have mercy on you and make your place in paradise, Khaled.”

Mhamad Kadour mourned his loss of his friend saying “May God have mercy on you, my brother Abd Alqader Amoun.”
