Airwars assessment

Up to four civilians were killed in alleged Coalition or Turkish airstrikes, according to sources.

The Syrian Network noted that “four civilians (2 children and their parents) died when International Coalition warplanes missiles fired on Baza’a city in Aleppo governorate eastern suburbs.”

However according to Ara News, “A statement issued by the Presidency of the Turkish General Staff said on Friday ‘Fighter jets belonging to the Turkish Air Force were able during the raids carried out on Thursday to neutralize 22 terrorists and destroy 272 objectives in al Bab city and the town of Baza’a in northern Syria, including 21 shelters for ISIL, a centralized command and an ammunition store’.”

The Syrian Observatory also blamed Ankara: “A child and a woman were martyred in Turkish raids on Baza’a and in Turkish artillery on al Bab.”

Airwars assessment

Four civilians were reported killed – three of them possibly children – in alleged Coalition strikes on the village of Shanina.

According to the Syrian Press Centre “Activists said aircraft believed to be from the international coalition targeted civilian houses in the village of Shanina with several air raids, which resulted in the deaths of four civilians, more than seven others were injured in an initial toll, and among the martyrs are three children.”

Halab Today also reported deaths though said the three children were injured not killed: “Four martyrs including an old man and his wife in addition to 7 wounded including three children.” It published an apparent image of the strike location.

Smart News said one Islamic State fighter also died in the attack.

A US airstrike reportedly killed three alleged AQAP militants, “including a leader”, in the Al Haraj area of Jardan district, in Shabwa governorate, according to various sources. There were no known associated reports of civilian harm.

Critical Threats, for example, asserted that “A reported U.S. airstrike killed three al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) militants in al Haraj area, central Shabwah governorate on January 26.”

According to Saad Al-Wadi, the strike targeted a car in the desert area, fifty kilometres from the city of Ataq.

Baghdadia and Muez Al Ubiedi (Facebook) said that in the Wells and Dawasa neighborhoods two people were killed and fifteen wounded, mostly children. They blamed the US for the bombing. The Coalition has conceded the casualties.

Al Rawed posted an Al A’Amaq [ISIL propaganda] video showing “the damage left behind by US aircraft [as it] bombed residential areas on the left side of the city of Mosul”. The witness in the video said that two civilian houses and a wool factory had just been targeted by a US missile.

The Coalition announced on March 4th that it was conducting an assessment into an event on Mosul for January 26th. In July it reported: “Jan 26, 2017, near Mosul, Iraq, via social media report: During a strike on an ISIS VBIED factory, it was assessed that two civilians were unintentionally killed and 15 were injured in an adjacent structure.”

Coalition officials provided Airwars with the precise coordinates 38SLF 3332322476 – which are for Dawasa.

Claims that a ‘civilian car’ was targed by the Coalition near al Ghakka were later revised, after reports identified a named ISIL commander killed in the attack.

Initially, al Hassakah Youth Union reported that “Coalition planes target a civilian car in al Ghakka village east of al Shadadi which led to the death of Ahmad al Muobarak and the injury of three others.”

However al Sharqiya identified al Muobarak as an ISIL leader.
