The Coalition denied that it had killed or injured civilians near Deir ez Zawr on October 1st, despite local claims.

According to reports, multiple bridges were targeted in Coalition strikes on October 1st, with Step News reporting that “Coalition warplanes destroyed a number of bridges including Al-Abbas bridge in Abu Kamal, and Al-Nawam.” Other reports said the Al-Ashara bridge in Deir Ezzor and the Al Tarif village bridge were also targeted. 7al also claimed that “Coalition warplanes open heavy fire on civilians houses which wounded many civilians.” And according to SRV, “One woman died and three people were wounded, one seriously called Khaleel Shabak, after Coalition warplanes struck Subha village in Deir Ezzor.” However the Coaliiton at the time only reported hitting oil installations.

A Coalition report issued in December 2016 stated: “(9.) Oct. 1, 2016, near Dayr az Zawr, Syria: No Coalition strikes were conducted on that day in the geographical area.” However it was unclear which locale the Coalition had assessed, since it had already confirmed it conducted strikes in the province that day.

Airwars assessment

Airstrikes, possibly carried out by Turkish forces, killed one civilian according to one local report. Others referred only to violent clashes between non state actors.

Smart News Agency reported that “international Coalition aircraft” targeting ISIS in Al Tweihina which it said killed one civilian and two members of the terror group. However, the report identified the village as being located in Raqqa governorate.

The Syrian Observatory reported instead that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) attacked “Turkish soldiers” in the vicinity of Al Tweihina. The Observatory added that “different sources confirmed to SOHR that a number of Turkish soldiers were killed” though it may have been referencing rebels supported by Turkey. It did however allude to “aerial reconnaissance aircraft” in the area, possibly belonging to Turkey.

Tal Abiyad posted pictures and video of an armoured vehicle that it said was captured from the “al Sham Front.” (update from December 2018, this video is no longer available to view online.)

Daily Sabah meanwhile cited the Turkish military and reported that “FSA fighters with the support of the Turkish military continued to attack” Kurdish forces in the area. The report cited a number of airstrikes.

In their June 2020 civilian casualty report, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that no Coalition actions were conducted in the geographical area at that time.

Members of several families were killed by bombings in Mosul, according to one local report.

Mosul Eye reported that members of three families were killed due to “bombardment” in Al-Kindi and Al-Kafa’at Al Thinita neighbourhoods of Mosul. The houses ISIL used are now empty, Mosul Eye clarified. The residents are the victims. Mosul Eye, however, did not directly blame the Coalition, nor did it provide exact casualty figures.

A local tweet said 21 civilians died in the incident, though did not specify who was responsible for the bombing.’Mosul The third Eye said that 30 civilians from four families were casualties – though again did not specify which munitions belligerent were responsible.

One civilian reportedly died in a Coalition airstrike at Mazra’at al Qadissiya, according to local sources.

Smart News noted “Casualties due to coalition airstrikes in Mazra’at Al Qadissiya and Abu Wahel in Raqqa.”

Syria News Desk reported the following: “The media opposition activist Mohamed Osman, quoting civilian sources from Abu Wahil, said Coalition aircraft targeted with severe rocket explosion the homes of civilians in both villages, which led to the deaths of three civilians in Abu Wahil and one in Mazra’at al Qadisiyah, as well as confirming the presence of six wounded in a critical condition who were transferred to the National Hospital in Raqqa under the control of ISIL. The source said the raids also resulted in the deaths of a number of livestock in Abu Wahil and the destruction of five houses completely and partially destroyed in six other houses, in addition to physical damage to other property.”

Press and local sources said that 16 displaced civilians were killed or injured, mostly children and women, after Coalition warplanes targeted their houses in 17 July neighbourhood, at the right side of Mosul. The Correspondences team spoke of 9 killed and several wounded in the alleged Coalition strikes. Other sources also reported coalition strikes in the neighbourhood. Almousel Now posted a video showing intensive bombing “by the international coalition of Daesh sites in Mosul”.

On March 4th the Coalition confirmed that it had killed civilians that day in Mosul in two incidents. An official later confirmed to Airwars that the following event referred to Tammuz/ July 17th neighbourhood: “Jan. 4, 2017, near Mosul, Iraq, via media report: During a strike on ISIS fighters in a house it was assessed that one civilian was unintentionally injured in the house.” However this report was subsequently withdrawn: “Jan. 4, 2017, near Mosul, Iraq: Number 4 on the March 4, 2017, CJTF-OIR press release reported that one civilian was unintentionally injured in a house. That was incorrect, it was assessed that the report of civilian casualties was non-credible.”

Local sources reported that unspecified air raids targeted Hadbah neighborhood, northeast of Mosul.

Iraqi Spring Media Center said that “three raids targeted the densely populated neighborhood of Hadbah on the left side of Mosul.” It did not say how many people died.

Mosul Ateka said that Sinan Abdel-Islam was killed in the raids, with a family member also confirming his death.

In what may be a related or separate incident, the Coalition noted on March 4th that it had conducted an assessment into a self-reported event in Mosul on this date: “Jan. 10, 2017, near Mosul, Iraq, via self-report: After a review of available information and strike video it was assessed that no civilians were harmed in this strike.”
