Notes

For Nov 9th – 15th, Denmark report 10 missions over the Iraqi province of Nineweh and the Syrian provinces Ar Raqqah, Dayr Az Zawr and Al Hasakah. Attacks were carried out on Daesh buildings and mortar positions. They report dropping 5 precision bombs.

Mission Update nr. 22

Resolute support Mission – Afghanistan

Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 – Middelhavet

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14, 2015 — The U.S. military conducted an airstrike in Libya yesterday against an Iraqi national who was a longtime al-Qaida operative and the senior Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant leader in Libya, Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said today.

In a statement, Cook said the strike targeted Abu Nabil, also known as Wissam Najm Abd Zayd al Zubaydi. Reporting suggests Nabil may have been the spokesman in ISIL’s February Coptic Christian execution video, the press secretary added.

“Nabil’s death will degrade ISIL’s ability to meet the group’s objectives in Libya,” he said, “including recruiting new ISIL members, establishing bases in Libya, and planning external attacks on the United States.”

While this was not the first U.S. strike against terrorists in Libya, this is the first U.S. strike against an ISIL leader in Libya, and it demonstrates that the United States will go after ISIL leaders wherever they operate, Cook said.

The press secretary added that this operation was authorized and initiated before the terrorist attack in Paris took place.

Additional statement:

December 7th 2015: The Department of Defense has confirmed that Abu Nabil, aka Wissam Najm Abd Zayd al Zubaydi, an Iraqi national who was a longtime al Qaeda operative and the senior ISIL leader in Libya, is dead as a result of a U.S. military airstrike in Libya undertaken on Nov. 13.

Notes

In the past week, France reports 86 sorties – 5 dedicated reconnaissance sorties, 4 airborne command and control exits, 5 refueling sorties and 72 bombing sorties. They conducted 20 strikes, destroying 25 targets. Of these, 17 were in Iraq and 2 in Syria. On Nov 5th, there was a planned strike north of the town of Al Qa’im, Iraq which destroyed a Daesh ammunition storage site.

Monday 7 November – Typhoons destroyed rocket and mortar equipment near Bayji, while Reaper engaged four terrorist targets near Mosul and one near Raqqah…Although support to the Iraqi efforts to liberate Mosul is the highest priority for the Royal Air Force aircraft operating against Daesh, patrols over Syria and other areas of Iraq are also being maintained, and on Monday 7 November, a Typhoon mission armed with Paveway IV guided bombs destroyed a stockpile of rocket and mortar equipment to the north of Bayji, and a Reaper conducting armed reconnaissance near Raqqah struck a Daesh vehicle with a Hellfire missile. Near Mosul, a Reaper provided close air support to Iraqi forces. Daesh fighters were observed firing a recoilless anti-tank gun at the Iraqi troops, then loading the weapon into a vehicle. As the vehicle pulled away, it was destroyed by a Hellfire. The Reaper’s crew then used a further three Hellfires, which have a very low risk of collateral damage, in successful attacks on groups of extremists as they engaged in street fighting with the Iraqi troops.

Lt. Gen. Townsend statement on SDF advance to isolate Raqqah

SOUTHWEST ASIA – The Syrian Democratic Forces announced that they began their advance to isolate Raqqah, Syria, Nov. 6, 2016. The Coalition is supporting the SDF by providing air and advise and assist support. The Arab element of the SDF is indigenous to the area and will help establish regional support for SDF operations. The isolation of Raqqah, when complete, will liberate strategically valuable terrain surrounding Raqqah and enable the liberation of the city. Ultimately, the liberation of Raqqah will free Syrians to return to a life free from Islamic State of Iraq and Levant atrocities and deny ISIL a safe haven to plot external attacks against the West.

The Combined Joint Task Force – Inherent Resolve Commander, Lt. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, provided the following statement on the SDF advance:

“‎The Syrian Democratic Forces have begun their operation to isolate the city of Raqqah and other ISIL-held territory in Syria. In addition to setting conditions for the ultimate liberation of Raqqah, ISIL’s self-proclaimed capital, the operation will also cut off militants from ISIL in Mosul, Iraq. Throughout each phase of the campaign to liberate Raqqah, the Coalition will continually consult with allies and partners as we plan for the city’s ultimate seizure and governance once ISIL is defeated. We are confident that this next phase will continue the momentum that the Coalition and our partners have achieved, and that together we will deliver ISIL a lasting defeat.”
