Airwars assessment

A moving vehicle was struck by missiles that were fired near Lawdar town in the province of Abyan on the 14th of May 2012. Six “militants” perished in the strike which was allegedly carried out by a Yemeni or US aircraft. There are no reports of civilian harm at this moment.

Officials reported anonymously to the Associated Press that the death toll of the militants was six and this information was corroborated by members of the Popular Resistance Committees to AFP.

While some sources blamed Yemen, the Yemen Air Force reportedly lacks any ability to launch precision strikes on moving vehicles. This casts doubt on whether strikes were carried out by the US or Yemeni forces.

A militant leader named al-Muhajir was declared dead in an incident later on but it is unclear whether this occurred in USYEM079-B or in this incident.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

An alleged US or Yemeni airstrike, naval bombardment, or drone strike killed 10 militants in an Al Qaeda hideout 70 kilometers away from Zinjibar in Shaqra, a southern town in the province of Abyan. There are currently no reports of civilian harm.

The Associated Press reported Yemeni warplanes bombed an Al Qaeda hideout 70km from Zinjibar, killing at least 10 militants, and that this is one of multiple strikes that occurred on the same day, allegedly killing a total of 16 militants stated in this incident and USYEM080-B. The Defense Ministry corroborated this total death toll on their website 26Sep.net. AFP reports that two of the alleged militants killed were from Saudi Arabia and one was Egyptian.

Due to the telephone lines being cut, AFP could not verify the death toll.

American drones have been involved in the campaign against Al Qaeda making it unclear whether the strike was carried out by Yemen or the US. Agence France-Press noted that the strikes against militants were undertaken with “U.S. logistical support”. Aden al-Ghad reported that US drones and missiles were launched in the area of Abyan from warships against prominent Al Qaeda leaders, specifying that a “one of the rockets landed at a checkpoint of the armed groups located at the top of Jabal Al-Arqoub, but there was no information about casualties”, although it is unclear if that references any of the incidents Airwars tracked on this day. It is therefore unclear whether the attack was an airstrike, naval bombardment or a drone strike.

A militant leader named al-Muhajir was named as one of the militants killed later on but it is unclear whether he perished in this incident or in USYEM080-B.

The incident occured in the afternoon.

Airwars assessment

Between 10 and 15 militants linked to Al Qaeda were killed in an alleged Yemeni airstrike or US drone strike just north of the town of Jaar on the 2nd of May, 2012.

Whilst Xinhua stated a local resident had claimed that 10 militants in total had been killed in the airstrike, CNN reported that ‘local security officials’ had stated that 13 suspected militants died in the attack. The Associated Press (AP), in addition to other local sources, claimed the number to be fifteen. Similarly, Itijah made reference to a report by the BBC in which “army officials” were quoted as saying that 15 militants had been killed.

Al-Masdar Online and Itijah both reported that the airstrike was conducted against locations where Al Qaeda militants had been preparing trenches. Al-Masdar Online further stated that these positions were specifically located in the Masnaa area, whilst also citing the BBC report which said that the airstrike had been conducted against a militant “training camp”.

Although the deployment of drones in this airstrike cannot be confirmed, a report by the Associated Press (AP), stated that the airstrike “resembled earlier US drone attacks, but the US did not comment.” Yemen Voice News also reported that “security officials” had said that “a US drone bombed a training site belonging to Al Qaeda in southern Yemen, killing 13 people believed to be militants.” Despite the indications of the involvement of US drones, Xinhua quoted a local resident in Jaar who claimed that the Yemen Air Force (YAF) had carried out the attack.

On the 2nd of May, the day of the airstrike, Xinhua further stated that fierce fighting had erupted in the area after Al Qaeda militants attacked a checkpoint manned by “pro-government tribesmen” referred to by Al-Masdar Online and Itijah as the ‘Popular Committees’. Al-Masdar Online also stated that this checkpoint was specifically located within the area of Shoht, to the north of Jaar.

A Yemeni presidential aide, quoted by CNN and Yemen Voice News, acknowledged that at least two US aircraft had been carrying out “attacks daily since mid-April in southern areas controlled by Al Qaeda fighters.” He went on to say that this was part of a strategy to remove al-Qaeda’s roots in the areas it controlled.

Whilst there were no reports of civilians killed or injured in the airstrike, Associated Press (AP) reported that the al-Qaeda “training camp” which had been hit was set up around an abandoned munitions factory. The factory later “exploded killing at least 100 people. The blast was ignited when impoverished townspeople entered the factory in the aftermath (of the airstrike) to try and haul away anything of value that remained.”

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Four Al Qaeda militants were killed by alleged Yemeni or US airstrikes in the southeast of the town of Loder located in the south of Yemen on the 30th of April 2012. No civilian harm was reported.

Reuters reported that the airstrike hit a vehicle which killed four militants inside. Witnesses reported a series of multiple airstrikes.

Locals told Xinhua that the strikes targeted Al Qaeda hideouts. AFP added that a tank and two vehicles loaded with ammunition and machine guns were simultaneously destroyed and that militant positions in the mountains southeast of Loder were hit by the airstrikes, with Nashwan News specifying the location to be Al Qaeda sites in Mount Yusef.

On June 20th, a jihadist website reported that Muhammad Fazi al Harasheh, aka Abu Hammam al Zarqawi, had died in a drone strike on a vehicle. Al Zarqawi was the nephew of former Al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi, killed by the US in 2006. Initial reports suggested he had been killed by a landmine. Although the precise date of his death is unknown, the April 30th strikes appear to most closely match the description. The Long War Journal reported a militant statement as saying: “They were unable to kill him in the battles, so they sent spies to guide them to him. A drone came to bomb the car in which he and one of the brother were riding, and so his pure soul went to its maker.” With this information, it is unclear whether al Zarqawi was killed in this incident or another incident that occurred on the same day (USYEM071-B), since he was known to operate in Abyan province which Zinjibar and Loder are both a part of. The mention of a drone indicated that the US was involved in the strike.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Three Al Qaeda militants were killed by airstrikes allegedly carried out by US and/or Yemeni forces in the Al Jawf governorate on April 29, 2012.

On April 29th, 2012, tweets began appearing from @alshadadi1986, Nabeel Alodainai (@imc_r) and Suhail News concerning the killing of three Al Qaeda operatives in a car moving through the AlJawf governorate. Later, Yemeni military sources stated that three suspected Al Qaeda operatives were killed in an airstrike that targeted their car traveling in the Al Hasm area of the Al Jawf governorate. Mareb Press cited a Yemeni military official speaking on anonymity who confirmed the targeting of the vehicle, but the official did not state whether it was the Yemeni military or U.S. drones that conducted the strike. However, the Yemen Air Force did not have capabilities to strike moving cars.

Additionally, a tribal witness told Mareb Press that the operatives were traveling to visit families of Al Qaeda members killed in armed conflicts with the Yemeni government. This same source added that the car carrying the three men was “completely destroyed”. In a report filed by the Associated Press, an anonymous Yemeni official noted the death of the three men who were allegedly linked with Al Qaeda, but the official could not provide details on their identities, the reasons for their travels in Al -Hasm, or who was responsible for the strike. There are no reports of any civilian deaths.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

On 23rd April 2012, at 10:30 am, the Yemen army and/or US military allegedly conducted a strike in Loder, Abyan province killing between four to 17 suspected AQAP militants, with some sources attributing the militant deaths to artillery bombardment. There are currently no known reports of civilian harm.

Bikyamasr reported that the strike was carried out by Yemeni forces and some sources speaking to the media house said four militants were killed while others claimed that “at least 17 militants were killed”. Local sources corroborated AFP reporting that a Yemeni fighter plane bombed a vehicle, killing four. Reuters added that two suspected Al Qaeda hideouts were also struck in Loder and that residents saw militants carrying their dead comrades toward the village of Umm Ayn for burial.

Nashwan News identified the strike as being carried out at 10:30 in the morning on “Lasof” mountain, outside the city, killing “dozens” of militants. @AlArab_Qatar tweeted that three Somalis were among the militants killed, attributing their deaths to artillery bombardment.

Many sources identified Yemeni air forces as the perpetrator of the strike. However, one source reported that the Yemen Air Force did not having the capability to carry out this kind of precision strike. Other reports confirmed this saying that the air force “lacks the technical ability to carry out precision strikes on moving vehicles.”

The incident occured at 10:30:00 local time.

Airwars assessment

Between eight to 17 Al Qaeda militants were killed and five others were injured in an alleged Yemeni or US air strike in the southeastern province of Abyan on the outskirts of the town of Lawdar, on the 21st of April 2012 in the evening. There have been no reports of civilian harm.

Yemen’s Defense Ministry claimed that 17 alleged Al-Qaeda militants were killed in a house hosting a gathering near Lawder.

However, an official told Xinhua that the attack was undertaken by two fighter jets who killed 12 and injured five alleged militants.

The Yemen Defense Ministry announced that 17 suspected militants were killed in a hideout and witnesses added that three were killed when a vehicle caught fire on a road in Samda located between Jouf and Marib due to a missile strike. They added that others were injured in the vehicle. KUNA counted the destruction of three vehicles.

The Yemen Post reports that the attack killed 11 and destroyed military vehicles. The lowest casualty estimate was provided by @MayaSlman, who tweeted that eight Al Qaeda members were killed.

While multiple sources refer to Yemen officials announcing that their air force carried out the strikes, it is unclear whether the airstrikes were carried out by Yemen or by US drones as AFP notes. As Wikileaks from this time period reveal, in some cases the Yemeni government was instructed to take credit for airstrikes carried out by the US.

The incident occured in the evening.

Airwars assessment

Up to four militants were killed in alleged Yemeni or US airstrikes in Mount Khanfar on April 18, 2012 according to local sources. However, Xinhua reported that there were no casualties.

Dawn News reported that a second air raid hit another position held by militants, but did not provide any further details. Alhawyah quoted a Yemeni military source who said that “warplanes launched air strikes on Al Qaeda sites in the Al-Ain region, and that the raids resulted in the death and injury of dozens of Al Qaeda members, in addition to destroying three armored vehicles and damaging two Al Qaeda personnel.” However, it is unclear whether this refers to the incident near Mount Khanfar or airstrikes in Loder on the same evening.

Dawn News also pointed out that the statement from the Yemeni military did not specify whether the air raids were carried out by the Yemeni government or US drones.

A tweet from @southernissue identified airstrikes as occurring in Mount Khanfar. Yafa News also mentioned that airstrikes hit sites in the Amin Triangle and in the mountains surrounding Baluder, causing damage to military equipment and vehicles. Local residents told Xinhua that two further air strikes targeting militant positions on Jabal Khanfar, a hill over looking the city of Ja’ar in Abyan province, and Xinhua attributed the airstrikes to the Yemeni military.

This incident was the second strike of the day (USYEM062-C).
