Airwars assessment

On the night of September 23, 2023, in Sarmin, Idlib, an incident with contested responsibility—reportedly either by Syrian regime forces or the Russian military—struck an agricultural area, injuring a civilian man, which was confirmed by multiple sources including the White Helmets organization.

The civilian injured was reportedly a farmer who was picking figs in a residential area, when the projectiles struck. The strike was attributed to have been from the Syrian regime or the Russian military. It is contested whether it was a rocket bombing, missile strike, or artillery shelling by different local news sources on Twitter. The White Helmets of the Syrian Civil Defense were photographed helping the injured civilian, and they reported his injuries as minor superficial injuries and followed up with him. However, @AsharqNewsSYR identified the farmer’s injuries as “serious”.

The incident occured during the night.

September 2, 2023

Location

سَرْمِين, Sarmin, Idlib, Syria

Airwars assessment

On the evening of September 2nd, 2023, in Sarmin, Idlib, an incident with contested responsibility— reportedly either a Syrian regime artillery attack or a Russian airstrike—killed six-month-old Yaman Munther Baydoun and injured at least three other civilians, including a child, with casualties confirmed by multiple sources including the White Helmets organization.

The majority of reports on this incident agree that the incident was an artillery bombardment by Syrian regime forces, resulting in a death and four civilian injuries, one of whom was a child and a sibling of the deceased infant Yaman Munther Baydoun. The injured child can be heard saying “I want my brother” to the Civil Defense volunteers in a video taken while they were trying to rescue the survivors. The infant casualty Yaman Munther Baydoun is said to have been six months old and an image of him before his death was shared by many twitter accounts such as @TvIdlib.

There were also many post event photos of young Yaman and his sibling who was also injured, and there were also photos of an older man in hospital provided by the Syrian Civil Defense. The White Helmets source claimed the event was a missile strike on a residential area, and the white helmets subsequently transported the recovered body of the 6 month old Yaman and the other injured to hospitals. The White Helmets source included photos of the deceased infant Yaman and his toy buried under shattered rubble and his injured nephew caked in the same rubble. This source quoted the maximum number of injured civilians of four alongside Yaman’s death. The minimum number of injured civilians were said to be three alongside the death of Yaman, and this minimum number was reported by Zamanalwasl News and NPA Syria.

There appears to be some disagreement regarding the perpetrator of the strike and its nature. All sources concur that it originated from the either the Syrian regime, the Russian air forces, or other Russian and pro-Assad aligned militias. Almost all sources believe that the incident was most likely caused by Syrian regime forces. This excludes three sources who blamed the Russian military: one individual on Twitter/X who also posted a photo of Yaman’s bloodied body in the hospital; another Twitter/X user who also attributed responsibility to Russian aviation; and finally, a local TV station’s Twitter/X account that claimed Yaman’s death was due to Syrian regime and Russian aviation.

The status of the strike is also contested as many sources allege it was an artillery bombardment by Syrian regime forces. However some alleged it was a result of missile strikes.

The incident occured in the evening.

The victims were named as:

Yaman Munther Baydoun يمان منذر بيضون

Airwars assessment

On May 1st 2023, at around 11:35 pm, Israel allegedly conducted airstrikes southeast of Aleppo near al-Nayrab, reportedly injuring up to seven people, and killing between one to seven others. Two civilians were among those injured.

There were discrepancies amongst the casualty reports on how many of the affected were civilians as opposed to people actively involved in fighting. Syrian Arab News Agency, the Syrian-regime controlled news source, and military sources quoted in other media claim that two civilians and five military personnel were wounded in the incident and one soldier were killed. Multiple local sources posted a picture of an elderly civilian being treated for injuries. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that four regime forces and three fighters loyal to Iran were killed. Zaman al wasl also corroborated that Iranian militia were injured.

Baladi news identified three Syrian army forces killed, providing their names as Lieutenant Colonel Hassan Yunis Suleiman, Lieutenant Alaa Hussein Dayoub, and twenty five year old First Lieutenant Muhammad Fayez Melhem. Hassan Yunis Suleiman was a commander of an air defense system for the regime forces and hailed from the village of Sheikh Badr in Tartous governorate. Alaa Hussein came from the village of Bustan Al-Souj in the Tartous countryside, and Fayez Melhem came from the village of Sriji in the Sheikh Badr countryside.

According to Arabia News, the Israeli raids on Aleppo airport coincide with the imminent arrival of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi to Syria.

The strikes also shut down the Aleppo International Airport and according to Idleb on Twitter, hit a foodstuff warehouse and a factory for sifting bulger as well as damaging residential houses in al-Nayrab on Al-Baqar Market Street. Arabia News reported that air to surface missiles were used.

The incident occured at 23:35:00 local time.

Airwars assessment

On April 29th 2023 the Israeli military reportedly launched missiles which Syrian air defence systems reportedly shot down around 12:55 am in the city of Homs, Syria. There were discrepancies in the accounts of the incident, with some sources reported that three civilians were injured while other reported that four Syrian soldiers were injured.

Local sources varied on their descriptions of the strikes and their resulting damage. Most accounts corroborate the timeline of the missile being launched at midnight and shot down, igniting a petrol station, fuel tankers and trucks.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) also claimed that a munitions depot, under Hezbollah control was hit. SOHR – quoted in Aaswat News, Bladipresse, and Achrafieh News – verified that the missiles hit after midnight but claimed that it struck an ammunition depot belonging to the Lebanese “Hezbollah,” in the area of the Dabaa military airport in the countryside of Homs, which led to its complete destruction, as well as weapons trucks. There were a few accounts by the Observatory, including one claim by sources that the “the gas station belongs to a person affiliated with the Lebanese “Hezbollah”. The Observatory later reported that the incident injured “four Syrian soldiers, and destroying a truck carrying weapons belonging to (Hezbollah).” SOHR also reported that “violent explosions were heard as a result of the explosion of the ammunition stored in the warehouse, and fires were seen burning at the site, without information about human losses so far.”

A tweet from @aabnour quoted Intel Times Hebrew that identified the location as “a military convoy belonging to the Lebanese Hezbollah, which was parked at the “Shahr Al-Alewi” gas station near the town of Shinshar on the Damascus-Aleppo road.”

Military sources, who were quoted by Aaswat News, Syrian Arab News Agency (Syrian regime-controlled news), BBC, Almehwar News and other media, claimed that three civilians were injured. Social media posts captured the fire outbreaks.

According to an Israeli website quoted on Halab Today TV,  the missile was prompted by an “Antonov 74” medium sized Iranian cargo plane’s activity in the area.  The IDF did not comment officially on this strike. Homs is near three air defense bases, one of which is in Shinshar, and two are near the suburb of Al-Andalus.

The incident occured between 12:00 am and 12:55 am local time.
