Airwars assessment

At least one child and one woman were killed in alleged YPG artillery strikes on the city of Afrin, Aleppo governorate on January 20th, 2020. Up to five civilians, including two children, were injured, as reported by local sources.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that “the child Muhammad Mar’i and Mrs. Turfah Meqdeh were killed as Syrian Democratic forces fired shells on Al Shari’ya neighbourhood in Afrin city in the northern suburbs of Aleppo governorate, on January 20.” The Syrian Civil Defence reported the death of the child Mohamed Buraei and Tarfa Maqdah. As all sources mention one killed boy, it is likely that sources reported on the same victim. In a statement to Enab Baladi, Ibrahim Abu Al-Laith, director of the media office for the Syrian Civil Defense in Aleppo, stated that the killed woman was 19 years old.

@abowaelo tweeted a photo of a baby in the hospital, stating that the mother of the child was killed during the shelling earlier that day and that doctors managed to save the child by a caesarean operation on the deceased mother. The mother was displaced from Al Midan neighbourhood in Damascus. It is unclear if this victim is the same victim identified as Tarfa Maqdah, although all sources reported one killed woman.

The SCD reported two injured: the children Mehyar Khalaf and Saleh Buraei. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, “‘Kurdish forces carried out rocket attacks from their deployment positions in northern rural Aleppo.” SOHR reported five injured, including children and women.

Whereas @abowaelo reported that the incident occured in the morning, Zaman Al Wasl stated it occurred in the afternoon. Whereas most sources blamed the SDF, @naserhmedi reported that PKK forces fired three missiles onto the city.

The incident occured during the day.

Airwars assessment

Up to ten civilians were injured in alleged SDF or Syrian regime artillery strikes on the city of Azaz, Aleppo governorate, on January 16th, 2020, according to local sources.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitored “a missile strike carried out by the ‘Kurdish forces’ stationed in Maranaz within the northern sector of Aleppo countryside, targeting the city of Azaz under the control of the ‘Turkish forces’ and the factions loyal to it, which resulted in the injury of 8 civilians of varying injuries, including 3 children under the age of 18.”

Smart News reported that Ibrahim Al Laith, director of media of the Syrian Civil Defence, stated that nine civilians were wounded due to shelling by the SDF. Al Laith further reported that the shelling resulted into the burning of a civilian car and the destruction of houses. Local activists, however, told SMART that the Qasd militia, stationed near Meng military airport, were responsible.

Activist Bashar Al Faris told Horrya that an SDF militia based in Maranaz fired six rockets into Azaz at 4:15 PM, resulting into 9 injured civilians, including three children. SyriaTV reported that six Katyusha rockets were fired.

Bas News provided context, stating that the SDF and militias loyal to the Turkish army had erupted on January 16th. Their source stated that “militias loyal to the Turkish army bombed the sites of the Syrian Democratic Forces and the regime in the countryside of Tal Rifaat and the Ming airport in the northern countryside of Aleppo without receiving any reports of human losses.

A Kurdish source familiar with the region told Bas News that “a mutual bombing took place between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the militias loyal to the Turkish army in Azaz in the countryside of Aleppo, which resulted in injuries.”

The incident occured at approximately 4:15 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

A woman was reportedly injured in Turkish artillery strikes on the village of Bashmara, Aleppo governorate, on January 11th, 2020, according to ANF News. Two soldiers of the Syrian regime were killed.

North Press Agency Syria reported that “the Turkish forces and their affiliated armed opposition groups bombed with about 15 shells on Saturday morning the village of Bashmara of Sherawa district, in Afrin countryside”, adding that the shelling killed two members of the Syrian forces.

NPA Syria identified the injured civilian as the woman Zainab Mahmoud Hamada, who was transferred to a medical point of the Kurdish Red Crescent.

Hawar News interviewed the 55-year-old woman, who stated: “When I heard the sound of shells, I moved my son, who was quadriplegic, into the house in order to protect him. When I went out again, the shell fell to the meters next to me and I was hit by shrapnel and then they took me to the hospital.”

Her son, Saeed Hamada, told Hawar News his experience of the attack: “In the afternoon hours, while I was sitting in my shop, I heard the sounds of shells falling on the village, and as a result, I entered the store to avoid the shells that fall in the village. (…) While I was sitting in the shop sheltering from the shelling, I heard the sound of another shell that fell in the village and when I wanted to know where it happened? I saw smoke billowing from the house where my mother resides, and I went straight to the house to see what happened”.

Saeed Hamada rushed to his mother’s house: “When I got home, I saw my mother lying on the ground, unable to move, because she had shrapnel in her foot and the blood was flowing from the foot. Immediately, I carried her and transferred her in a vehicle to a point of the Kurdish Red Crescent in the village of Burj Al-Qas, and from that point, we went to Avrin Hospital in Fafin district.”

The son of the injured woman added: “We demand human rights organisations to stand up to mercenary practices and not allow them to continue with these violations that affect civilians.” According to the family, “mercenaries are seeking to empty their areas of their inhabitants”.

The incident occured in the morning.

The victims were named as:

55 years old female injured
