Airwars assessment

At least one civilian, an employee of a water station, was injured when Al-Arshani water station was bombed by alleged Russian forces on January 2, 2022.

A tweet from @AlhasanMahar reported that Russian forces bombed Al-Arshani water station, which is “responsible for delivering water to about a quarter of a million civilians” in Idlib. @thiqanewsagency added that the station was completely out of service and Al Souria News identified the station as the only water station serving the city of Idlib.

@IrfaaSawtak quoted local civil defense forces who said that a worker at the station was injured. Syrian Network for Human Rights also identified one of the employees of the water station as having been injured in the strikes.

According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, the airstrikes damaged “the station’s structure and its perimeter fence, in addition to severely damaging the main pipeline used for pumping, and other essential equipment.” The source also confirmed that the station is in a residential area and is free of any “military presence and equipment”.

Zaman Al Wasl also reported that airstrikes hit a factory for the productions of foodstuffs west of the city in addition to the strikes on the water station.

The Director-General of the Drinking Water Corporation, Muhammad Jamal Diban, said to Fresh Syria: “The Al-Arashani drinking water station in the city was bombed yesterday by Russian aircraft and was out of service, so we worked on emergency solutions, which is to operate the old project.”Diban added that “the project provides the city with 3,500 cubic meters per day, in addition to operating stations and internal wells to reduce the burden on residents.” Diban explained, “At the level of work, we have removed the rubble, secured the necessary supplies and changed the damaged parts. As a quick and temporary solution, we seek to supply the city of Idlib with water until the Al-Arashani station is repaired, which [supplies water to] 350 to 400 thousand people.”

The majority of the sources that reported on the incident attributed the airstrikes to Russian warplanes. A tweet from @adlbhamam1985, a local journalist, identified two raids as being carried out on Al-Arashani.

The incident occured in the afternoon.

According to Syria TV, two people were killed and others were injured in Russian airstrikes on a farm on the outskirts of Kafr Dariyan. At the time of reporting an unknown number of civilians were still under the rubble of the building destroyed.

A tweet from @AishaSapri also identified two people as being killed and identified the location of the strikes as being near a housing camp for the displaced, adding that this is the second day in a row that strikes have occurred in this area.

Baladi News’ correspondent provided the names of the two civilians killed: the owner of the farm, “Hassan Khalil Bakrish“, and the teacher, “Jihad Saeed Deeb.” Various sources refer to Jihad as being a “professor” and an Arabic Language teacher.

A video posted by @abdalwhab761 shows the remains of two workers on a chicken farm who were allegedly killed by Russian airstrikes.

Sy-24 reported that the airstrikes completely destroyed the affected location and that others were “seriously” injured, without providing an estimate of how many. Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that five others were injured in the airstrikes.

Syrian Civil Defense also mentioned the great damage caused the construction of the poultry house in addition to the death of birds in the area killed by the airstrikes. Syrian Network for Human Rights added that in addition to damage to the poultry house, an adjacent house was also damaged.

A tweet from @jamlyyyyy_ reported that Russian warplanes were targeting rebel positions in Kafr Dariyan without providing any details on casualties.

The majority of the sources that reported on this incident attributed the strikes to Russia. A tweet from @MghrdSwry also specifically mentioned vacuum missiles being used in the attack and @Almohrar1 put the number of raids carried out at six.

The incident occured in the afternoon.

The victims were named as:

Hassan Khalil Bakrish حسن خليل بكريش
Age unknown owner of the farm killed
Jihad Saeed Deeb جهاد سعيد ديب

Between two and five civilians, including up to two women and three children, were killed and up to 12 others, including women and children, were injured in alleged Turkish strikes on Zarkan ( Abu Rassein) on December 30, 2021.

According to the Hawar News Agency, three civilians, Jamala Musa Al-Nahar, Jawaher Musa Al-Nahar, and the two-year-old child Allam Ali Al-Issa, were killed and five others were injured in a Turkish bombing of Zarkan. Turkey Now put the number of injured at four.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Jamala and Jawaher were sisters and Allam was the two year old child of Jawaher. North Press Agency identified Jamala as being an employee in the municipality of Al-Asadiya village. All were killed in artillery and missile shelling and in addition to the injury of five civilians, two members of the Syrian Democratic Forces were injured. The shelling allegedly struck a mosque in the town of Zarkan as well.

Airwars assessment

Up to five people, including three women, were killed and up to seven others were wounded in alleged Turkish drone strikes on the city of Kobani at 4pm on December 25, 2021. Sources are conflicted as to whether the victims were civilians in a home or escorts with a Syrian Defense Forces leader.

Hawar News Agency quoted the Autonomous Administration in the Euphrates as reporting that a Turkish drone attack in Kobani killed two civilians and injured seven others after striking a home east of the city. The statement added that all of the victims were taken to the city’s hospitals.

Hawar News later updated the death toll to five civilians killed by Turkish drone strikes. The Council of Martyrs’ Families in Kobani told Hawar that among the injured who were receiving treatment in the hospital, three lost their lives despite all the doctors’ attempts to save their lives. The source also provided the names of those killed: Nujian Ocalan, Vian Kobani, Rojen Ahmed Issa, Murhaf Khalil Ibrahim, and Walid Muhammad Manla Hussein. An image also provided shows that three of the victims were women.

A Facebook post from Ain Issa Plus identified Murhaf Khalil Ibrahim as being affiliated with the revolutionary youth in Ain Issa and added that he was killed at a gathering of SDF elements.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Turkish drones struck a house in the Maktalah neighbourhood near a Russian base east of Kobani city and the attack left two persons dead and three others wounded.

A media activist in Hasaka, Abu Omar al-Bukamali, told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that a Turkish drone targeted a SDF leader in the city of Ayn al-Arab, killing his escorts and wounding seven others, some of them civilians, who were in the vicinity of the site. It is unclear if those referred to as escorts were also members of the SDF or civilians.

However, the co-chair of the Interior Ministry in the Euphrates region of the Autonomous Administration, Buzan Khalil, told local media that a Turkish army drone targeted a civilian house housing displaced people from the city of Tal Abyad in the Biman neighborhood, east of the city of Kobani, which led to the killing of two civilians and wounding seven others.

All of the sources that reported on the incident attributed the drone strikes to Turkey.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
