Airwars assessment

Up to 12 civilians including four children and four women died and as many as dozens more were wounded in airstrikes on Batbo town. The majority of sources attributed the event to Russia; however, several blamed the Syrian regime while some others didn’t distinguish between Russian or regime jets.

According to the Shaam News Network, “Russian warplanes targeted the town of Batbo at noon today [Sept 10th]. This resulted in deaths and injuries and destruction of residential structures.

Activists said warplanes struck civilian houses with several missiles resulting in dramatic damage to seven homes, and claiming the lives of more than nine martyrs with many wounded. The civil defense teams worked to dig out those trapped under the rubble and transport the injured to hospitals and medical facilities”.

The Network added that the Grand Mosque in the town came “under direct bombardment”, partially destroying its walls and completely putting it out of service.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights, who initially blamed the regime but then appeared to change its position and point to Russia, said that the strikes ” targeted the vicinity of Mousa ben Nousair mosque in Batbo town”. It put the death toll at 12 including four children and four women.

Other sources that blamed Russia included LCCSY, Qasioun, the Step News Agency, Jisrtv, Alamawi and Baladi – who added that “dozens” of people were wounded. Qasioun, who put the death toll at nine, reported that 30 more people sustained injuries.

However, SMO and Syriansnews attributed the event to the Assad regime.

Al Jazeera and Abohamzaljaber blamed both “Russian and Syrian warplanes”.

Halab News – who blamed Russia – named civilian fatalities.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Between 12 and 20 civilians died and up to 21 more were wounded in an airstrike on a UN/Syrian Arab Red Crescent aid convoy (reportedly consisting of up to 12 trucks) in Urma al Kubra, Aleppo, according to local media – though sources were conflicted as to whether Russia or the Assad regime were to blame. Amnesty condemned the attack as “a flagrant violation of international law”.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that “government helicopters and fixed-wing warplanes, believed to be Russian, took part in a concentrated attack that comprised multiple airstrikes on a center for the Red Crescent in eastern Urm Al Kubra town. The bombardment lasted for three hours.”

SN4HR went on to say that “government helicopters dropped no less than four barrel bombs while the fixed-wing Russian warplanes carried out nine airstrikes using missiles and heavy machine guns. The bombardment mostly targeted the Syrian Red Arab Crescent (SARC) center and destroyed a U.N. aid convoy of trucks that were supposed to deliver aid to warehouses belonging to the Red Crescent center. Additionally, the bombardment targeted also medical and civil defence teams who tried to rescue the wounded and injured relief workers.”

The relief trucks were from the Red Crescent organization and were staffed by volunteers. Multiple local and global media sources reported that the bombardment lasted roughly three hours, and only struck Red Crescent trucks and a Red Crescent supply center. LCCSY, for instance, stated that the warplanes “caused the burning of more than 20 trucks carrying humanitarian aid, and the destruction of the center.”

Step News Agency, who put the death toll at 12, said that all of the victims were “employees and volunteers” of the Red Crescent.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights published a report which argued that the strike was purposefully targeted: “The frequency of the strikes during the three hours, meaning that more than one missile was used and more than one strike were carried out so the attack wasn’t indiscriminate or by accident. In fact, four barrel bombs were dropped and the area was targeted with several missiles. Also, heavy machine guns were used to keep medics and civil defence teams away.”

Additionally, there was a statement by Mr. Stephen O’Brien, United Nations Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, which said: “Notification of the convoy – which planned to reach some 78,000 people – had been provided to all parties to the conflict. So the Russian and Syrian regime were already aware of the place and the time at which the convoy was passing.”

The incident occured at approximately 7:30 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

Between two and five civilians died in the Al Zabadia neighbourhood of Aleppo. While most sources blamed Russia, there was also an allegation against the Syrian regime.

LCCSY reported: “Two martyrs and ten wounded were reported as Russian warplanes carried out cluster bomb attacks on the Zabadia neighborhood.”

Syrian Press Center reported a higher death toll, referring to “massacre in the Zabadia neighborhood by a Russian plane, killing 5 people.”

But the Syrian Human Rights Committee said that “three people were killed by rocket-propelled grenades fired at the neighborhood.” It didn’t identify the culprit.

According to Alsouria, “”the fighters and helicopters of the Syrian regime and Russian aircraft, bombed throughout the day both neighborhoods of Halk, Bustan Al Basha, and Ard Al Hamra, and Tareeq Al Baab, and Al Moyesser, and the Al Mashhad, and the Al Saleheen, and Al Zabdaia, and Katraji, and Ansari.”

Additionally, the Syrian Network for Human Rights reported “bombing of the regime military aircraft and his allies”, resulting in three civilian fatalities.

However, Euphrates Post – who also said that Russia was responsible – was among other sources putting the death toll at 10 civilians.

But the Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that three died in an attack by “government warplanes”.

Some other sources didn’t apportion blame.
