Airwars assessment

Between three and five civilians, including one to two children, were killed and at least 10 others were wounded in alleged Russian airstrikes against the city of Zamalaka in the Damascus countryside. The civilians killed include two child siblings, Omar and Mazan al-Gharbi, and a Civil Defense member, Sameer Mohammad Akram al Ghoush.

According to @alikrarrkar and @amer_almohibany, a residential area was hit by the airstrikes. Reports by most local sources did not identify who was responsible for the airstrikes. However, Syrian Network for Human Rights published conflicting reports that identified both “Syrian-Russian alliance forces” and Syrian regime forces as carrying out airstrikes against Zamalaka. Al Araby also reported that the Syrian regime forces were responsible for the airstrikes.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Between three and five civilians, including at least one child, were killed and several left wounded by Russian and/or Assad waged warplanes striking in Arbeen, eastern Ghouta, Damascus, local media reported.

Without specifying how many were killed on February 22nd alone, Qasioun News and al-Youm reported that between ten and 13 civilians, including five children, were killed in the last 24 hours in Arbeen.

Qasioun blamed both “heavy air, missile and artillery bombardment,” adding that more than 100 also were left wounded during the past day’s shelling.

Specifically reporting from Arbeen on Thursday, February 22nd, other media outlets reported between three and five civilian fatalities. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SN4HR) reported “at least” three fatalities, including one girl, while Damaski Agency and Step News Agency reported five victims.

Damaski Agency also reported the launch of explosive barrels while Damascus Media Center tweeted that clutser bombs had been used.

The majority of sources, including Step News Agency and SN4HR, identified joint Russia/Assad forces as responsible, while Damaski Agency was the only source who only blamed Russia.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Up to five civilians including one child and two women were killed and many were left wounded as Russian or Assad warplanes struck al-Jarthi, Deir Ezzor, possibly supplemented by artillery shelling, local media reported.

Reports spanned from three to five civilian fatalities.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SN4HR) reported that one girl and two women from the same family were killed, blaming Syrian regime artillery” for their deaths.

The remaining sources reported five civilian fatalities, though all mentioned that two women – the wives of a Eid al-Fahmi – and his child were killed.

Moreover, one female IDP from the village of Abu Hardub and a man identified as “the son of  Mohammed Al Dahsh” were among the fatalities, as reported by for example DeirEzzor24.

DeirEzzor24 also reported that many civilians were left wounded.

Both SN4HR and DeirEzzor24 blamed the Syrian regime, though SN4HR blamed Assad artillery and not airstrikes like DeirEzzor24. Meanwhile Euphrates Post and al-Raya identified Russia as responsible.

Airwars assessment

Local media reported that five people were killed following airstrikes on Tabiyeh Shamieh, Deir Ezzor Governorate. Three of those who died were named in two separate reports from Euphrates Post.

Sources said the location of the incident was the “water crossing” at Tabiyeh Shamieh. According to the Syrian Observatory some civilians were “permanently disabled” following the strikes, “while others who were injured are still critical” with the death toll expected to rise. The Observatory referred to both Russian and Coalition planes at work in the vicinity, though did not specify who was to blame for the Tabiyeh Shamieh incident specifically.

There remains significant confusion in reporting. Euphrates Post and Sydusyria alleged Russian forces of being solely responsible; Step and Shaam News Network did not specify a culprit – Shaam claimed “all planes were bombing” whilst Step described a “bombardment of dozens of raids”.

Smart reported Russia had targeted the area in, conjunction with the Regime, The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights alleged the US-led Coalition responsible for the attack and resultant loss of civilian life.

A Smart report quoted a statement from the Russians, “The ministry said in a statement that the Veliky Novgorod and Kolpino submarines in the eastern part of the Mediterranean had targeted “locations” of the Islamic State in the south-eastern Deir es-Zour countryside (without specifying the location)”. It is unclear whether this statement relates to the incident at Tabiyeh Shamieh water crossing.

Shaam said that none of the planes (Russia, Coalition or the Regime) “have taken any notice of the lives of children, women and the elderly” as they bomb areas besieged by so-called Islamic State in Deir al-Ghazal countryside.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Up to five civilians died and up to 12 more were wounded in an airstrike on Aleppo’s Al Qaterji neighbourhood, according to local sources. Multiple reports said that a bakery was struck. The majority of sources attributed the deaths to Russia, though one report also said that the regime had carried out strike on Aleppo on this day.

According to Shahba, “there were four martyrs including a woman and a child, and 12 more people were wounded due to Russian warplanes shelling a bakery”.

The Smart News Agency also put the death toll at four, stating that “the civil defence said they’d recovered three bodies from the rubble including women and children.”

But the Step News Agency reported that the regime may have been involved: “Russian and Syrian warplanes carried out many raids in Aleppo today [Oct 14th]. In Qaterji, a bakery was targeted and one person was killed and others wounded.”

Alaraby said that five people had died, while Nader added that many of the wounded were children.

Halab Today reported the use of phosphorous bombs.
