Airwars assessment

Between one and five civilians, including one woman, were killed and up to “dozens” more were left wounded following aerial shelling of Ma’aret Harma, Idlib, local media reported. Sources were conflicted as to whether this was the work of Russia or the Assad regime.

Following the incident, Fresh News’ correspondent reported that a woman was killed and civilians were wounded. Several reports echoed this, reporting one or two fatalities, all mentioning one female victim.

However, @AleppoAMC, gave much higher tolls, reporting five deaths and the wounding of dozens more.

While several sources pointed to the Syrian regime as the culprit, just one, Fresh News, attributed the event to Russia.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

The victims were named as:

Airwars assessment

Five civilians, including at least two children, were killed and up to ten more were wounded in alleged Russian or Syrian regime airstrikes on the city of Ma’arat Al Numan on May 30th, 2019, according to local sources.

The Syrian Civil Defence (@SyriaCivilDefe) reported that “five martyrs elevated and 10 others were injured, trapped under rubble as a result of airstrikes targeting the neighbourhoods of Ma’arat Al Numan city this morning, civil defence teams are still searching for survivors under the rubble.”

@ajmurgent wrote that “four children and a woman were killed in raids by Russian airliners and Assad’s warplanes on Ma’arat Al Numan in Idlib countryside.” Okaz News also stated four children were among the victims.

Local Coordination Committee for Syria identified five victims of the attack, including two children, two women and one young man. Macro Media Center, however, reported the same names, stating four of them were children. The Syrian Human Rights Committee reported Raghad Qashit as being an adult woman, while the MMC stated she was a child. Abd Al Hadi Qashit was reported a child by MMC and the SHRC, but the LLCSy stated he was a young man.

Syria Noor reported that in addition to five fatalities, ten more civilians, mostly women and children, were injured in the strikes with four high-explosive missiles. Smart News Agency also stated that 10 others had been wounded in the strike.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that “at least five civilians, including two children (one male and one female) and two women, were killed as Syrian regime warplanes fired missiles on al Gharbi neighbourhood in Ma’arat Al Numan city, on May 30.” According to this source, most of the victims in the attack were “from the same family.”

Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told Okaz News that the targeting of a residential area led to a building collapsing on its residents – adding that the majority of the civilians was still asleep when the strikes occured in the morning.

Okaz adds that “paramedics pulled a bloody teenager out of the rubble, who was killed on his bed by the building. Next to him, his brother was trapped under the rubble and was still alive.”

While most sources blamed the Syrian regime for the airstrikes, a few others, such as @ajmurgent and Step News Agency, blamed both the Syrian regime and Russia. @Omar_Madaniah reported only Russia as the responsible belligerent.

The incident occured in the morning.

Airwars assessment

Up to five civilians, including a child and woman, were killed and “many” wounded following Assad or Russian-waged aerial shelling of Hamouriya, eastern Ghouta, Damascus, local media reported.

According to local reports, the incident in Hamouriya was one out of many that day in eastern Ghouta. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), this was the “most bloody day in Syria in the latest few weeks” referring to the bombardments of eastern Ghouta.

An activist told al-Araby that four civilians, including a child, were killed by shelling of Hamuriya, and most reports agreed that four civilians were killed. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported five fatalities, adding that a child and a woman were among these.

Without specifying, sources mentioned that “several” or “many” civilians were left wounded.

Finally, it remains unclear who is to blame. Even though most sources identified the Syrian regime as responsible, Russian culpability cannot be excluded as Local Coordination Committees of Syria pointed to both “Russian and Assad raids”.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

In a second round of strikes on the 29th, a charity hospital supported by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was reportedly  hit in an aerial attack by alleged Russian warplanes, killing as many as five civilians and wounding others. Sources all attributed the blame to Moscow.

Wounded civilians from a raid on the potato market (see incident R2744) were being treated in Owdai hospital when it was struck.

According to a report published by Médecins Sans Frontières, “At around 10:20 am on 29 January, Owdai hospital (also known as Al Ihsan hospital) in Saraqab City in Idlib Governorate was damaged by two airstrikes, which destroyed part of the hospital building. Other medical staff said a first strike hit the hospital waiting room and a second hit an area in front of the hospital, destroying an ambulance parked there. The facility receives donations of medicines and supplies for its emergency department from MSF.

The attack occurred while the hospital was receiving injured people from an airstrike that occurred about an hour earlier hitting Saraqab´s main market, killing eleven people, according to the hospital manager. He said the attack on the hospital itself resulted in at least five deaths, including a child, and injuries to at least six people including three medical staff.

Owdai hospital has now been closed indefinitely.

The 18-bed Owdai hospital is the only public hospital in Saraqab District in the eastern Idlib countryside serving a population of 50,000. Prior to the attack, the hospital had an emergency room and outpatient department, and provided general and trauma surgery. The hospital performed an average of 3,800 consultations a month.”

Local media reported that a doctor broke his leg in the strike, a police officer was injured, as were three journalists.

Footage published shows civilians being dug from the rubble in the aftermath of the raid.

The incident occured at 10:20:00 local time.

Airwars assessment

Up to five civilians including two children and possibly a woman were killed in an airstrike on Nasri, according to local sources – though reports were conflicted as to whether this was the work of Russia or the Assad regime.

Hassaka’s Youth Union reported that “two orphaned children, the grandchildren of the citizen Mohammad Al Khaled, were martyred and their mother was injured following an air raid on the village of al Nasri in abdul Aziz mountain.” But they did not say who was responsible.

However, the Shaam News Network and All4Syria blamed Russia, while the Damascus Center for Human Rights Studies also said it was likely that Russian warplanes committed the attack.

Siraj al Hasskawi said that there was a second Russian bombing on Nasri, targeting civilian homes of “two orphaned children who were killed by the Russian bombardment and their mother injured, it should be noted here that these villages are inhabited by the al bouma’eesh clan from AlBakara al A’rabiya tribe.

But Al Arabi Aljadid said the regime was responsible and put the death toll higher at four including two children, all from one family.

Syrian Desk News also blamed the regime, citing the death of the two children and the wounding of two other non-combatants, again all from the same family.

A Hassakah activist, Siraj Al Hasskawi, reported that the injured mother, named as Mrs Fidda Al Maghir, later died from her wounds, though it was unclear from the post who carried out the attack, saying that she joined her children “who were killed by the bombing of Russian, American and Assad planes in the village of Al Nasri in Abdul Aziz mountain west of Al Hassaka.

According to Alhasakaalhadath, “Two orphans, descendants of Mohammed Al-Khaled died and their mother was hit by an air raid on the village of Nazareth, mount Abdulaziz.” The source did not say who was responsible.

But Albawaba News reported that it was likely a Russian strike occurring at 11am, when two missiles targeted a home where two children lived. The report said that the children died – grandchildren of Mohammed al Khaled – while their mother suffered “moderate injuries“.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Up to five civilians including one woman were killed and dozens were wounded in alleged Russian or regime airstrikes on Jisreen, eastern Ghouta, Damascus, local media reported.

The death toll amounted to three or four, sources on the ground said. However, a total of five fatalities were identified by name by Zaman al-Wasl and Damascus Media Center; four men and one woman. Three of the men were most likely related.

While most sources only mentioned aerial shelling, RFS Media Office, who did not identify the culprit, also reported artillery strikes.

Sources were conflicted in terms of culpability. Damascus Media Center pointed to Russia, while Baladi News and the Syrian Network for Human Rights blamed the Syrian regime.

Airwars assessment

In multiple alleged Russian or Assad regime airstrikes which struck residential buildings, in Aleppo’s Al Maysar neighbourhood, a family of five and an elderly man were reportedly killed.
