Airwars assessment

Up to five civilians died and up to 12 more were wounded in an airstrike on Aleppo’s Al Qaterji neighbourhood, according to local sources. Multiple reports said that a bakery was struck. The majority of sources attributed the deaths to Russia, though one report also said that the regime had carried out strike on Aleppo on this day.

According to Shahba, “there were four martyrs including a woman and a child, and 12 more people were wounded due to Russian warplanes shelling a bakery”.

The Smart News Agency also put the death toll at four, stating that “the civil defence said they’d recovered three bodies from the rubble including women and children.”

But the Step News Agency reported that the regime may have been involved: “Russian and Syrian warplanes carried out many raids in Aleppo today [Oct 14th]. In Qaterji, a bakery was targeted and one person was killed and others wounded.”

Alaraby said that five people had died, while Nader added that many of the wounded were children.

Halab Today reported the use of phosphorous bombs.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Up to seven people from the same family including between two and five children and up to two died and more were wounded in an airstrike on Ma’ar Shmareen village, according to local media – though sources were conflicted as to whether this was the work of Russia or the Syrian regime.

The lowest death count was given as two by @spm_syria, who blamed the regime.

Halab Today attributed the event to Russia, reporting that seven people from one family including two children and a woman died. @RevolutionSyria also pointed to Russia.

But a number of other sources attributed the event to the Syrian regime.

According to Syria News Desk, “a man and his wife and five of their children were killed and two other children were injured, overnight, as a result of regime warplanes carrying out two raids with heavy machine guns the village of Maar Shmareen, south east of Maarat al Numan”.

@Hasan_Jneed tweeted images showing “the work of civil defence teams during the rescue operation of a strike which killed seven people from one family, including five children”.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights joined a number of reports in not identifying the culprit; it put the death toll at five from one family including two women.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

On 20th October 2016, the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation reported on the decisions made aimed towards stabilising the situation in Aleppo.

""Today, strikes by the Russian Aerospace Forces and the Syrian Air Force are finished at 10:00 (MSK) in the area of Aleppo. Early termination of the airstrikes is essential for holding a “humanitarian pause” on October 20, 2016”, said General of the Army Sergei Shoigu. According to him, it will allow to guarantee security of civilians leaving the city through 6 humanitarian corridors and to prepare casualty and medical evacuation from the eastern part of Aleppo.
“We apply to the leadership of countries influencing on armed formations active in the eastern part of Aleppo with a proposal to convince their leaders to stop warfare and leave the city,” stated the Minister of Defence.
According to General of the Army Sergei Shoigu, by the start of the “humanitarian pause” the Syrian troops will have been withdrawn to the distance safe for insurgents to leave the city with weapons through two special corridors: one – along the Kastello road, second – in the area of Suk al-Hai market."

Airwars assessment

As many as 20 civilians were killed, and dozens more were wounded, in an airstrike on Ariha. Sources were conflicted as to who was to blame. Around half the sources blamed Russian warplanes, while the rest pointed to the Syrian regime. Some sources such as Idlib Media Centre blamed both parties for the raids.

SMO reported that the rockets used were highly explosive, while others said they had sighted vacuum bunker-buster missiles.

The airstrikes reportedly struck residential homes, which led to the collapse of three buildings and huge amounts of material damage. It was reported that an entire family of four were killed when a missile struck and destroyed their home.

Additionally, dozens of other civilians were trapped and wounded. According to RFS, a child was stuck under the rubble for hours after the raid. Similarly, other sources reported there were many missing civilians and the White Helmets worked tirelessly to dig people out of the rubble.

Many of the wounded were allegedly unidentifiable due to “charring” of the bodies.

The incident occured around dawn.

The victims were named as:

Airwars assessment

Up to one civilian was killed, plus one woman and a man were reportedly injured as a result of contested action by Russian forces or the Syrian regime when a marketplace and a residential neighbourhood was hit by artillery and missile shelling in the city of Atareb, west of Aleppo, Syria. This attack took place on March 23rd 2023, the first day of Ramadan, in the evening.

Syrian Network for Human Rights blamed the Syrian regime and reported that “Syrian regime artillery forces fired multiple shells targeting Atareb city in the western suburbs of Aleppo governorate. A number of shells landed on civilians’ homes, while the remainder landed in the popular market in the city center, injuring one man and woman as well as inflicting moderate damage and partial destruction on shops in the popular market, as well as in the street.”

Al Araby news blamed both the Syrian regime and Russian forces and reported that the attack led to the cancellation of “Tarawih” prayers in the town. @HalabTodayTV reported that the attack happened “at the moment of breaking the fast.”

@KawtharQshqosh was the only source to report that this attack killed a “person”, the other sources all reported that two civilians were injured.

The incident occured in the evening.
