Airwars assessment

Between four and five civilians died in the al Sukkari neighbourhood of Aleppo when a six-storey residential building was destroyed, according to sources on the ground – though reports were conflicted as to whether Russian airstrike or regime artillery or helicopters were to blame. Several sources alleged that Russian used phosphorus bombs in the attack.

The Shaam News Network referred to “four dead and several wounded,” while @syria_pulse mentioned five dead, and said that two people were still trapped under rubble as of noon on September 21st.

Aawsat News said that after midnight, shelling destroyed the residential building completely.

Some sources, such as @thiqanewsagency, referenced both “shelling with rockets” and “barrel bombs”. Alquds and Al Jazeera echoed that language.

@RFS_NORTH tweeted that regime helicopters dropped barrel bombs, as did the Step News Agency.

But several independent sources claimed that Russian warplanes were involved. Smart News said the warplanes dropped phosphorus, as did @Syriapost1.

@HalabNEwsN also said the Russian planes dropped cluster bombs.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Between one and five civilians, including one woman, were killed and up to “dozens” more were left wounded following aerial shelling of Ma’aret Harma, Idlib, local media reported. Sources were conflicted as to whether this was the work of Russia or the Assad regime.

Following the incident, Fresh News’ correspondent reported that a woman was killed and civilians were wounded. Several reports echoed this, reporting one or two fatalities, all mentioning one female victim.

However, @AleppoAMC, gave much higher tolls, reporting five deaths and the wounding of dozens more.

While several sources pointed to the Syrian regime as the culprit, just one, Fresh News, attributed the event to Russia.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Five civilians, including at least two children, were killed and up to ten more were wounded in alleged Russian or Syrian regime airstrikes on the city of Ma’arat Al Numan on May 30th, 2019, according to local sources.

The Syrian Civil Defence (@SyriaCivilDefe) reported that “five martyrs elevated and 10 others were injured, trapped under rubble as a result of airstrikes targeting the neighbourhoods of Ma’arat Al Numan city this morning, civil defence teams are still searching for survivors under the rubble.”

@ajmurgent wrote that “four children and a woman were killed in raids by Russian airliners and Assad’s warplanes on Ma’arat Al Numan in Idlib countryside.” Okaz News also stated four children were among the victims.

Local Coordination Committee for Syria identified five victims of the attack, including two children, two women and one young man. Macro Media Center, however, reported the same names, stating four of them were children. The Syrian Human Rights Committee reported Raghad Qashit as being an adult woman, while the MMC stated she was a child. Abd Al Hadi Qashit was reported a child by MMC and the SHRC, but the LLCSy stated he was a young man.

Syria Noor reported that in addition to five fatalities, ten more civilians, mostly women and children, were injured in the strikes with four high-explosive missiles. Smart News Agency also stated that 10 others had been wounded in the strike.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that “at least five civilians, including two children (one male and one female) and two women, were killed as Syrian regime warplanes fired missiles on al Gharbi neighbourhood in Ma’arat Al Numan city, on May 30.” According to this source, most of the victims in the attack were “from the same family.”

Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told Okaz News that the targeting of a residential area led to a building collapsing on its residents – adding that the majority of the civilians was still asleep when the strikes occured in the morning.

Okaz adds that “paramedics pulled a bloody teenager out of the rubble, who was killed on his bed by the building. Next to him, his brother was trapped under the rubble and was still alive.”

While most sources blamed the Syrian regime for the airstrikes, a few others, such as @ajmurgent and Step News Agency, blamed both the Syrian regime and Russia. @Omar_Madaniah reported only Russia as the responsible belligerent.

The incident occured in the morning.

Airwars assessment

Up to five civilians, including a child and woman, were killed and “many” wounded following Assad or Russian-waged aerial shelling of Hamouriya, eastern Ghouta, Damascus, local media reported.

According to local reports, the incident in Hamouriya was one out of many that day in eastern Ghouta. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), this was the “most bloody day in Syria in the latest few weeks” referring to the bombardments of eastern Ghouta.

An activist told al-Araby that four civilians, including a child, were killed by shelling of Hamuriya, and most reports agreed that four civilians were killed. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported five fatalities, adding that a child and a woman were among these.

Without specifying, sources mentioned that “several” or “many” civilians were left wounded.

Finally, it remains unclear who is to blame. Even though most sources identified the Syrian regime as responsible, Russian culpability cannot be excluded as Local Coordination Committees of Syria pointed to both “Russian and Assad raids”.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
