Airwars assessment

Between 20 and 40 civilians including eight children and four women died in an alleged Coalition airstrike on the Al Awwal and Al Thaleth neighbourhood of Al Tabaqa, according to local media.

All sources attributed the incident to the Coalition, though there was some uncertainly on the date of the incident with a number of sources sources reporting deaths on May 12th from an incident that reportedly occurred “a few days ago”.

Raqqa is being Slaughtered Silently, blaming the Coalition, put the death toll as high as 30. According to a report on May 13th, “a lot of buildings in the second and third neighborhoods have been completely destroyed, some of them still under the ruins of the population, especially in the third district where the number of martyrs is estimated at 40 civilian martyrs, not to mention the destruction of infrastructure.”

The article went on to claim that Kurdish forces “have imposed a curfew in the city, especially in the neighborhoods they have recently controlled. They are now transporting many bodies from houses and rubble and burying them away from the eyes of the media and cameras to say that there are no civilian casualties. The militias also moved the people who were present In neighborhoods to the village area.”

The journalist Mohab Nasser produced reports on May 12th, naming casualties which he said had been the result of a Coalition strike “a few days ago”. Airwars reached out to him to confirm the date of the incident and he told our researchers that “on On 7/5/2017 a warplane belonging to the Coalition attacked a 4-storey residential building in the third district, which led to the destruction of the building and the martyrdom of a number of residents, including three families. He named victims as:

Airwars assessment

A doctor reported to local media that up to 300 civilians had been killed and wounded in 48 hours of heavy fighting in West Mosul

Farid Orfali, a doctor at a German field hospital on the western Mosul border, had told Alaraby news that “more than 300 civilians have been killed and wounded, and we do not know whether the number will rise or it has actually risen [already]. It is not allowed to enter the areas of fighting, as the air and missile strikes continue in the northwestern neighborhoods of the Western side of Mosul.”

The same numbers of dead and wounded were reported by other local media. “The fighting of the last two days on the western side of the city of Mosul is the most violent of its kind in weeks,” a press source had told Yaqein Agency.

Two local sources reported that three children and their mother were killed after a either an airstrike or rocket attack hit their house in Islah Al Zerae neighborhood, in West Mosul.

The Nineveh Media Centre reported that “Local source confirmed the martyrdom of three children and their mother when a rocket attack targeted their house.” Revolution Iraqiu claimed the attack was ‘a bombing by the Coalition.”

Three civilians were killed and three injured in a mortar strike by an unknown party during the battle for control of al Hermat, according to an Amnesty International field investigation.

Amnesty shared the following eyewitness report with Airwars: “On 8 May, a mortar shell fell on my neighbour’s house, in Hermat 5, right next to our house. Our house is one street away from al-Haq Mosque and close to the only health centre in Hermat. The Sadeeq al-Amin primary school is also close. The mortar hit around 1pm. The battle had gone on from 8am. Three of my neighbours were killed, and they just buried the dead in their yard. It hit the roof, and we heard the ‘whiiiiish’ and then the explosion. There was shrapnel and stones falling on our heads, and the doors and windows of our house was ripped off. There was so much damage – parts of our house turned to rubble. At least three women were injured – we could hear them crying, ‘Please, come and rescue us.’ And we heard later that at least three were killed. There were huge attacks behind us, next to us, and all around us, so it’s hard to remember all the details of just one attack.”

In June the Coalition confirmed a civilian casualty in what may be this event: “May 8, 2017, near Mosul, Iraq, via self-report: During a strike on an ISIS command and control node, it was assessed that one civilian was unintentionally killed after entering the target area after the munition was released.”

Airwars assessment

In its July 2017 monthly casualty report, the Coalition said it had killed a civilian in the Tammuz 17 area of Mosul. The man’s family reported his name as Laith Azhar Saadallah al-Obeidi.

According to the report, “during a strike on an ISIS command and control node, it was assessed that one civilian was unintentionally killed after entering the target area after the munition was released.”

The Coalition provided Airwars with the location of this incident, accurate to within a one metre box. The location given places the event in the July 17th neighbourhood.

Relatives had posted the following message at the time: “My cousin was martyred on Monday [May 8th. Laith Azhar Saadallah al-Obeidi, after he was hit on his house on July 17, killing him and neighbors buried him in the garden of the house. God is patient with his children.”

According to the Smart News Network two civilians died and seven were injured – in addition to the death of one member of IS and the wounding of two more – in an alleged Coalition airstrike or artillery strike on Tabaqa.

Other reports gave some context, with RFS noting that “Syrian Democratic Forces managed to control the First neighborhood and the national hospital in the city of the Tabaqa, after fierce battles with ISIL and with the support of international coalition aircraft, whose air raids on neighbourhoods led to great destruction.”

In its August monthly casualty report, the Coalition confirmed an event at Tabaqah that day, though these appear to be separate incidents.

For May 7th-8th, the Coalition reported: “Near Tabqah, 15 strikes engaged seven ISIS tactical units and destroyed eight fighting positions and a vehicle.” It later added that “Additionally, two strikes were conducted in Syria on May 7th that closed within the last 24 hours. Near Tabqah, Syria, two strikes engaged two ISIS tactical units and destroyed a fighting position.”

For May 8th - 9th, the Coalition reported: "Near Tabqah, eight strikes engaged seven ISIS tactical units and destroyed five fighting positions" It later reported "Additionally, four strikes were conducted in Syria on May 8 that closed within the last 24 hours. Near Tabqah, Syria, four strikes engaged an ISIS tactical unit; destroyed a fighting position and a mortar system; and damaged an ISIS supply route."

Airwars assessment

Between seven and ten civilians died and dozens more were wounded in an alleged Coalition airstrike on a vehicle carrying displaced civilians at the outskirts of Raqqa, according to local media.

The Step News Agency reported: “On Monday, May 8, the International coalition committed a new massacre in Raqqa province after it targeted a convoy transporting displaced civilians from the countryside of Homs and eastern Hama. The convoy had left Raqqa city and was heading towards Akeirbat in eastern Hama, killing 10 people in an initial toll. Th victims decided to flee from Raqqa after the situation worsened.” The victims were also named by Al Latamna Youth Union.

Other sources also blamed the Coalition, reporting that a bus carrying displaced people was hit. The Syrian Network for Human Rights put the death toll at at least seven

One source, Tayyal91aa, claimed that the incident was fake, reporting that “The missile hit next to the bus and no casualties were reported and that the bus continued its way and arrived safely in Akrabbat with passengers all safe.”
