Airwars assessment

A woman and her disabled son were killed in an alleged Israeli airstrike on their building in Gaza’s al Shati refugee camp. They were identified as Amira Abdel Fattah Subuh and Abdul-Rahman Yusef Ali Subuh.

The airstrike hit the Taiba building, where they lived, in the early hours of the morning on May 11th, 2021. Early reporting indicated the death of one woman, but further reporting identified a second death – the woman’s son who Al Haq said had cerebral palsy. The Associated Press reported that another man was also killed in the airstrike, citing health officials, but no additional information was provided.

Al Haq found two people had been injured in the incident, with them both in a medium to critical condition. According to Palestinian Centre for Human Rights they had been in a nearby house when the strike occurred. @ahmed_rade_2017 shared a photo of a man identified as Ahmed Alsyed, saying he had been seriously injured in the airstrike on the Taiba building. Other sources reported up to four injuries.

The Israeli Defence Force said it had targeted a senior official of the armed wing of Hamas in the attack, according to Haaretz. A similar statement from the Israeli military was reported by Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor – the home of a battalion commander had allegedly been targeted. But field investigations by the organisation reportedly found no-one had been in the apartment hit at the time. It instead resulted in the collapse of the ceiling of the apartment underneath which lead to the fatalities. Airwars acquired the official statement from the IDF referring to “A  Hamas battalion commander was also targeted” but this statement doesn’t specifically reference the location of the commander.

The building targeted consisted of 13 apartments over seven floors. Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights reported that the top floor was hit with three missiles, while he Palestinian Centre for Human Rights said it was hit with two.

A neighbour, Saleh al-Khaldi, recounted the events of the morning to Middle East Eye.“We were at the mosque doing the al-Fajr [dawn] prayers when a massive explosion rocked the neighbourhood. I ran out to the street to find out that [Israeli warplanes] had targeted a building belonging to the Nasman family, which had apartments that were rented to other families,” he said. “I helped pull out a number of injured residents, as well as two martyred people; a woman and her son who were peacefully sleeping in their home.”

One of Subuh’s surviving children told the Palestinian Ma’an news agency, “I bid farewell to the most precious person in my heart, my mother, and I ask God to have mercy on her.”

B’Tselem collected testimonies from two of Amira’s sons, who are also Abdul-Rahman’s brothers:

Mu’az Subuh, 29, told B’Tselem that “On Monday, 10 May 2021, I went to my mother’s with my wife and daughter for Iftar dinner. We stayed with them until 1:30 A.M. I had a feeling the situation was going to escalate, so I suggested they move in with us. It’s really close, less than a kilometer away, but I thought it would better for them to stay at my place, mainly because my brother, ‘Abd a-Rahman, has cerebral palsy. But my mother refused. We went back home…In the morning, I prayed the dawn prayers and went to my mother’s house. I got to their street around 4:30 A.M. When I was about 50 meters away from the building, I heard a very loud explosion. There were clouds of smoke and dust, and I heard people shouting. The building my mother and brothers lived in had been bombed. I tried to get into the building, but people there stopped me because they were afraid of another strike. They suggested I wait for the ambulance and the Civil Defense crew. They tried to reassure me and told me they’d seen my brother ‘Ali at the mosque and had prayed with him. I felt on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I was sure my family was dead. I saw the sixth and seventh floors had been completely demolished. They looked like one floor. I lost all hope that anyone in my family would make it out alive. Some neighbors went up to the apartment and came back down and told me my brothers Baraa and ‘Ali and ‘Ali’s wife Nasmah were alive. As for my mother and my brother ‘Abd a-Rahman, they said, “We didn’t find them. We’re looking for them, but it looks very bad.” Then they told me my mother was injured and on the way to hospital, and that I should go there. When I arrived, I discovered she’d been killed. I hugged her, kissed her body, and screamed and shouted, “I told you to come to our house! Why didn’t you listen to me?!” Then they put my mother in the morgue.”

Baraa Subuh, 27, told B’Tselem that “On Tuesday, 11 May 2021, at 2:00 A.M., I came home and found my mother and my brother ‘Abd a-Rahman awake. My mother was reading the Quran. I sat down with her, ‘Abd a-Rahman and my sister-in-law Nasmah for the meal before the fast. Then I went back to the living room. At around 4:30 A.M., my brother ‘Ali went to the mosque to pray and my mother told me to go to bed. We went to our bedrooms but a few minutes later, before I’d fallen asleep, the house suddenly collapsed on top of me. The wardrobe fell on me, too, and the wall behind me fell out to the road. There was a lot of dust and I had trouble breathing. There was no power and the house was pitch black. I managed to pull myself out from under the debris and went to the room where my mother and ‘Abd a-Rahman sleep. It was in ruins. I called out but couldn’t see anyone. I started removing the debris to get them out. It was only then that I realized Israeli airplanes had bombed the house while we were in it. There was no warning before they fired. The solar boilers on the roof were leaking into our apartment. I started running around the house looking for ‘Abd a-Rahman and the rest of the family. I found my sister-in-law Nasmah and told her to go down to the ground floor. I also found my brother ‘Ali, who was looking for my mother and ‘Abd a-Rahman. In the end, we found mother’s body under the rubble. I started removing the debris that was covering her. Meanwhile, an ambulance and Civil Defense crews arrived, so I put her on a stretcher and told ‘Ali to go with her. I stayed home to look for ‘Abd a-Rahman with the Civil Defense crew and people from the neighborhood. Suddenly, I felt weak and short of breath. I was given first aid and taken to a-Shifaa Hospital. ‘Abd a-Rahman was under the rubble for an hour and a half before we found him. The paramedics brought him to the hospital. Because of the amount of rubble, I didn’t believe he’d survive and when we found him, he was lifeless. When I saw that my brother ‘Abd a-Rahman was dead, I felt great sorrow. I also saw my mother lying lifeless and felt she was sending a message that she wanted to die along with ‘Abd a-Rahman, because he was disabled and we have no father, so there would be no one to care for him without her. ‘Abd a-Rahman was very attached to her.”

Most sources reported that Abdul-Rahman Yusef Ali Subuh was 19 years old, although a single source recorded him as 13-years-old. His mother, Amira, was aged between 57 and 61.

The majority of sources attributed the strikes to Israel. B’Tselem pointed out that “A Hamas military wing operative lived on the seventh floor. He was not home at the time. It is not known whether that was the reason for the strike.” Mu’az and Baraa Subuh, relatives of the victims, said that there was no warning before the strike.

The incident occured at 04:40:00 local time.

Airwars assessment

Al least one civilian, a child, was killed in alleged Israeli drone strikes on Shejaiya neighborhood on May 11th 2021.

Hamza Mahmoud Yassin Ali, between 10 and 12 years old, was killed in the strikes on Shejaiya. @MahmOudEssaaM__ tweeted that he was killed when “he went out of the house to buy home supplies for his blind mother” and @wassilaoulmi added that he was “on his way to bring vegetables to his family for breakfast”.

Al Qabas published details that “Hamza was fasting and had left his home in Al-Shuja’iya neighborhood, east of Gaza City, 3 hours before the time of breaking the fast on the penultimate day of Ramadan, to buy some vegetables for his family from the neighborhood market, which is about one kilometer from the house, when a Zionist warplane launched an air raid, near “Abu al-Kas cemetery.”

Defense for Children International Palestine reported that Hamza “was struck by shrapnel from an Israeli drone-fired missile” and “was participating in a funeral procession near his home when he sustained wounds to his abdomen and lacerations on his limbs”.

The following morning after the strike, on May 12th at 10:40am, Palestinian Centre for Human Rights reported that “medical sources announced the death of the child Hamza Mahmoud Yassin Ali, 12 years old, as a result of his severe injury yesterday as a result of the bombing of the Shejaiya neighborhood in Gaza, where he lives and was wounded by fragments scattered in the body and underwent surgery and remained in intensive care until it was announced his death.”

Al Qabas added that “Hamza, aged 12, remained an unidentified martyr for several hours in Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, before his father recognized him, who went to the hospital in search of him after a long wait and did not return home. Hamza, the fifth among his brothers, belongs to a poor family, and was forced to work to help his father, Abu Yasser Nassar, and his mother, who is blind.” According to @M_Durmaz_Ar, Hamza “was in the sixth grade and one of the first in his school” and @turkwahtarab tweeted that “Hamza was a man the age of a child, and because of his family’s circumstances and his father’s economic hardship, he used to rely on himself in many things, and even his family relies on him to perform daily tasks even though he is not the largest among males.”

Abu Yasser Nassar (uncle of the martyr’s father) told Al Jazeera Net, “Hamza lived a miserable life, but God wrote for him this beautiful ending with death as a fasting and smiling martyr until his image became a symbol for the children of Palestine who lose safety and risk death every moment. He was distinguished among his four brothers and his three brothers from his father. His love falls in the heart of everyone who sees and deals with him. He was smart in his dealings with people, and excelled in his studies.”

@ShehabAgency identified the location of the strikes as occurring in the Al-Bariah Junction in Shejaiya and other sources pinpointed the strike to Abu al-Kas cemetery. All of the sources that identified who was to blame attributed the strikes to Israel.

The incident occured in the morning.

Airwars assessment

Three members of Islamic Jihad were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a tower block in central Gaza. Numerous sources also reported up to eight injuries, with two reporting children among the injured.

The airstrike targeted the Al-Jundi Al-Majhool building, often referred to as the “Unknown Soldier” building in Gaza’s upmarket Rimal neighbourhood. There was limited information on the identities of those injured or the extent of the injuries in the reporting around the incident. Wafa News reported that most of the eight injured were children, while Al Watan alleged one child had been wounded. Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights recorded seven injuries, all of which they said were moderate to light.

There was significantly more information on the three men who were killed in the airstrike. They were identifed as Sameh Fahim Al-Mamlouk, Kamal Tayseer Qureiqa and Muhammad Yahya Abu Al-Ata.

Some sources identified the men as civilians but information however emerged indicating they were militants. Their deaths were announced of the website of Islamic Jihad. A statement posted on the site read: “On the May 11th, 2021, and on the second day of the Battle of Saif al-Quds, [the name given by militants in Gaza for the May war] the commander Sameh al-Mamluk was on a date with the martyrdom, accompanied by his Mujahideen brothers Kamal Taysir Qureiqa and Muhammad Yahya Abu al-Atta, following a cowardly assassination carried out by the Zionist planes…”

According to the Times of Israel, a spokesperson for the Al-Quds Brigade, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s armed wing, vowed revenge for the deaths. “Our martyrs, commanders Sameh Fahim Al-Mamlouk, Kamal Tayseer Qureiqa and Muhammad Yahya Abu Al-Ata, bled, and we affirm that the response to their assassination will be harsh.”

Images also appeared on social media showing the three men in military fatigues wearing hats which appeared to have the Islamic Jihad emblem on the front.

The Israeli Defence Forces confirmed the airstrike in a tweet which included a video of the incident. The caption read, “This is the moment that the IDF & Israel Security Agency carried out a targeted strike against Islamic Jihad commander, Samah Abed al-Mamluk & other senior members of his unit. They were among those responsible for hundreds of rockets fired at Israelis.”

“An attack was carried out on a hiding place in which senior members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s rocket apparatus were staying,” the Israeli military and the Shin Bet said, according to the Times of Israel.

The main target of the strike appeared to be Sameh Fahim Al-Mamlouk, identified by the Times of Israel as a senior commander of the armed wing. According to the Islamic Jihad website, he joined the Al Quds Brigade in 2004. The other two fighters were reportedly field commanders who oversaw rocket strikes on Israel.

According to World Israel News, Muhammad Yahya Abu Al-Ata was the deputy commander of the Gaza Brigade and one of the heads of the special rocket unit.

There was some confusion in the reporting as Jerusalem Post reported a Hassan Abu al-Ata as being killed in a different strike. He was referred to as deputy commander of the Gaza Brigade as well, with both sources noting the deceased was a brother of Baha Abu al-Atta, a senior Islamic Jihad commander who was killed alongside his wife in an Israeli airstrike in 2019.

An IDF press statement on the 11th May announced that the IDF had struck a multi-story building used by Hamas, stating: “Inside the building were multiple military units used by Hamas, including headquarters used for military research and development, military intelligence offices and more. Prior to the strike, the IDF provided advance warning to civilians in the building and provided sufficient time for them to evacuate the site.”

All three men killed in the airstrike were married, according to the Islamic Jihad website.

The incident occured at 11:25:00 local time.

The victims were named as:

Sameh Fahim Al-Mamlouk سامح المملوك
34 years old male killed
Kamal Tayseer Qureiqa كامل قراقع

The IDF struck a multi-story building used by the Hamas terror organization. The building housed the Hamas organization's military intelligence offices and other units

A short while ago, IDF fighter jets struck a multi-story building in the Rimal neighborhood, in the city of Gaza, used by the Hamas terror organization.
Inside the building were multiple military units used by Hamas, including headquarters used for military research and development, military intelligence offices and more. Prior to the strike, the IDF provided advance warning to civilians in the building and provided sufficient time for them to evacuate the site.

The Hamas terror organization is responsible for the events occurring in, and from, the Gaza Strip, and will bear the consequences of its actions against Israel and her citizens.

The IDF is prepared for a wide variety of scenarios while continuing to fulfill its mission to defend the citizens of Israel.

Airwars assessment

Four members of one family, including two children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a house in Gaza’s Al Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, according to multiple sources.

The airstrike killed 16-year-old Lina Iyad Fathi Sharir, alongside her mother and father, Layali Taha Sharir and Iyad Fathi Fayeq Sharir. Her sister, two-year-old Mina Iyad Sharir, was taken to hospital but died from the injuries she sustained in the blast on May 11th, 2021.

The Israeli Defence Forces confirmed the airstrike in a tweet. They identified Iyad Fathi Fayeq Sharir as the head of Hamas anti-tank missile unit in Gaza, in charge of carrying out anti-tank missile attacks on Israel. They did not mention any further casualties.

Ma’an News also shared an undated image of Iyad Fathi Fayeq Sharir in military fatigues.

Two missiles were fired at the two-story house where the family lived at around 4.30pm, according to Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights. @ISLAMHABIB6 reported that a son who was having a private lesson outside the house survived. Israel Palestine Timeline reported that there were 25 injuries as a result of the  airstrike as it took place in a densely populated area.

Lina Iyad Fathi Sharir was reportedly a 10th Grader at al-Majida Wasila Ben A’mmar Secondary School for Girls in West Gaza. The Norweigian Refugee Council confirmed that she had been participating in its psycho-social programme aimed at helping children deal with trauma.

Daily Sabah reported that Layali Abu al-Khair, which appears to be the previous family name of Layali Taha Sharir, was a biology graduate and the mother of seven children. According to that source three of her children died.

A few hours after the strike, two social media sources posted that Iyad Fathi Fayeq Sharir and five sons died in the airstrike. More detailed reporting that followed however indicated that he had died alongside his wife and two children.

The incident occured at approximately 4:30 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

Between one and two civilians were killed and three others were injured in alleged Israeli strikes on Al Tawahin street in the eastern Shejaiya neighborhood on May 11th 2021.

According to Al Mezan center for Human Rights, “at approximately 9pm, Israel’s air forces targeted a group of people in the Shejaiya neighborhood in eastern Gaza City, killing 34-year-old Mohammed Abdel Rauf Helles“. @RoyaTV also reported that one Palestinian was killed.

Ma`maoun Aldardsawi posted on Facebook an image of a child identified to be Mohammed Helles’ only child and added that after his father was killed, the child kept asking “where is my father?”

Gaza Governorates Electricity Distribution Company also posted that Mohammed Helles was one of the employees and that they were mourning his death.

Cousins of Mohammed Helles,@HellesRiad and @Mohamed28Helles, tweeted that their cousin was killed in Israeli strikes on “the eastern neighborhood of Shejaiya”.

A tweet from @aa_arabic identified “two “serious” injuries after an Israeli bombardment targeting a civilian car in the Shejaiya neighborhood.” It is unclear if the injuries mentioned in this post refer to the same civilians that later died.

B’Tselem collected testimony from Ziad Hiles, 63, a father of nine, Muhammad ‘Abed a-Ra’uf Muhammed Hiles’ cousin, who said “I own a small shop in the neighborhood of a-Shuja’iyeh. About 30 meters away, there’s a shop that used to belong to the martyr Muhammad. On Tuesday, 11 May 2021, at around 9:00 P.M., after the Ramadan meal, I was in my shop. Muhammad came to open up his shop. He always came by before opening. I sat and drank tea with him and with three other young men from my family. About 45 minutes later, Muhammad went to his shop to open it. Just after he got there, I heard a very loud explosion. The whole area was dark because the power was out. I looked towards Muhammad’s shop and saw that the front door had been bombed. I saw him running towards me. His hand was wounded and he was holding it tightly. I called out to him to come quickly and hide in my shop, but he didn’t respond. I guess he didn’t hear me. About a minute after the first missile, before Muhammad could get to my shop, another missile hit him. I was blown backwards from the force of the blast. My son Muhammad, 34, who was next to me, also flew back. I was holding a small flashlight and turned it on to see Muhammad. I crawled over to him and touched his body. I shouted, “Muhammad’s been killed, Muhammad’s been killed.” His body was mutilated. His arms and feet were broken, and everything was full of blood. The neighbors came immediately with a civilian car and took away Muhammad’s body. They also took ‘Ali Jundiyah, who was seriously injured.  About half an hour later, an ambulance arrived and took my son Muhammad and me to a-Shifaa Hospital. I was X-rayed, and they found I had bruises in my pelvic area. I was given a shot and painkillers. My son was injured in his left fingers and had glass shards in his chest. I was discharged that night and went with my wife to my son Tareq’s house in the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood. We couldn’t go home because I was in a bad mental state and also because we were afraid of the airstrikes. We stayed with him until the war was over, and only then went back home….He has one son, who’s four years old. Whenever I see him, I cry and hug and kiss him. I see Muhammad’s mother pass by my shop every day, morning and evening, on her way to visit the grave. Every time I see her, it breaks my heart. Muhammad was a good, respectable man. He used to help the poor and anyone who was in need. I miss him very much. I walk around feeling that something’s missing in the world. I hope he enters into the grace of God and goes to heaven.”

All of the sources that reported on the incident attributed the strikes to Israel.

The incident occured at 21:00:00 local time.
