Airwars assessment

On October 3rd, 2023, a man and a woman, Mohammed Sadek and Asoum Nahbhan were injured by alleged Syrian regime and/or Russian artillery shelling in the outskirts of Sarmin in the eastern countryside of Idlib. Asoum Nahbahn was reportedly moderately injured in the flank while Mohammed Sadek’s injury was described as slight.

The belligerent’s identity is contested, with some sources naming the Syrian regime forces, other sources the Russian military, and some naming both jointly. One Twitter/X post said the artillery shellings came from Assad’s forces “stationed at the surrounding checkpoints”.

Artillery shells reportedly touched the vicinity of the “Hussein Haj Aboud” primary school during official teaching hours. Baladi news reported that teachers had to end classes immediately after the incident for safety reasons and that the artillery shelling “created a great state of terror among the students and families.” The news correspondent claimed that while civilians at the school hadn’t been physically impacted, the external walls were damaged.

Several images taken by the Syrian Civil Defence show civilian homes affected by the attack, with some parts being demolished. Photos also show a tractor which allegedly caught on fire due to the artillery shells. Moreover, a gas station and a car dealership office were reportedly damaged by the incident.

Syrian Civil Defence intervened on the same day. According to two Twitter/X posts, the two injured were transferred to a hospital in Idlib.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

The victims were named as:

Mohammed Sadek محمد صادق
Age unknown male injured
Asoum Nahbhan أسوم نبهان
Age unknown female injured

Airwars assessment

At least two civilians, farmers, were injured in alleged Russian or Syrian regime shelling between the towns of Maarat Al-Naasan and Kafr Nuran on March 23, 2022.

The Syrian Civil Defense reported that two farmers were injured in artillery shelling by Syrian regime and Russian forces on agricultural fields between the towns of Maarat Al-Naasan and Kafr Nuran.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights added that the shelling occurred near the administrative border with Aleppo province.

A tweet from @Blal_Haj_Ahmad, a local reporter, stated that “more than 50 mortar and artillery shells” had been launched in the vicinity of the village of Maarat Al-Naasan., in conjunction with the flight of reconnaissance planes in the area.

The majority of sources that reported on the incident attributed the shelling to regime forces, with North Press Agency specifically blaming “Syrian government forces stationed in the 46th Regiment”. However, the Syrian Civil Defense and Enab Baladi New mentioned both the regime and Russia as being responsible for the injuries. Enab Baladi added that the town is close to the front lines between Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and the regime forces.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Alleged Russian airstrikes in the countryside of Azaz and Afrin, specifically the town of Kafr Jannah and Qatma, resulted in the death and wounding of civilians in addition to the death of up to six militants and the wounding of up to 12 militants.

@shaamnews reported that Russian airstrikes hit the countryside of Azaz and Afrin, killing and wounding Syrian National Army members and civilians. Shaam News was the only source that directly mentioned civilian casualties while others reported that “people” were killed without specifying if they were civilians or militants.

Shaam News also published a statement from the Ministry of Defense in the “Syrian Interim Government” which stated that “The warplanes of the criminal regime this morning, Sunday, October 16, 2022 AD, at eight o’clock, the military and civilian buildings in the regions of Afrin and Azaz, north of Aleppo governorate, with five air strikes that led to the deaths and injuries, most of them civilians. The areas that were targeted this morning include millions of civilians who were displaced due to the crimes of the Assad regime and its allies from the separatist and sectarian terrorist militias.” Shaam put the casualties at two SNA members killed and others wounded.

The Step News Agency correspondent reported that Russian warplanes took off from Hmeimim base in the northern countryside of Latakia and carried out 6 air raids with vacuum missiles against camps of the Turkish-backed opposition factions in the towns of Kafr Jannah and Qatma, resulting in two deaths and more than 7 wounded, with the destruction of a camp and several military vehicles in the vicinity of the building.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights published that the death toll rose to three, including a fighter under the age of eighteen, and the injury of eight others. However, @SyriawatanNews put the casualties at six killed and 12 wounded among  “Suqur Al-Sham” members.

@Almohrar1 provided names of those injured and killed: Akram Derai, Ibrahim Muhammed Zureik, Abdel Hamid Zein El Din, Amin Hammadi Sattouf, Yusuf Masra Ibn Ibrahim, Mustafa Hamada Satouf, Elias Abdullah bin Ghalib, Bashar Al-Asi bin Samir, Ali Abras bin Muhammad, Khaled Hajj Musa Ibn Musa, Abdul Qasim bin Ahmed, Ubadah Hajj Darwish bin Abdul Qadir (Dead), Abdul Qahar Al-Asi bin Imad (Dead). Almglawy posted on Facebook that Suqur al-Sham Mujahideen member Youssef Ibrahim Al-Masrou was also killed.

@ly26935212 reported that the airstrikes caused outbreaks of fire in the area. All of the sources that reported on this incident attributed the strikes to Russian forces.

Airwars assessment

A 15 year old boy was injured by alleged Russian airstrikes on the village of Bzabor in Idlib on May 30, 2023.

Local sources from the countryside of Idlib governorate told Zaman Al Wasl that 15-year-old Muhammad Malik Ahmed Haj Musa was wounded by Russian airstrikes on Bzabor village. The Syrian Civil Defense (@SyriaCivilDefe) tweeted that a boy was injured by shrapnel from an airstrike which struck a home.

A tweet from @idleb_online referred to the site of the airstrike as belonging to a terrorist without providing any information on casualties while @ShaamNetwork tweets that the location is a “civilian house and agricultural land.”

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the victim was driving his motorbike by the home at the time of the airstrikes, and he was taken to the hospital for treatment for his injuries. A video posted by @anasanas84 allegedly taken by a Russian reconnaissance plane shows the motorcycle driving by a house at the exact time that an airstrike hit the building.

Abdul Karim, a volunteer with the White Helmets, described the home that was destroyed: “The family members who live in this house survived while they were working to harvest the mahaleb crop on their nearby farm, but they lost their memories of the haven that used to bring them together after the earthquake, and the walls that withstood that day, today they did not withstand the missiles, and the raids of the Russian warplanes destroyed it.”

Aljazeera (@ajmubasher) quoted the Syrian opposition air traffic tracking observatory as reporting that a Russian plane took off Tuesday at noon from Hmeimim base in Lattakia governorate and bombed the village of Bzabour in the Idlib countryside. North Press Agency identified high-explosive missiles as being used in the airstrikes. All other sources also attributed the airstrikes to Russia.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Two children were killed and at least four other civilians were injured, including up to three children and two women, in artillery shelling allegedly perpetrated by Syrian regime forces and/or Russian forces during the afternoon on August 26th, 2023 in Kansafra, Idlib. The two children were siblings and have been identified by the Syrian Civil Defense (@SyriaCivilDefe) as the children of Muhammad Mahmoud al-Mustafa. They were both buried that day.

Sources diverge on the gender of the children, with the Civil Defense stating they were brother and sister, while Syria News and Sky News claimed they were both boys. Along with the siblings, three other children were reported injured along with their mother and another unidentified woman. Syrian Civil Defense took the mother and at least one child to the hospital, before inspecting the neighborhood for further casualties. Syria TV, on information from the Civil Defense, alleged the injured child was a girl. Shaam News alleged those injured were related to the two children who were killed. Though numerous reports state five people were injured, there is some disparity: the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights believed four to have been wounded, with Sky News alleging six.

Though sources agree that the casualties were a result of artillery shelling, there is some disagreement regarding the perpetrator. Syrian Civil Defense stated its belief that the shelling was carried out by the Syrian regime and Russian forces, while Orient News alleged the regime along with Iranian militias bombed Kansafra.

Sky News alleged the casualties occurred during an exchange of missile and artillery shelling between the Syrian regime and insurgent group Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS).

The shelling affected residential areas, including schools. The Civil Defense specified that the schools were in use, with summer clubs and preparation courses for high school exams taking place.

The incident occured in the evening.

Airwars assessment

On October 6th, 2023 a missile strike, allegedly launched by Russian warplanes and/or Syrian regime artillery shelling, hit the rural town of Badama near the city Jisr al-Shughur, west of Idlib (during the day, according to photographic evidence shared on social media), resulting in the injury of 14 civilians, including four children and four women.

The strike affected especially the Al-Shakhaib farm, as reported by Syria TV. The Syrian Civil Defence (aka White Helmets), who provided assistance and rescue after the attack, reported on their Twitter account that 14 civilians had been injured, including 4 women and 4 children. One of these children is named “Muhammad”, and he was wounded in the head and left unconscious by the impact – described as “Muhammad does not know why they put gauze on his head and how he was injured. He sleeps from his fatigue and pain with his innocent face scratched by missile fragments, and the colors of blood mixed with the fabric of his nice clothes.”

According to @dulama_1, the strike also hit the house of a quadriplegic elderly man, portrayed lying on his bed with debris surrounding his room, in a photo circulating online.

While the majority of sources attributed the civilian casualties to Russian airstrikes, Ariha TV blamed artillery shelling from the Syrian regime checkpoints. Multiple sources, including @Ahmad_1alshble, mentioned that vacuum missiles were used in the attack.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

One civilian farmer was injured in an alleged Russian or Syrian thermal missile attack which destroyed his car on the morning of August 2nd, 2022 in Al Bara, a southern town of Idlib. No further reports of civilian harm have been reported.

The farmer was named by @abualisar18 and @g5VgKRPXfPQdfz9 as Ammar Mustafa Al-Qajji. He was watering the fig trees on his land when the missile struck his car. Syria TV reported that the White Helmets transferred him by ambulance to receive medical attention and secured the premises.

Airwars assessment

A child was killed when an unexploded cluster bomb originally launched by Syrian regime or Russian forces exploded in agricultural land on the outskirts of the city of Jisr Al Shughur on November 20, 2022.

The @SyriaCivilDefe reported that a child was killed when a cluster bomb from a previous bombing, attributed to the Syrian regime and Russia, exploded while the child was grazing sheep on the outskirts of the city of Jisr Al Shughur.

A local source told North Press that “the explosion resulted in the killing of the child, Muhammad Saleh al-Daghli, from the city of Jisr Al Shughur” and that many children were grazing their sheep in the same area.

@Almohrar1 added that the body of the child was transferred to the forensic medicine department in the city of Idlib, and then handed over to his family.

Sources were conflicted as to whether the bomb was from a previous Russian or Syrian regime bombardment.
