Airwars assessment

At least two civilians were reported killed and between four and six civilians were injured in alleged Russian airstrikes on Binin, Idlib, on August 20th.

@ShahbaPress tweeted that “two civilians [were] martyred and wounded due to an airstrike by Russian occupation aircraft on the village of Binin south of Idlib.”

Syria Civil Defense stated that “a child and a man were killed and four others were injured, including two women from the same family, as a result of a Russian airstrike on Tuesday, targeting the outskirts of the town of Binin”.

Similarly, @ShahbaPress reported that “a child and a young man were killed and two women and two men were injured in a new toll due to airstrikes on the town of Binin in the southern countryside of Idlib at dawn on Tuesday.”

Halab Today cited the death of two children and Anadolu Agency also reported two children were killed and six civilians were wounded.

Macro Media Center named the girl killed as Jana Abdul Latif Harami, and Justice Organisation named her brother, “a young man”, killed as Hussein Abdellatif Harami.

All other sources referred to “wounded civilians”, which, according to Edlib Media Center, included children. As understanding of events unfolded, cited figures for injury rose from one, to four to five from the same family.

A tweet from @la1mea referred to the area struck as “a farm containing displaced persons.” Anadolu Agency also pointed out that the strikes occurred in a residential neighborhood in the “de-escalation”zone.

An image posted by @zamanalwsl shows the damage to buildings from the airstrikes and a wounded man being carried by rescuers. A tweet from @jisrtv reported that “civilians were wounded and trapped under the rubble as a result of air strikes” and a tweet from @NEDAAPOST specified that two people were trapped under the rubble. A video posted by @NEDAAPOST shows White Helmets rescuing a teenage boy from the rubble.

According to a tweet from @abd9722, Russia used “high-explosive concussion missiles that have an earthquake impact on farms in Benin Forest.”

Almost all of the sources attributed the attack to Russian forces. However, @syr_television and @ZaitunAgency referred to “Assad’s airstrikes,” indicating that the regime was responsible, and Syrian Network for Human Rights blamed the Syrian regime for the airstrike.

The incident occured around dawn.

Airwars assessment

One or two civilians died and several more were wounded in an airstrike on Aleppo’s Al Qatana neighbourhood, according to local media. Most sources blamed Russia, though some reports said that the regime also carried out strikes in Aleppo during this period, meaning that its involvement can’t be definitively ruled out. Moreover, a number of sources didn’t identify the warplanes responsible for the casualties.

LCCSY, Syrian Press Center, @insrepTeam, @ALAMAWI, Jisrv and the Step News Agency blamed Russia, and put the death count at either one or two civilians.

According to Foucsaleppo on October 17th, “Russian and Syrian planes have stepped up raids in the eastern regions of Aleppo during the last two days to reach most of the besieged neighborhoods of Marjah, Al-Haidariyah, Al Qatana, Al-Qatraji, Al Maysar, Bab Al-Nairab, Sheikh Fares, Dhahra Awad and Karam Al Tarab. This resulted in more than 65 martyrs. Some of the wounded were left in a serious condition, meaning that the number of martyrs is likely to increase”.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Umyyapress provided the most detail, reporting: “a warplane – believed to be Russian – targeted the northern towns of Nabel and Zahra loyal to the Assad regime in the northern countryside of Aleppo, Sunday, which led to the deaths of a number of dead and wounded, according to sources loyal to the Assad regime.

“There were conflicting reports about the source of air raids that hit areas in the two towns, sources said that Russian airliner targeted at nine thirty in the night with a number of air raids, while other sources said that the flight is unidentified.

“According to pro pages, the two towns were targeted with four air and cluster air strikes, resulting in civilian casualties. According to these pages, Zahra Hospital announced the need for blood units from all factions, calling for the need to donate blood.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights noted that “Al-Zahra town is home to thousands of pro-regime militants who were trained by field commanders in the Lebanese Hezbollah”. The Observatory also pointed to Russian strikes on the town – reporting that Russia had struck it “by mistake”.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
