Airwars assessment

On Friday, October 20th 2023, 15 civilians from three generations of the same family were killed and others were reportedly injured when an alleged Israeli airstrike hit the Abu Sharia family house in the Al Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City. The incident also caused “massive destruction” to the area according to a report by Wattan news agency.

New agencies such as Al Jazeera, Shehab Agency, Al Wattan and Safa News reported the alleged Israeli air strike on the house. All of these sources reported that the incident was caused by Israeli Military aircraft. Al Arabiya Palestine also posted a video of the bombing on Facebook and Al Jazeera posted a video of its aftermath on Facebook, with civilians moving around the rubble and fires still burning. According to a post from Alkataweta Family Boys Gathering, the home belonged to the late Hajj Abdul Karim Abu Sharia “Abu Tafesh”.

A post on a Qatatawa family Facebook page originally reported that seven people had been killed and that rescue crews were still searching in the rubble for other family members. Another source, Ramzi Alhasayna, later reported in a post on Facebook that 13 people had been killed and that crews continued to search for more victims. Multiple sources described victims having been buried under rubble. Altogether, Airwars identified 15 names of victims that were reported as killed in this incident.

The official Qatatawa Youth League Facebook page posted the names of the family members killed, including pictures of some of the family members killed. 56 year old Ahmed Abdul Karim Abu Sharia (also known as Abu Aram or Abu Nidal) was killed alongside his brother, 48 year old Jamil Abdul Karim Abu Sharia (also known as Abu Khaldoun), and Jamil’s adult sons, 26 year old Khaldoun Jamil Abu Sharia and Malik Jamil Abu Sharia and his young daughter 13 year old Raneen Jamil Abu Sharia. A male family member called Ibrahim Muhammad Abdel Karim Abu Sharia, 25 years old, was also killed.

Three female family members called 54 year old Maryam Attia Abu Sharia, Nisreen Suleiman Al-Hasayna and 28 year old Manar Muhammad Shehada Abu Sharia were killed. Sources did not clarify how they were related to other family members. Another two female family members called Maryam Ibrahim Abdel Aziz Abu Sharia and Noura Abdel Aziz Abu Sharia were killed. One source, Fayek Abu Aker, posted an image on Facebook of Ahmed and Jamil, with text overlaid, reporting that they had died alongside their wives and various family members. Therefore, it is possible that their wives are amongst the victims listed above, however this cannot be confirmed.

Four grandchildren of the family were reportedly killed; a set of young brothers, two year old Omar Bashir Abdul Karim Abu Sharia and Ahmed Bashir Abdul Karim Abu Sharia as well as two sisters, Dana Muhammad Ibrahim Attia Abu Sharia and two year old Basma Muhammad Ibrahim Attia Abu Sharia.

Family members and friends, in multiple Facebook and Twitter/X posts, lamented the deaths of the family members, made heartfelt tributes and posted pictures of them from before the incident. The Abu Sharia family comes from the Qatatawa tribe and some of the tribute appeared on Facebook groups of clan members. The related Abu Akar or Al-Akour tribe also expressed their condolences in a post on their Facebook page. Mohammed Al-Rawaak Abu Shehab described Jamil Abu Sharia as a brother, friend and companion and posted a photo in which Jamil had his arm around him and they were smiling. A video posted on Facebook by Abu Mehdi Abu Sehlol showed Jamil smiling while he sat eating at an event with dancing lights around him. A post on an Abu Sharia family Facebook page showed pictures of Ahmed, Jamil, Khaldoun, Malik and Ibrahim while they were alive as well as another picture of two small smiling children, possibly Omar and Ahmed. A picture of Ibrahim posted on Facebook by Jarad Mohammed showed him standing in a field and laughing.

Multiple sources reported that “injuries” had resulted from the strike but did not provide a toll.

A family member called Ramzi Alhasayna reported in a post about the incident on Facebook that the Al-Hasayna Abu Sharia family had refused to leave their home and that crews continued to search for family members under the rubble. Another source, Abo Abdullah, reported in a post on Facebook that the incident had taken place without prior warning.

Where possible, the names of the victims identified in the sources have been reconciled with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities published on October 26, 2023.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli Forces.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

On Sunday, October 22nd 2023, a number of civilians were reportedly injured and killed, including a 24-year-old civilian named Salama Muhammad al-Owaidat, when an alleged Israeli airstrike hit the Abu Helou house located at Al-Awadhi junction of Block 7 in the Bureij Camp in the Gaza Strip. The precise number of victims remains unknown, and only one victim has been identified.

Facebook user Muhammad Abd mourned the death of his friend on social media. The comment read, “The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves over your departure, O Salama. God is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs. May God accept you in the world. The martyr Salama Muhammad Al-Owaidat.” In a photo, shared alongside the comment, Salama Muhammad Al-Owaidat is depicted in a light blue blazer, shirt and jeans smiling warmly toward the camera.

Several news outlets and journalists, including Shehab Agency and East Now, reported that there were injured and a number killed due to the aircraft bombing at the Al-Awadhi junction in Al-Bureij Camp. However, there is no further detail on the additional victims killed or on the number of wounded.

Shortly after the incident appeals were made by social media users and journalists for ambulances to go to Al-Bureij camp. Facebook user Read Sharab, quoting a Quds News correspondent, posted that “appeals for ambulances to go to Block 7 in Bureij camp” were being made.

Where possible, names have been reconciled with published Palestinian Ministry of Health lists. With thanks to journalist Alexandre Horn from CheckNews for identifying relevant sources, and Data Tech for Palestine for centralising the datasets.

Where the sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

Location

المجزرة الإسرائيلية بمنطقة الالباني و محيط منطقة الترنس وسط مخيم جباليا  شمال قطاع غزة,, Al-Ternis area and Al-Albani Mosque in the middle of the Jabalia camp, Jabalia, the Gaza Strip

Airwars assessment

On the 22nd of October, 2023, at least 24 civilians, including a number of women and children, were killed, and at least 27 others, including at least four children, were injured when an alleged Israeli bombardment hit two houses: that of the Qadous family and that of the Abu Saada family in the Al-Ternis area in the middle of the Jabalia refugee camp, north of the Gaza Strip. Victims included 20 members of the Qadous family across three generations and at least four members of the Al-Derin Family.

The patriarch of the Qadous family, Omar Hashem Qadous was killed with his wife, Ikram Qadous, and several of their children. A son, Muhammad Omar Qadous, was killed, as were three daughters: Amal Omar Qadous, 36-year old Tahani Omar Qadous al-Ajrami, and 40-year old Hanan Omar Qadous Haboub.

Muhammad’s wife, Maysaa Qadous Shalayil, was also killed, as were their two sons, 8-year old Fouad Muhammad Qadous and Abdul Hakim Muhammad Qadous.

Hanan was killed with her two sons: 13-year old Samer Rabie Haboub and 10-year old Abdullah Rabie Haboub.

Amal’s daughter, three-year old Malak Ismail Haboub, was also killed.

Tahani’s 15-year old son, Sarah al-Ajrami, was killed with her.

Another family member, Ahmed Qadous, was killed, as were several of Omar and Ikram’s grandchildren: 20-year old Abdullah al-Zinati was killed, as were grandsons Muhammad and Hassan. Marya, Tayma, and Dina, their three granddaughters, were killed as well.

Along with members of the Qadous family, civilians from the al-Derini family were also killed. Um Nidal al-Derini was killed, as was her daughter-in-law Hala Kassab al-Derini, and granddaughter, one-year old Nour Ahmed al-Derini. Another family member, Yazan Nidal al-Derini was also killed.

Lower initial death tolls were reported in the immediate aftermath of the strike. Photos shared on social media depict ambulance and civil defence crews on-site rushing the dead and the wounded to the Indonesian Hospital for treatment. A young boy can be seen crying while receiving medical attention, and multiple other images showcase children in tears. Another image shows a confused-looking man gesturing while a doctor tends to a wound on his head. A very graphic photograph shared by Facebook user Medhat Muhammad shows a medic carrying a young girl into hospital; limp in his arms, her face and hair are completely bloodied. Images of the deceased were also included in the post: one shows the same girl laying on a bed next to a young boy, whose right arm had been severed. Another image, shared by user “Meet Basmala Muhammad”, showed a young boy who had lost both his legs in the strike.

Confusion on the ground led to initial disparity in casualty figures. Shehab Agency and Al-Rased News initially reported 11 deaths and 27 injuries. East Now later reported at least 18 deaths and dozens of injuries. Friends and family on Social Media subsequently identified dead loved ones, bringing the casualties to at least 24. Facebook user Mahammad al-Madhoud reported a total of 30 deaths but this has not yet been verified elsewhere.

Friends and family wrote heartfelt messages to their loved ones on social media. Facebook user “Alaa or Moaz” praised Maysaa Shalayil for her work memorising the Quran, and expressed hope that she and her family would be honoured by God “with the highest paradise.”

Ezzedine Zaquote shared a photo of Ahmed Qadous, smiling at the camera in a white polo and wrote: “Good luck, my dear. This is how you followed your friend, Muhammad Arouq. God willing, you will be happy together in Paradise, my love. May God bless you. I hope you will be with me, my eyes. Martyr Ahmed Qadous.”

Facebook user Israa shared a video of a man on his knees weeping as he rocked a young baby in his arms. The child, identified as Nour al-Darini, can be seen with dust from the strike and blood clearly visible on her head. A post from Facebook user Kareem El-Meligy identified Nour as one year old. She had been born, the post alleged, on October 23rd, 2022, making her exactly a year old at her time of death.

Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.

Airwars assessment

Up to seven civilians were killed, including two children, and as many as 34 people were injured, when an alleged rocket fired by a Palestinian armed group landed in Saleh Dardouna Street, near the al-Omari Mosque in Jabalia, north Gaza on May 10th 2021, according to multiple sources.

An investigation by Human Rights Watch revealed that seven civilians had been killed. The victims were named as: Bara al-Gharabli, 6; Mustafa Mohammad Obied, 14; Mousa Khamees Junied al-Zain, 20; Raed Abu Warda, 33; Nabeel Noman Dardona, 24; Ismat al-Zain, 50; and Basheer Aloush, 54. Fifteen people were said to have been injured, including five children. A shopkeeper who witnessed the strike identified one of the injured children as Mohammed Shaban.

In a report published on May 11th 2021, Defence for Children International – Palestine, said eight civilians had been killed and as many as 34 injured, 10 of them children. Mustafa Mohammad Mahmoud Obaid, 16, was killed in the blast, and five-year-old Baraa Wisam Ahmad al-Gharabli succumbed to his injuries around 11 p.m. on May 10.

Another man, Zakaria Ziad Alloush, was also reported to have been killed. Tributes were paid online by relatives who identified Basheer and Zakaria Alloush as uncle and nephew respectively.

Four people, who were on the street at the time, said they saw a rocket rise into the sky above them and then fall to the street. Two adults said they saw the rocket approach from the northwest. Human Rights Watch spoke to a relative of one of the deceased who was at the scene. He gave the following account: “At about 6 p.m. I was standing near the entrance to the local market on Martyr Salah Dardona Street. I was near about 50 people who were close together in the street. Some of them were there to get food for poor people, cooked by locals wanting to help the poor during Ramadan. Suddenly, I heard a barrage of rockets being fired and I looked up and saw them rise in the air. I saw one rocket rising in the shape of a spiral and then it came down in the middle of the street about 10 meters from where I was standing.” The relative said that among those killed and injured were a father and a child washing a car, a man riding a motorbike, a child coming to get a plate of food, a woman exiting a hairdresser’s shop, and a child playing in front of a bicycle shop. The relative later spoke to a person who told him that six rockets had been launched from the Sheikh Radwan area of Jabalya.

The wife of one of those killed gave the following account: “[My husband] had just come home from work. He had bought sweets and new clothes for everyone, in preparation for Eid [Muslim holiday marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan]. Before he left, he gave the kids some sweets and kissed and hugged them. Then he asked me to look after the kids, as he wanted to buy one more thing. He told me he wouldn’t be delayed, as he was feeling tired. But he never came back.”

Some sources, including accounts from relatives of the victims, reported that Israeli forces were responsible for the strike. Human Rights Watch determined, based on witness accounts during site visits, munition remnants, and a review of video footage, that the casualties had been caused by a Palestinian rocket. Defence for Children International – Palestine came to the same conclusion citing Palestinian security sources and explosives experts.

The website NGO Monitor reported that one of the deceased, Issmat Shaaban Al-Zain had been a member of the Izz Ad-din Al-Qassam brigades. Al Qassam verified that he was a member, posting in their Telegram channel “The martyr Al-Qassami Mujahid / Ismat Sha`aban Al-Zein from Jabalia Al-Balad, who was martyred during the battle of #Saif_Al-Quds”. The Israeli Defense Force also identified Raed Abu Warda as “a Hamas terrorist operative [who] was killed in a failed jihadist launch” but Raed’s name was not posted in the official Al Qassam Telegram channel.

The strike occurred at 18:00 local time.

The incident occured at approximately 6:00 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

Between eight to nine civilians, including four children and two women, were killed and 33 others, including eight women and 10 children, were injured in alleged Israeli strikes on the Sheikh Zayed area of Beit Lahia on May 13, 2021.

Al Mezan reported that at 1:10am on 13 May 2021, the Israeli air forces fired 20 missiles at eight residential buildings on the main street in the middle of Beit Lahia City. Abdulrahim Mohammed Abdullah Al-Madhoun, 63, and his wife Halima Ali Mohammed Abu Sharakh (Al-Madhoun), 66 were both killed in the attack. In addition, thirty-three persons were injured, including eight women and ten children. At the time of reporting a number of people’s remains were thought to be under the rubble.

A Facebook post, by the Gaza Women’s Forum, reported that Dr. Taher Abdul Rahim Al-Madhoun was in intensive care after being pulled from the rubble. His mother and father, Abdulrahim and Halima, were both killed in the strike.

Hamza Abu Eltarabesh, Taher’s friend, wrote that Taher had recently started a job at the intensive care unit of the Indonesian Hospital, his sister and two brothers were studying medicine at Ain Shams University in Egypt. Hamza wrote: “A cousin of mine, Muhammad, who lives in the area [of the strikes], told me people could be heard screaming under the rubble of some of the targeted houses. Nine relatives who would normally have been there [with the Al Madhoun family] were spared, having spent the evening at a brother’s house.” Taher had been unable to open his eyes for two days. Upon his recovery, he told Hamza that his parents had rushed to his side when the strikes started and that he had watched them take their last breaths.

B’Tselem provided testimony from Taher al-Madhun, 28, whose father and his first wife were killed in the incident: “On 13 May 2021, at around 11:30 P.M., I was sitting in my room. My mother and my sister Maryam were at my sister Hanin’s. She’s also a doctor, and she was due to give birth. About an hour later, I heard people shouting outside and unusual movement on the street. I went to the window overlooking the main street of Beit Lahiya from the south, and saw men, women and children running along the street. Some of them were carrying clothes, and it looked like they were running from home. I went and woke my father up right away. I was about to go outside to see if we needed to evacuate, too. As soon as I opened the door, there was a strong blast and the stairs crashed. I went back inside immediately. My father and his wife Halimah were standing behind me. We were trapped in the apartment. I thought the bombing had ended, but a few minutes later, another missile landed on the house. The concrete and the walls fell on top of us. We recited the Shahadatain prayer. The door fell on me and shielded me from the debris and the concrete. My father and his wife were next to me, completely covered in rubble. At first, I could hear my father’s voice, but after two minutes, he fell silent. His wife Halimah told me he had been killed. I managed to call my cousin, and he called the Civil Defense and told them our house had been bombed. They arrived about half an hour later. I heard them ask if anyone was alive. I answered yes and that we were having a hard time breathing because of the rubble, smoke and dust. It took an hour until they managed to pass an oxygen tube to me, which helped me breathe, and another three hours before they managed to get me out. They took me to the Indonesian Hospital, where I had tests and X-rays. It turned out I had four fractured ribs, a tear in the right lung, and hemorrhaging in the lung membrane. I also had contusions, bruises and scratches all over my body. The tests showed I had torn muscles, too. I was in the ICU for a week….I was supposed to get married after ‘Eid al-Fitr. I had already fixed up the apartment. I worked every day with my father to get it ready and prepare for the wedding. Now, I’ve now canceled the marriage ceremony…We lost everything. The apartment I built cost 20,000 USD. The value of the rest of the apartments that were destroyed comes to about 150,000 USD.”

@andlusy reported that prior to the strikes, Abdul Rahim and his wife Halima were celebrating Eid together and had just laid out their laundry on the roof.

In the same series of strikes, Raafat Al-Tanani, his four-month pregnant wife and their four children were killed in their home located in the vicinity of Sheikh Zayed Towers, east of Beit Lahia. Anadolu Agency reported that their dream was to buy a house.

The body of an unidentified girl was also recovered from the rubble. At the time of reporting, rescuers were searching for four possible victims thought to still be under the rubble.

A Facebook post, by the Association of the Sons of the Beit Lahia, provided the name of Raafat’s wife, Rawiya Fathi Hassan Al-Tanani, and their children, Ismail, Adham, Amir, and Mohammed. @saedswerky_RT provided the ages of those killed: Raafat Muhammad Ismail Atta Al-Tanani (39), Rawya Fathi Hassan Al-Tanani (35), Ismail Raafat Muhammad Al-Tanani (7), Adham Raafat Muhammad Al-Tanani (6), Amir Raafat Muhammad Al-Tanani (5), Muhammad Raafat Muhammad Al-Tanani (4).

According to @WeAreNotNumbers, Rafaat Al Tanani had worked hard at a series of part-time jobs in order to support his family, despite his struggles he was optimistic for the future. His last words to one of his relatives were “things are going to be okay so soon”.

B’Tselem also provided testimony from Hatem a-Tanani, 30, father of two who lost his brother, sister-in-law and four nephews in the incident: On Thursday, I was visiting friends at Jabalya Refugee Camp. A friend of my brother Raafat’s called me a little before midnight and asked me to call Raafat. There were bombings all over the Gaza Strip at the time, and he was worried something might have happened to him. I called my brother right away. Raafat answered, and I heard him shouting, “Help!” I got up and ran towards his house. I kept talking to him as I was running. I told him: “Don’t worry, I’ll be there in seconds.” He said, “Help!” again. Halfway there, I heard a several very strong blasts. The call with Raafat got cut off. I tried calling him again, but he didn’t answer. I got to a-Ribat Mosque, which is 500 meters away from Raafat’s home. There was dust everywhere. I took my shirt off and wrapped it around my face so I could go on. When I came close, I saw his building was nothing but rubble and stones. I went towards it. People were running away from there, and I passed by them. I stood on the rubble and couldn’t recognize my brother’s building, because everything was in ruins. I heard voices below me. Then, some paramedics and Civil Defense people came. Everyone who was there tried to help, and we all tried to find survivors under the rubble. I started looking. We found the al-Malfuh family. There were six of them. We got them out, and they were okay. I heard another voice. I felt relieved because I thought it might be Raafat and his sons. It turned out to be the al-Madhun family. There were two martyrs there. At 3:30 A.M., we stopped searching and walked about ten meters away from there. I spoke to the Civil Defense people and told them my brother, his wife and their sons were still under the rubble. I started looking for them in the fields near the house, but I couldn’t find anyone. I went to three hospitals in the area. I thought I might find my brother and his family there, but they weren’t there either. I talked to my parents and told them everything was okay, that Raafat was next to me and that he was okay. At around 5:00 A.M., I went to my sister Asmaa’s (36). Her house is close to Raafat’s. When she saw me, she hardly recognized me, I was exhausted and covered in dust and dirt. I didn’t tell her Raafat had been killed, but just told her to pray for him and for his family. In the morning, I went back to the wreckage of Raafat’s house and looked for them everywhere, but to no avail. I went home to my parents. I still didn’t tell them we couldn’t find Raafat and his family. We had breakfast, and then I went to Raafat’s house again and met some relatives there. I was physically and mentally exhausted. I sat down far from the house and called the Civil Defense. They came with special equipment for locating bodies and started working. I was there with friends and neighbors, and we looked for the bodies.

We were there all day, and we didn’t find the bodies until the middle of the night. They took out the body of my nephew Amir. I picked him up and put him in the ambulance. Then we pulled out Muhammad, then Isma’il, and in the end, Adham. When we found them, Raafat had his arms around Isma’il and Amir, and his wife Rawyah had her arms around Muhammad and Adham. Then we took out Rawyah’s body. It was dismembered. I got a tarp, and we got her out. She was three months pregnant. I carried her to the ambulance. Finally, we got Raafat out. His body was removed in two stages, because it was also in pieces. Everyone was taken to the Indonesian Hospital. The next day, I went to the hospital with my father. The medical team there prepared the bodies of Raafat and his family. I wanted to help them. I took the pieces of Raafat’s body and wrapped him up. I did the same with the little kids. My father gathered Rawyah’s body parts and wrapped her. I held the pieces of the martyrs’ bodies and recited, “Allah Akbar”. We put the wrapped bodies in an ambulance and drove home. I laid the bodies of Rawyah and the children in front of my mother and sisters, but I couldn’t place Raafat’s body in front of them. I left him in the ambulance. I took my mother to say goodbye to him. She screamed and cried. Her state was indescribable. In those moments, I stayed strong so my family wouldn’t fall apart, especially my father and mother. I went to the cemetery. The family stayed home. I put Muhammad’s body next to his mother, and Adham’s next to his father, and Isma’il and Amir together. I went home shrouded in sadness. I was hoping I would cry, but I couldn’t. We lost a whole family that did nothing. The Israeli army bombed them, and they turned into dismembered bodies.”

Khaled Al-Malbouh, who lived in the same building as both the Al-Tanani family and the Al-Madhoun family, told Teller Report how two large pieces of concrete had formed a dome over her six family members, preventing debris from falling on them.  Khaled, 25, had just gone to the balcony to fetch his clothes when the strikes occurred. He told Al-Jazeera Net: “Without thinking I threw myself at my mother and hugged her to protect her, my sister and her children were next to us, we all sat in the corner of a room. When the rockets were falling profusely my mother said – and her arms were barely expanding for all of us – “Let us die with some of the best.”

Shortly after the strike, ambulance and civil defense crews rescued the Al-Malbouh family. Khaled was injured in the back, not seriously, his mother [Umm Khaled Al-Malbouh] suffered fractures to her legs, his sister Alaa and her children Muhammad (3 years) and Zina (2 years) were also injured. They were admitted to the Indonesian Hospital for treatment.

Khaled told Teller Report that just before the strikes: “I met my neighbor Raafat [killed in the strikes] who was afraid of the “frenzied Israeli targeting” of residential homes. He was reassured and we parted, and I did not know that he smelled death and breathed his last breath in life.”

Rabah al-Madhoun, the owner of the building that the al-Madhoun and Al Tanani families lived in, told The National that there had been no time to evacuate. “My neighbour received a call telling him that the building would be targeted,” Mr. Al Madhoun said. “He came to warn us but the air strikes started immediately – people didn’t have time to evacuate.”

Mr. Al Madhoun told AI Monitor: “I buried my cousins [Abdul Rahim and his wife Halima], and I am now searching for the other bodies under the rubble.” According to @mariamelrass, it took 17 hours for rescue crews to exhume the bodies of the Al-Tanani family. The funeral of the Al-Tanani family took place on Friday morning at the Al-Qassam Mosque in the Beit Lahia, the day after they were removed from the rubble. Al Jazeera reported that at the funeral the grandfather looked down at his grandchildren and said: “Who will go to school and answer his books and notebooks?”

Hatem Al-Tanani, the brother of Raafat, who was killed in the strikes, told Anadolu Agency: “My brother’s house was directly targeted, with a number of missiles, and without warning.” He added that during the strike he was on the phone with his brother, whose final words had been: “Hurry me, brother, catch me, brother.”

Damage from the strike resulted in the complete destruction of nine buildings, including; residential units, commercial shops, corporate offices, the offices of Faten – Palestine for Credit and Development, the offices of a legal practice and an educational center. The attack also caused damage to road networks and infrastructure, including electricity and communication, water and sanitation. A significant number of adjacent houses also sustained damage, including substantial damage to six residential buildings.

A tweet by @hstons2 included a list of families whose homes were affected by the strikes (Al-Sharafi, Al-Azraq, Al-Zara’a, Al-Madhoun, Abu Safiya, Felfel, Al-Maflouh) and the headquarters of Palestine University.

Maan News quoted an aunt of the Al-Tanani family as saying: “Airplanes bombed insanely, the bombing is very intense”. According to the relative, the family had wanted to flee but weren’t able to.

CBS News reported that Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman, said the operation involved tank fire and airstrikes. The aim of the strikes had been to destroy a tunnel network beneath Gaza City, refers to as “the Metro”, used by militants to evade surveillance and airstrikes. “As always, the aim is to strike military targets and to minimize collateral damage and civilian casualties,” he said. “Unlike our very elaborate efforts to clear civilian areas before we strike high-rise or large buildings inside Gaza, that wasn’t feasible this time.”

B’Tselem reported that “A Hamas military operative lives in a nearby building. He was not home at the time. It is not known whether that was the reason for the strike on the building.”
