Airwars assessment

Between four and nine civilians were killed and at least 20 others were injured in airstrikes against the town of Al Mansoura in the western countryside of Aleppo.

The majority of local sources, including @ShahbaPress, allege that Russian warplanes were responsible for the airstrikes launched against Al Mansoura. However, SDC Aleppo offered a conflicting report and stated that the regime carried out the airstrikes.

According to multiple local sources, including Step News Agency, the airstrikes struck the Jawid printing plant, which resulted in the outbreak of flames and the death of at least four workers.

Videos posted by SDC Aleppo and Thiqa News show flames encircling the town of Al Mansoura.

Photographs posted by @mohmmad_hk depict firefighters putting out the flames from the fire.

Between two and five civilians, including two children, were killed and at least 10 other civilians were injured in four airstrikes launched against the town of Tarminin in the northern countryside of Idlib. Both those that were killed and injured included patients and members of the medical staff at the hospital.

According to multiple sources, including Enad Baladi and Step News Agency, the airstrikes struck an obstetrics and children’s hospital, which resulted in physical damage to the building and suspension of service to patients.

The airstrikes also struck a nearby residential area, causing damage to civilian homes. Both Russian and regime officials have claimed that they have not struck medical facilities with airstrikes.

The majority of local sources, including Syrian Network for Human Rights and Idlib Media Center, allege that Russian planes were responsible for the airstrikes. However, SPC identified that both Russian and regime airstrikes were carried out against the town of Tarminin.

Between 12 and 50 civilians including women and children died and as many as dozens more were wounded in an airstrike on Taqad, Aleppo, according to sources on the ground. Multiple reports said that a mosque was struck and other civilian property damaged. The majority of sources attributed the event to Moscow, though there was one allegation against the Assad regime.

The Violations Documentation Center named 12 people as killed, including four children and four women. There were multiple victims from several families.

According to Alarabiya: “activists reported a horrific massacre in the town of Taqad in Aleppo as a result of being targeted by Russian aviation.” This source gave the highest death count of “about 50 worshippers”.

Most other reports, however, said between five and 14 people died.

SPM reported that “Russian planes committed a new massacre in which seven civilians, including five children, a woman and a man were killed during a rocket-propelled grenade attack on a perimeter of a mosque in the town of Takad during Friday prayers.”

Step News Agency said that the death toll had risen to 14 including four women and six children.

One source, HNN, pointed to the regime, claiming that “land to lad missiles injured several people and caused material damage” – though it made no mention of any fatalities.

Up to three civilians including two children were killed and as many as 15 more were wounded following airstrikes targeting Douma, Damascus, local media reported. Sources were unclear whether Russia or the Assad regime was responsible.

Most sources reported that the incident led to the death of three civilians, with several reports saying that two children were among the victims. One girl was identified  by several sources.

The strikes were reportedly part of a wider shelling of the countryside of Damascus. According to Al-Jazeera, there were “two dead and dozens more wounded in an  aerial and artillery bombardment by the Syrian regime which targeted the cities and towns of Duma and Kafr Batna and Harsta in the countryside of Damascus.”

@revo_spring reported no less than 15 airstrikes had been carried out that day in the city of Douma. One source, DW, indicated that the city was also struck with artillery by Assad’s forces.

Between four and seven civilians were killed and up to seven others were wounded, including women and children, in alleged Russian airstrikes against Hatla village in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that at the time of reporting, many civilians were in critical condition and the death toll was expected to rise from the four killed that was at that time reported.

According to the correspondent from D24 News, Russian planes “directly targeted the houses of civilians in the town, killing six civilians, three of them unidentified and wounding several others.” Other sources, including Step News Agency and Euphrate Pos, corroborated that report and and also attributed the airstrikes to Russian planes.

The Furat Post noted that extensive destruction of residential buildings resulted from the airstrikes. Images posted by the Euphrates Pos show the structural damage and collapse of the homes.

One named civilian man was reportedly killed and several more were wounded by airstrikes targeting the al-Mowasalat neighbourhood of Aleppo, local sources reported. While most sources blamed Russia for the civilian harm, there was also an allegations against the Assad regime.

The incident was reportedly part of a wider shelling of neighbourhoods in Aleppo that day. @Syriamubasher tweeted: “One person was killed and others wounded in a bombardment by a warplane which fired a missile on the neighborhood of the Al Mouasalat, Aleppo”.

Three sources, @ShahpaPress, Smart News, VDC, pointed to Russia as the culprit, while only one, Orient News, blamed Assad. A number of other sources didn’t identify the culprit.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Russia has not reported any specific strikes between November 1st – 30th 2016.

On 6 January 2017, Russia, however, reported: “Since November 8, 2016, the aircraft carrier group of the Northern Fleet consisting of the heavy aircraft carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov, the heavy nuclear missile cruiser Pyotr Velikiy, the large ASW ship Severomorsk, as well as auxiliary vessels of the Black Sea Fleet, has been fulfilling counterterrorist missions on the territory of Syria”, adding that ”in the course of two months of their participation in the combat actions, naval aviation pilots have carried out 420 combat sorties, 117 of them were night ones.”

Additionally, Russia reported that its air forces have carried out strikes in Aleppo during November and December 2016.
