Airwars assessment

At least one civilian, a  woman, was reported killed and between three and four civilians, including three children and a woman, sustained injuries during alleged Russian or Regime airstrike or artillery shelling on civilian homes in the Town of Hayyan in the northern countryside of Aleppo on February 6, 2020. Anadolu Agency noted that Hayyan was situated in one of the ‘de-escalation’ areas. Multiple sources also mentioned that vacuum missiles were used during the attack.

Regarding civilian harm, multiple sources, including Zakria Zelo, claimed that a woman, identified as Fatoum Ateeq, the wife of Hamdo Qanti, died and three children and a woman sustained injuries as a result of bombing with vacuum missiles on the town of Hayyan. Idlib Plus and the SCD Aleppo reported that a woman was killed and three children were wounded. According to a tweet from Amer4news, the three injured children and the deceased woman belonged to the same family. Baladi Network and SOHEB2019 were the only sources that claimed multiple civilian deaths.

Fresh Syria stated that the Assad Regime forces and their Russian ally were pursuing a scorched-earth policy by means of heavy artillery shellings and airstrikes on the Idlib and Aleppo governorates, including Hayyan, resulting in the forced displacement of the civilians living there.

Sources were conflicted as to who was responsible for the strike with the Syrian network for Human Rights attributing the attack to Syrian Regime forces, while Al Bawaba News referred to Russia as having carried out airstrikes with vacuum missiles on Hayyan. Shaam News Networked said that both Russia and the Syrian Regime were responsible for the attack on Hayyan, however they consolidated the incident into a larger report of strikes across various cities and towns.

According to SCD Aleppo, the incident took place in the afternoon.

Airwars assessment

On June 9, 2020, alleged Russian air strikes on Baylon resulted in the deaths of two civilians, including a woman, with multiple sources stating that between four and eight civilians were injured, including several children between the ages of 4-14.

Abdullah Ahmad al-Dani was reportedly killed by a strike on his home on June 9, and a woman, which one source states was Amenah al-Dani, his wife, died several days later from injuries sustained during the strikes. Abdullah was from the nearby village of Kansafra, according to multiple sources, including one that stated that he and Amenah were previously displaced. The UN stated that at least three civilian homes were destroyed in the raid, including that of Abdullah and Amenah. The same source notes that five others were injured in the same home, including two girls and one boy, ages ranging 4-14.

Syrian Civil Defense reported that a civilian was killed and eight others, including five children and a woman were injured in Russian airstrikes that targeted Baylon with three raids when civilians were getting ready to flee. On June 12th, the Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that Amenah Dani from Kansafra village died of her injuries on June 12th, 2020.

Multiple sources note that the strike on Baylon struck residential areas, and took place in conjunction with other strikes by Russian and regime forces in the area, which sources state is in violation of a March 2020 ceasefire agreement. Though all the sources blamed Russian forces, @SyriaCivilDefense said the civilian casualties are a result of Russian airstrikes and artillery and missile shelling of the regime forces on different areas in Idlib and Hama. The UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria in their report of September 15th, 2020 blamed the pro-regime forces for undertaking the attack without specifying which category of pro-regime forces.

The incident occured around dawn.

One civilian was reportedly killed, and three others, including one elderly woman, were injured as a result of alleged Russian or Iranian airstrikes or explosion of a suicide drone in the village of Nahlia, in the vicinity of the town of Ariha, south of Idlib on the afternoon of October 31st, 2020 according to Local sources.

One source only (@atif781Osman) mentioned the killing of “at least one civilian” due to airstrikes by a drone on a workshop while workers “were picking olives in the agricultural lands of the village of Nahlia”. No other source mentioned any detail on the number of civilians that were reported killed. However, all of the sources claimed that civilians were injured in this incident. The majority of the sources including Syrian Civil defense reported that three civilians, including an elderly woman, were wounded and added that “the civil defense teams responded to the incident and worked to aid the wounded and secure the place”. Step News agency claimed that the three civilians were “seriously injured”. On the other hand, some other sources such as Syrian journalists Mohamed Al-Daher (@Mohamed2Aldaher) and Ibrahim Yasouf (@ibraheem890) claimed that one woman and one man were injured.

Some sources including Syrian civil defense and Syrian Observatory of Human Rights mentioned that the attack was on people harvesting olives in the village of Nahlia. Other local sources (@SRoudinah2, @muhammadamory1) reported that a car in the village of Nahlia was attacked. Nevertheless, according to Enab Baladi News the commander of the Ariha sector in the Civil Defense, Walid Aslan, said that “civilians working in the olive fields in the vicinity of the village of Nahlia, were targeted by suicide drones. One of them exploded near a car belonging to civilians, injuring three people, including an elderly woman who sustained a head injury”.

Sham News and a tweet by (@SRoudinah2) pointed out the use of new weapons in the attack. Some of the sources including Step News Agency and Halab Today TV mentioned that there were airstrikes specifically from a drone, while others including Al-Jisr News agency and Idlib TV reported that there was an explosion of the suicide drone. However, One source on twitter called Resala post (@resalapost) claimed that the drone actually crashed to the ground.

The majority of the sources who named the belligerent in their reporting on the incident blamed Russian forces for the attack. However, few local sources including the journalist Mohamed Al-Daher (@Mohamed2Aldaher) and the activist Hafez Taraman (@hafeztaraman) claimed that the suicide drone that attacked the civilians was Iranian.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
