Airwars assessment

A confirmed Coalition strike with high-explosive missiles against Al Qaeda at Rif Al Mouhandessen near Aleppo on the afternoon of June 30th is also locally reported to have injured at least two children and two women, and killed a number of foreign AQ-linked fighters. Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that the strike was carried out at 4.20 pm, exactly.

According to Step news, a total of seven injured people were evacuated including the two children and two women, in addition to the bodies of three men. Step News added in a later post that the number of casualties had risen to eleven people but did specify the number of dead or wounded or their combatant status.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights initially reported that eight commanders and fighters were killed but in a later post added that the number had risen to nine. According the source, the victims included two Algerians, two Tunisians, one Egyptian and a Syrian commander in addition to 14 wounded who attended a meeting when the building they were in was struck with rocket shelling. The source added that it wasn’t clear whether the shelling was carried out by the International Coalition or by Russian missiles.

Alarabiya reported: “The US-led coalition said Monday its jets carried out strikes in northwest Syria a day earlier that a monitor reported had killed eight extremists, including commanders, from an al-Qaeda-linked group.

‘This operation targeted AQ-S operatives responsible for plotting external attacks threatening US citizens, our partners, and innocent civilians,’ US Central Command said in a statement, using an acronym for Al-Qaeda in Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, earlier said six commanders were among the slain extremists from the Hurras al-Deen group.”

Among those killed militants were Abu Omar, Tunisian, and Abu Dujana, Algerian, leaders of the organization according to Mena Monitor. @jalaysalshuhada reported that Abu Omar was a Tunisian member of the Shura Council and a judge in the internal judiciary of the organization.

Mena Monitor added that among the wounded militants were Abu Yahya al-Masri and Abu Dhar al-Masri.

On March 10, 2022 in the CJTF-OIR Civilian Casualty Report, the Coalition reported this incident to be “non-credible”, stating that “After review of all available evidence it was determined that more likely than not civilian casualties did not occur as a result of a Coalition strike.”

The incident occured in the afternoon.

Airwars assessment

In what has been described by reporters as a “massacre”, no less than 11 civilians, including seven children and one woman, died following an aerial bombardment on the residential neighbourhood al Marja. According to LCCSY, the neighbourhood was targeted with rockets containing spatial cluster bombs. The source later said that the Russian air force carried out at least four raids, with the use of rocket spatial cluster bombs on Al Marjah neighbourhood.

LCCSY also reported that a minimum of 18 other civilians were injured.

Reports of material damage were confirmed by the Shaam News Network, which said that hundreds of civilian homes were hit with “violently explosive barrel bombs”.

Between nine and 11 civilians were killed in airstrikes on Sawaneh according to local sources – though reports were conflicted as to whether this was the work of Russia or the Assad regime.

ARA also put the death toll at 11, adding that “among the dead were two brothers who moved to the city of Palmyra recently, Basil Arif al-Khoja and Obeid Arif al-Khoja.”

However, the Syrian Network for Human Rights said that at least seven died in regime shelling.

Airwars assessment

Three to eleven civilians were killed in an airstrike on Ariha on May 27th.

According to numerous sources, of those killed, two to four were children, including three siblings.

The Syrian regime was named by multiple sources as responsible for the attack, while many did not positively attribute blame. Russia was named by six sources as an active belligerent in the airstrike.

While Edlib Media Center initially estimated three civilians to have been killed, this source cited more deaths as understanding of the events unfolded, later claiming that eleven civilians perished as a result of the attack.

Ariha Today named 10 civilian fatalities, including six women and three young siblings, Zain, Sham and Wesam Fadel Fahham.

Furthermore, Syria.liveuamap claimed that as many as 28 civilians had been injured in the bombardment, while Syria Civil Defense initially estimated the figure to be 20.

Step news stated that “the toll of the dead and wounded in Jericho is likely to rise due to the continued lifting of the rubble and the removal of civilians under it.”

Shaam News reported that “the Assad forces are carrying out a genocide, with clear Russian political support, across the southern Idlib countryside.” This source stated that there was “a focus on bombing major markets, cities and communities, and displacing thousands from their homes.”

Multiple sources documented the enormous destruction to civilian property and infrastructure in both videos and photos.

According to Shaam News, the alleged Russian and Syrian regime military action on May 27th represents a “continuing of a systematic genocide against civilians, amid the silence of the world.”

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

As many as 11 civilians were killed and 30 injured in alleged Russian airstrikes on Palmyra, according to local sources.

Shaam News Network reported that nine civilians, mostly women and children, were killed in a bombardment by Russian warplanes. It said there were several raids, mainly focused on the Al Wadi road.

The Coordinating Committee of the City of Palmyra listed ten victims allegedly killed by Russia, and said nearly 30 were wounded, five critically.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, “warplanes believed to be Russian” killed at least seven. It said there was information about two other children among many injured people, and added that the death toll was expected to rise due to the severity of injuries and because some people were still missing under the rubble.

Airwars assessment

Eleven civilians including six children and three women were killed and up to 60 others injured in alleged Russian airstrikes on Douma, according to local sources.

Shaam News Network reported that “intense air raids by the Russian enemy on civilian homes in the city of Douma led to the fall of many wounded including women and children.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that at least five non-combatants died – “a citizen woman, man and two of his children and the child of his brother” – when suspected Russian warplanes carried out around 30 raids on areas in city, Ein Tarma and elsewhere in al-Marj and in the Eastern Ghouta. It later reported the death toll had risen to eight and added that the death toll was expected to rise because there were more than 20 people injured, some in critical condition. Friday Prayers in Douma were cancelled as a result of the strikes.

According to the Damascus White Helmets, there were more than 10 raids by Russian warplanes on residential areas in Douma, in conjunction with “violent artillery shelling“. Most other sources also blamed Russia, with accounts of the number of raids carried out varying between 20 and 50.

Syrian Press Centre reported that “Russian warplanes have launched 21 air raid targeted the neighbourhoods of the city of Douma on Friday, resulting in the fall of the eight martyrs dozens wounded, most of them children, were killed.”

According to Al Jazeera, there were “more than 50 Russian warplane raids in Eastern Ghouta on Douma, Jobar, Ain Tarma and Zamalaka which killed 11 people and wounded many others. Five of the dead were in Douma.”

Baladi, attributing the incident to Russia, also put the death toll at eight, but said that as many as 60 were injured – most of them women and children.

However, Al Souria appeared to blame both Russia and the regime, saying: “the Russian and regime Aviation targeted a number of residential neighbourhoods within the city”. But it  went on to add: “According to media activists from the city of Douma there have been more than 22 documented raids targeted several neighbourhoods within the city, with three Russian planes circling the skies coinciding with surveillance planes.

For his part, the correspondent of ‘Douma coordinating committee’ on Facebook said that 20 raids was carried out by the Russian Aviation within one hour on the neighbourhoods of the city under bombardment from rocket launchers.”

However, other reports, including those by the Syrian Network for Human Rights said that the regime was responsible. Some other sources referred to “terrorist groups”. Hour News tweeted: “According to SANA [government news agency] terrorist groups attacked Douma and Jobar in Damascus with missiles and shelling” – though didn’t identify these groups.

Annahar added that “Jaysh Al-Islam in Eastern Ghouta accused the regime of throwing two explosive barrels in an apparent breach of the ceasefire.”

The Violations Documentation Centre named 11 victims, including six children and one woman, as killed in regime shelling.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
