Airwars assessment

On August 9th 2023, a civilian was killed and at least one other civilian, a child, was slightly injured, as a result of artillery shelling by Syrian regime and/or Russia forces on the village of Tadel, west of Aleppo.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that an elderly civilian was killed and a child and a young man were injured, and the injured were taken to the hospital for treatment. Local sources including the Syrian Human Rights Committee and tweets from @spc_fr and @Najdat567 identified the person killed as civilian youth/young man Khaled Abdel Qadir. NPA also reported that Khaled Abdel Qadir had been killed, but stated that he was 54 years old. @SyriaCivilDefe and Orient news did not identify the civilian, but reported that an elderly civilian had been killed.

According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, multiple shells hit the village of Tadel, including one that landed in the middle of the village and caused the civilian casualties.

Sources were conflicted as to who was responsible, with the Syrian Civil Defense (@SyriaCivilDefe) blaming both the Syrian regime and Russia while NPA attributed the shelling to the Syrian regime only, specifically pointing to regime forces stationed in the 46th Regiment while Anadolu News assigned responsibility to regime forces stationed in the village of Kafr Halab.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

The victims were named as:

Khaled Abdel Qadir خالد عبد القادر

Airwars assessment

On August 5th 2023, between three and four civilian children were injured during shelling allegedly carried out by the Syrian regime and/or Russian forces on a residential neighborhood in the city of Jisr al-Shughur, Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported a few days later that one of the children had died from their wounds.

The Syrian Civil Defense (@SyriaCivilDefe) reported that the four children from the same family had suffered “fractures and bruising” when a wall collapsed outside their home following shelling. Syria TV added that one of the injuries was “a case of suffocation due to inhalation of rubble and shelling dust.” The Syrian Civil Defence posted images on the X website, formerly Twitter, of their teams inspecting the aftermath of the shelling and providing medical treatment to a child named Haitham Sarhan Dandash, who is five years old.

@Omar_Madaniah provided the names of three of the children injured: Haitham Sarhan Dandash, five years old, injured, male; Salam Sarham Dandash, five years old, injured, male; Kawkab Sarhan Dandash, fourteen years old, injured female.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on August 10th, five days after the incident, that one of the children later died of her wounds.

Our-Syria news identified the location of the shelling as being close to Al-Turkman Mosque in Jisr al-Shughur.

Sources were conflicted as to who was responsible for the shelling, with the Syrian Civil Defense blaming both the Syrian regime and Russian forces while the majority of sources attributed the shelling to the Syrian regime. Syria TV specified that the shelling came from Syrian regime forces stationed in Jourin camp.

The incident occured in the evening.

الطريق الواصل بين عين شيب ومدينة إدلب, the linking road between Idlib and Ain Sheep, Idlib, Syria

Airwars assessment

On August 5th, 2023, three civilians were killed and seven injured in alleged Russian or Syrian regime airstrikes on residences along a road which links Idlib to the village of Ain Sheeb. The strikes occurred between 11:02 a.m. and 11:11 a.m. local time.

According to Syria Civil Defence (SCD), the first strike struck a residential house, located on a farm along the road at 11:02 a.m. The attack killed Absi Muhammad Sami Balsha (54), his wife Ibtisam Suleiman (40), and their son Ahmed Balsha (17).

A second strike hit the same location at 11:04 a.m.

The third strike occurred at 11:11 a.m. and struck a nearby residence, while humanitarian and medical workers—including some affiliated with Syrian Civil Defense—were rescuing injured civilians, per SCD News. The Syrian Network for Human Rights independently reported that this final attack wounded one aid worker.

Seven people were injured in the strikes: Abd al-Rahman Jazairi; Yahya Kayali; Mohamed Sabreen; Muhammad Abbas Benshi; his wife, Raghad Noman; and Omar Jamali. This list of victims is corroborated by Violations Documentation Center, Hdhod News, SCD News, and multiple independent reporters, among other sources. According to the Violet Organisation, the leader of its Idlib ambulance team, Abdul Aziz Natour, also sustained a minor injury.

Al-Marsad 80 and the Syrian Opposition Air Traffic Tracking Observatory reported that Russian forces launched the attack; on August 5th, two Russian Su-34 fighter jets left Khmeimim Air Base in Latakia to conduct raids across Idlib governorate. The Violations Documentation Center was the only source that accused the Syrian regime of carrying out the airstrikes.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights also suggested that the farm housed the headquarters of a local faction of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

The incident occured between 11:02 am and 11:11 am local time.

Airwars assessment

On July 26, 2023, two civilians were reportedly killed in al-Atareb, Aleppo, in an artillery strike allegedly launched by Syrian regime and/or Russian forces. Aid workers indicated that two additional people were injured in the attack.

Syria Civil Defence shared that a young man and his uncle—identified as Mahmoud Ahmad Rustam and Abd al-Razzaq Abdo Rustam by independent journalist Ahmad al-Shably—were killed on the outskirts of al-Atareb while they were grazing sheep, with other sources mentioning that the civilians were in a car at the time of the attack. Sources corroborate that the two men were shepherds, who lived in the nearby village of Anjara.

When asked by Syria TV News, Civil Defence personnel stated that two other individuals were wounded, one of whom was Mahmoud Ahmad Rustam’s father. The spokesman also stated that the artillery strike and concurrent guided missile attack were launched by the Syrian regime and Russian military forces. Multiple sources refer to the munition used in the attack as an anti-tank guided missile, or ATGM.

A tweet from @mzmgr941 pointed out that at the time, seven Russian/Iranian reconnaissance planes and three Coalition reconnaissance planes were monitoring the area.

Following the attack, victims were evacuated and treated by aid workers affiliated with Syria Civil Defence. The Syrian Civil Defense also reported that around midnight the same evening, a car for the families of the victims of the initial strike were attacked by guided missiles launched by the Syrian regime forces, which resulted in a fire but no injuries. However, the Syrian regime continued to monitor the location, making it difficult for Civil Defense volunteers to reach the site of the strikes.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

On the morning of Friday, July 14th 2023, at least one civilian, a woman, was injured and a fire broke out in a disused poultry farm when Russian and/or Syrian regime forces allegedly shelled the residential neighborhoods and outskirts of the town of Sarmin, south-east of Idlib, with heavy artillery fire. The injured woman was treated and taken to hospital by the Syrian Civil Defence, the fires were put out and the area secured.

@Najdat567 claimed that the shelling led to several injuries and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that a man and a woman were injured and taken to hospital as a result of the shelling. On July 11th 2023, Syrian Civil Defense volunteer Abdul Basset Ahmed Abdel-Khalek was killed when Syrian regime and/or Russian forces reportedly struck a rescue vehicle in the vicinity of the city of Atareb, west of Aleppo.

Local sources including @SyriaCivilDefe and Rasd Syria News stated that Abdul was killed in a double tap attack by regime forces with a guided missile, while the team was inspecting places that were hit by artillery shelling.

The Syria Monitoring Network of Human Rights reported that the “Syrian regime forces are still continuing their violations against civilians in their areas of control, violating international laws and non-compliance with them, and violating the ceasefire agreement, and recently increased shelling by the Syrian regime forces on civilian-populated cities.”

A tweet from @jabalybaraa includes a video of the Civil Defense vehicle up in flames, which was attributed to a guided missile, which resulted in the death of the volunteer.

The majority of the sources attributed the missile attack to the Syrian regime, while @tAAprK80Nn3GKmd identified Russian forces as responsible.
