Airwars assessment

At least four or five civilians died in an alleged Turkish shelling of Miska Jorin village, according to sources on the ground in Syria.

Afrin Now reported the death of four civilians, three of whom were still under the rubble. Other sources also put the death toll at four.

ANHA was among several sources publishing a video of the aftermath of the attack. It reported: “As a result of the bombing of the village of Miska Fokani in Jandrissa area, 4 civilians were killed. The Kurdish Red Crescent teams recovered the body of one martyr while the bodies of 3 civilians were still under the rubble and cannot be reached due to the continued intensive shelling of the area.”

ANHA added that Turkey had launched attacks on Jindires with heavy weapons, as well as a bombardment by military and helicopter gunships.

According to Mutlu Civiroglu, five civilians were reported killed after their home collapsed over them. The body of one victim under rubble is visible in the video.

Up to five civilians including one child died and more were wounded – including members of the civil defense – in artillery shelling on Al Bab, Syria, local media reported – though many sources didn’t identify the culprit. A tweet by a local “Amna Alali” was the only source to attrbute blame to Turkey.

Ameer Alabad reported that three members of civil defense wounded as they went about their duties.

A another report by Al Bab 24, added that “a rocket bombardment resulted in the injury of three rescue workers – Hassan Al Haj, Firas al-Haj and Mahmoud Basha, two of them were left in a critical condition. Additionally, the father of Mahmoud Basha died in a raid while he was trying to aid his son Mahmoud Basha.”

The Shaam News Network said that five civilians died and several more were wounded in artillery shelling.

Between one and three civilians died in an alleged Turkish bombing of Shkata village, according to local media.

The Military Council for Manbij and its Countryside reported that in the afternoon, at approximately 14:00, the Turkish Air Force launched several raids on the village of Shikata in the Shih area and targeted civilian houses. The shelling destroyed a house and its inhabitants. After several hours of shelling, residents managed to reach the house and search among the rubble pulling out the body of the citizen Nassrat Othman, 50 years old and took him to Afrin hospital.

Sources added that three or four other people remained under the rubble.

According to Afrin Now, three civilians were killed after Turkish warplanes bombed the village of Shakato a short while ago. Of the victims, one man was identified, and the rest of the bodies were still under the rubble.

Hawar News added that Nusrat Osman was taken to the hospital, but doctors could not save him.

SotKurdistan reported that “The raids started first without shelling, and shortly afterwards five shells fell on the village. We took Nusrat’s body four hours from the rubble and there are more than three victims who are still under the rubble. Rubble, no machinery or equipment to lift them.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported: “While three people were killed, including a woman, by bombing and shelling by the Turkish forces and warplanes on areas in Tedef town and Al Bab city in the northeastern countryside of Aleppo which is controlled by the ‘Islamic State’ organization.”

Asharq Alarabi reported a higher number: “In the governorate of Aleppo, 15 people were killed, eight of them in the shelling of the towns of Tedef, Al Bureij and Al Bab in the governorate’s countryside.”

LCCSY only said that ten civilians died due to Turkish shelling in the Aleppo area with the majority of them around Al Bab.

Al Raed La Ykazeb Ahlahu cited the IS media agency Al A’amaq, reporting that there had been “18 Turkish raids on Al Bab and more than 100 artillery shells dropped on January 7th”.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, “Turkish forces and warplanes, which killed at least 6 people and injured several others including children, and the death toll is expected to rise because there are some people in a critical situation.”

Halab News named the civilians killed in Al Bab and reported it was a result of artillery shelling. They did not attribute blame.

Jabal Aqel Al Bab listed the names of the victims however did not attribute the shelling to any belligerent.

Smart News, however, reported Turkish airstrikes on Al Baza’a that day without mentioning civilian harm.

LCCSY, on the next day, said six people died around Al Bab from Turkish artillery shelling.
