Airwars assessment

Between 30 and 42 people, from a three month old to a 77 year old, were killed and a large number were injured when the home of the Saqa Allah family was reportedly bombed in what was reported to be a “double tap” Israeli airstrike during the night of Wednesday, October 18th 2023. The home was located behind a coffee shop in Sheikh Ajleen near Tal al-Hawa, in the west of the Gaza Strip.

Everyone who had been in the house was reportedly killed. Videos provided to CNN showed “charred ruins and rubble, of what relatives say used to be three buildings” in the Saqallah family compound. Relative’s accounts, reported by CNN, described a first strike followed by a second strike that reduced the compound to rubble and reportedly killed any survivors in the compound.

The victims were identified by their relatives as a set of four brothers 51-year-old Saed Mohammed Khourshid Saqa Allah, 49-year-old Omar Mohammed Khourshid Saqa Allah, 43-year-old Khourshid Mohammed Khourshid Saqa Allah and 37-year-old Ameed Mohammed Khourshid Saqa Allah (Abu Saif) as well as their sister 47-year-old Maysoon Mohammed Khourshid Saqa Allah and her son and daughter. Saed was killed alongside his wife, Noha Al-Qishawy, their son, 27-year-old Mohammed Saed Khourshid Saqa Allah and his wife 24-year-old Alaa Ayman Jafer Al-Helo as well as Saed’s daughters, two other sons and all of his grandchildren, according to a post by Saleh Abu Muhammad. Omar, also known as Abu Karam, was killed alongside his wife, 47-year-old Sahar Issam Abo Shaban, their daughters, their son 15-year-old Ahmad Omar Khourshid and Sahar’s father, 77-year-old Isam Jalal Abo Shaban. Isam’s wife, 67-year-old Layla Saqa Allah Abo Shaban (Umm Jalal) and their son, Ahmed, and daughter were also killed.

Multiple sources reported that the extended Saqa Allah family had gathered together in one house in Sheikh Aljeen to shelter from the ongoing bombardment of the Gaza Strip. CNN put the number of those killed at 42, while Press TV pointed out that the death toll was between 30 and 42.

CNN interviewed Manal Saqa Allah, the sister of Saed, Omar, Khourshid, Ameed and Maysoon, and her husband Tariq Hamouda, who have both lived in Minnesota, USA since 2004. Manal lost almost all of her family overnight and Tariq said that, even a week later, he and Manal could barely comprehend the news. He said that Manal loved every member of her family and spent the summer with them. Tariq also said that they didn’t have time to mourn as they were worried about the safety of few the who survived.

The elderly mother of Manal, Saed, Omar, Khourshaid, Ameed and Maysoon, referred to as Umm Saed and her grandson Karam Omar Saqa Allah survived the incident according to a Facebook post by Wasim Saqer. Tariq Hamouda reported that Umm Saed had been standing on a balcony when the first strike occurred and she had been able to escape with the help of another surviving relative. Tariq reported that she had said her sons had tried to evacuate but had not had time, adding that his family were not involved in any military activity.

Another American relative, South Florida resident, Eyad Abu Shaban, said “It’s like your whole world stops” and that the number of people killed in the incident is really hard to cope with. Eyad reported that the ages of the victims ranged from three months old to 77 years old and that they were all staying in a single compound.

According to Tariq, surviving family members told him that, before the incident, the Israeli Defense Force had called to say that there could be military activity in the area but had not told the family to evacuate their home. Adding that there had been bombings happening with and without warnings; he lamented the confusion and fear of the situation.

CNN had reached out to the IDF to confirm the strike. The IDF said they couldn’t comment without the coordinates of the house and the family declined to provide them for fear of reprisal.

Eyad Abu Shaban reported that amongst the victims in his family were multiple medical professionals and of the four brothers, Saed, Omar and Khourshid were eye doctors and Ameed was an ENT specialist. The Saqa Allah family ran the largest network of family-owned eye clinics in the Gaza Strip.

Many tributes were made to the family on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), including a post from Adham Al-Sofar E who described the family as “the best people in morals and manner” and “friends like no other”.

CNN reported that the community in Maple Grove, Minnesota had rallied around Tariq and Manal, many had offered their support and others had gone to Brooklyn Park Islamic Center to pray for the family.

Tariq, Manal and Eyad expressed their deep distress to CNN, with Eyad saying “We’ve never seen in this day and age where the whole world is watching innocent people just being torn apart. Families, whole families, just wiped off the map,” and “I want everybody to know that the people of Gaza are just like them, they hurt, they bleed, they have families, they have feelings.”

Many sources reported that the bodies of victims were buried under rubble.

The surviving family members wrapped the victims in white burial shrouds and buried them in a mass grave, shown in a video provided to CNN.

Saed, Omar, Khourshid, Ameed, Maysoon, Mohammed, Sahar, Alaa, Isam, Layla and Ahmed Khourshid were matched to the list of fatalities published by the Palestinian Ministry of Health on October 26, 2023. Their names, ages and ID numbers are listed below.

Saed and Noha’s unnamed sons, daughters and grandchildren as well as Omar and Sahar’s unnamed daughters are not listed below unfortunately as no sources have confirmed how many they are.

The incident is likely to have occurred in the night between October 18 and 19, 2023. However, the exact time of the incident is not known.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli Forces.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The incident occured around midnight.

Airwars assessment

On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 18th 2023, several children were reportedly killed and injured when an alleged Israeli airstrike hit the Hammad family home in the Al-Alami neighborhood in the Jabalia camp, in the north of the Gaza Strip. The precise number of victims remains unknown and the victims have not yet been identified.

On October 18th 2023, the Information Office of the Palestinian Ministry of the Interior and National Security reported on X/Twitter that the Hamad family home had been destroyed and a number of children had been killed in an incident that afternoon.

Many sources reported this incident including the Palestinian news agency Safa and the Palestinian Ministry of the Interior. Almost all sources repeated the same quote from the original post by the Palestinian Ministry of the Interior, with the exception of Al-Weeaam News Agency which used different language when it reported the incident on its website. In line with Airwars methodology, the civilian harm status of this incident has been assessed to be “Fair” because more than one source reported the incident with sufficiently different information. Three sources, Abdulrahman al Abaldeh, the Palestinian Ministry of the Interior and the Palestinian Information Centre posted multiple different photos of the incident on Facebook and X/Twitter.

Several news outlets and journalists shared images depicting Emergency Medical Services pulling up severely injured children from beneath the rubble. One image depicted the acute infrastructural damage caused by the attack, which completely collapsed the multi story building.

@aa_arabic shared a video on X/Twitter of Emergency Medical teams rushing dust covered children from an ambulance into a crowded hospital to receive treatment. The comment read “A new massacre in #Khan Yunis against the Hammad family, the majority of whom are children”. This source may not have referred to this incident as it described the incident taking place in Khan Yunis, which is a city in the southern Gaza Strip.

All sources reference “a number” of people were killed, “a majority” of whom were children; but the precise number is unclear. Images of the incident posted on X/Twitter and Facebook by Abdulrahman al Abaldeh, the Palestinian Ministry of the Interior and the Palestinian Information Centre show at least three different children who had been harmed.

Both the Palestinian Ministry of the Interior and Al-Waaeem news agency reported that the incident was caused by an Israeli Military aircraft.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The incident occured in the afternoon.

Airwars assessment

On 18 October 2023, 11 people were killed and 13 people were injured when an alleged Israeli airstrike hit the home of the Al-Harazin family on Al-Sikka Street, near Al-Sadiqin Mosque in Al-Zaytoun neighbourhood, east of Gaza City.

The attack was reported by Palinfo on Twitter/X, via a post stating that a warplane had bombed the home causing deaths and multiple injuries. A post from Facebook user Nedal Nayef claimed that 13 people had been injured. More details on the exact location and victims of the attack were posted via family and friends on Facebook.

Nephews, friends and other family members of the Al-Harazin family posted on social media mourning the loss of 11 people in the attack. Riyad Muhammad al-Harazin and his wife, referred to only as Umm Muhammad, were killed in the attack on their home, alongside their daughter Najma Riad al-Harazin, and two sons Abdul Hadi Riyad al-Harazin and Muhammad Riyad al-Harazin. Abdul’s daughter Sadan Abboud al-Harazin died alongside her father, while Muhammad’s wife Fidaa Khaled al-Harazin and their son Abdul Rahman Muhammad al-Harazin were also reportedly killed in the airstrike. Riyad’s granddaughter was also allegedly killed in the attack but was not named. Anwar Shuwaikh al-Harazin and her daughter (unnamed) were also reported amongst those killed by the alleged Israeli airstrike on the home. Esraa al-Hazareen took to Facebook to lament those still believed under rubble: “My uncle’s wife and daughter Najma are still under the rubble. Their bodies have not been found.”

User @az_za98 posted on Twitter/X, claiming that two people were rescued from the rubble of the home but it is unclear from the tweet if they survived the attack or not. Based on posts from various family members on Facebook, as many as four children may have been killed in this attack, although the exact ages of those killed are unclear.

The house was left in pieces, with nephew Mohammad Ramy posting on Facebook that it had been “completely blown up.” The family, he said, was “in crisis.”

Airwars was not able to match any of the names of victims with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of nearly 7000 victims’ names, age and ID numbers released on October 26th.

Airwars assessment

At around 10 PM on Wednesday, 18th October, 2023, between 13 and 15 members of the Barika family were killed, including an elderly couple, five children and four women, among them a pregnant mother and her unborn baby, when an alleged Israeli airstrike hit their family home, west of the city of Rafah. At least twelve civilians, most of them children, were injured.

Shehab Agency initially reported 10 killed and a number of of injured in the attack. Referring to Palestinian sources, YPAgency reported that the death toll had risen to 13. A Facebook user Nonaa later wrote that 15 members of the Barika family had been killed, and that the death toll may rise as others could still be beneath the rubble.

Social media tributes by family and friends helped to identify the names of the thirteen killed members of the Barika family.

A grandfather, 54-year old Haji Ahmed Khalil Rajab Barika (Abu Ihab) was killed alongside his wife 51-year old Taghreed Sabri Suleiman Barika, their two sons – 22-year old Jamal Ahmed Khalil Rajab Barika and 29-year old Iyad Ahmed Khalil Rajab Barika and their three daughters – 17-year old Haneen Ahmed Khalil Rajab Barika, 27-year old Rawan Ahmed Khalil Rajab Barika, and 14-year old Maram Ahmed Khalil Rajab Barika. Abu Ihab also lost his brother, 56-year old Haji Kamel Khalil Rajab.

The attack also took the lives of their two daughters-in-law, wife of Jamal 23-year old Shams Amer Abdel-Rahman Barika and 30-year old Nidaa Ibrahim Hamma, and their grandchilren – a grandson (son of Iyad) 4-year old Ahmed Iyad Ahmed Barika, a granddaughter (daughter of Iyad) 6-year old Revan Iyad Ahmed Barika and a granddaughter (daughter of Nidaa) 7-year old Menna Imad Muhammad Baraka.

A Facebook user Akhmed Zorub posted a condolence message for his neighbours, the Barika family, and shared images of some of the victims. A family relative Abboud Mahmoud Barika wrote that “I cry with all the broken heart and sadness of the news”, and also shared some images, including those of the deceased children. Another family relative, Ahmed Khaled Barika, posted that “Today I bid farewell to my uncles and their children and grandchildren”. In his post, the images of some women who were killed in the strike could be seen.

Among the victims killed in the airstrike was an unborn girl Fatima Alzahraa. Twitter/X user @Sorita921 posted a picture of a baby half wrapped in a body bag, reporting that “a newborn girl came out of her martyr’s mother’s womb after seven months of pregnancy”. A Facebook user Nonaa Zakarea posted a graphic image of the dead fetus. It is unclear which of the women who was killed was pregnant.

A Facebook user Dejavo Soli reshared photos depicting groups of murdered children covered in ash and dust being wrapped up in body bags, with the comment; “these are not burnt dolls and put in bags. They are all extinguished, people of Gaza. For what sin were they killed? We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return”.

A number of civilians, most of them children, were also reported as injured in the deadly attack. Television network AJMubasher shared a heartbreaking video on Twitter/X of a young boy covered in dust from the rubble crying in distress from pain and calling his father. This video and pictures of the injured civilians shared by the Twitter/X user @Flood_Al_Aqsa and a Facebook user Jehan Yousef helped to ascertain at least twelve injured people, most of them small children. A child, Muhammed Barika, was reportedly taken to the hospital after the attack, but it is unclear whether the child received treatment or if it was successful.

A Facebook user Ibrahim shared a video online with the comment “Funeral of the Barika family massacre”. Large groups of men were depicted carrying bodies through the city to their burial place. People stood in a row along the street with their heads down and eyes closed, mourning the deaths of the murdered family.

The local sources mentioned “bombardment” and did not indicate whether that was artillery strike or airstrike. Several sources shared photos depicting a large heap of rubble, where a now destroyed building once stood, surrounded by groups of men searching in the darkness for missing people beneath.

Airwars has matched all of the names with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of nearly 7000 victims’ names and ID numbers released on October 26th.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The incident occured at approximately 10:00 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

On 18th October 2023, four members of the Abu Shamala family, two women and two children, were killed and others were wounded by an alleged Israeli bombardment in the Al-Alami area of Jabalia camp.

Facebook posts from relatives have identified 20-year-old Saba Muhammad Daher as killed in the strike, with one relative describing Saba as a “flower.” A video of Saba’s father, Dr. Mohammed Doher receiving the news while working in the Indonesian hospital in the Northern Gaza Strip, has been circulated on Twitter by user @Shehabagency. On Facebook, Uday Abu Shamala referred to her as “Dr. Saba Dhaher,” meaning she may have been following in her father’s footsteps.

Alongside Saba, 50-year old Hanaa Abu Shamala, her daughter 16-year old Maha Abu Shamala and her granddaughter 3-year old Beirut Muhammad Abu Shamala were also reportedly killed in the strike.

Safa News quoted the Ministry of Interior who reported that in addition to those killed, there were wounded, but did not specify how many.

Airwars has matched the names of all of the civilians killed with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023, which explicitly mentions that names on the list are “victims of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip”. Along with one other source that attributed the strike to Israeli forces, this incident has been graded as a likely strike.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Around 2:29 AM on Wednesday, October 18th 2023, at least 21 civilians, members of the Sakeek family, including at least ten children and six women, were reportedly killed and a number of others were wounded in an alleged Israeli airstrike on their home on Omar al-Mukhtar Street, opposite the production bank in Gaza City, Gaza Strip.

Initial reportage from Shehab Agency, al-Mayadeen, Nabd and PaltodayTV stated that there were “martyrs and wounded” as a result of the alleged bombing, with al Aqsa Voice stating that there were a “number of casualties.”

Videos shared on social media showed ambulances and rescue workers rushing to the site of the bombing in darkness, with another source sharing a video of the rubble and destruction in the aftermath of the reported strike. A neighbor and relative of the Sakeek family stated that they were consoling their “neighbor, brother and friend Abdul Rahman Sakeek” after most of their family members were martyred in the bombing that allegedly occurred “while they were sleeping.”

A family relative Mohammed Saleem Skaik shared on Facebook the images of numerous bodies of the victims wrapped in shrouds and placed in the back of a van and later in a ditch on the ground and wrote that more than 25 members of his family were killed: “God granted martyrdom to the cousins of my family last night in a barbaric bombing, where more than 25 of them were martyred. Scenes that cannot be described and cannot be abandoned, but our only consolation is that they are in a paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth.”

Surviving members of the family posted the names of 21 people killed in the bombing, with user Abu Jalal sharing an image of a middle-aged bearded man and stating that “Amjad Sakeek and his entire family were martyrs.”

A family grandfather Hajj Muhy al-Din Abdel Rahman Muhy al-Din Sakeek (Abu al-Abd) (78) was killed alongside his sons Hajj Amjad Muhy al-Din Abdel Rahman Sakeek (42) and Muhammad Muhiddeen Abdel Rahman Sakeek (33), his daughter-in-law (wife of Amjad) Iman Gamal Abd al-Qadir Sakeek (40) and Amjad and Iman’s children Muhiddeen Amjad Muhiddeen Sakeek (13) and Mena Amjad Muhiddeen Sakeek (15).

The deadly attack also killed Muhammad’s wife Dina Alaa Ibrahim Sakeek (32) along with Dina and Muhammad’s children Ali Muhammad Muheisen Sakeek (6) and Tala Muhammad Muheisen Sakeek (4).

Among the killed victims were also a daughter-in-law of Abu al-Abd Inas Ramzi Muhammad Sakeek (37) married to his son Saad, with their four children – Ayyam Saadallah Bahaa Al-Din Sakeek (13), Karam Saadallah Bahaa Al-Din Sakeek (11), Bahaa Al-Din Saadallah Bahaa Al-Din Sakeek (17), and Kareem Saadallah Bahaa Al-Din Sakeek (11).

Within the related family, Hajj Baha’al-Din Abdel Rahman Muhayyis Sakeek (Abu Saad) (72) was killed alongside his wife Wissam Muhammad Khaleel Sakeek (61), their daughter Noor Bahaa al-Din Abdel Rahman Sakeek (38), their son Abdullah Bahaa al-Din Abdel Rahman Sakeek (Abu Omar) (34), Abdullah’s wife Dana Hashem Saadi Sakeek (30), as well as Abdullah and Dana’s children – their son Anas Abdullah Bahaa Al-Din Sakeek (1) and their daughter Joan Abdullah Bahaa Al-Din Sakeek (6).

Social media user Abu Mohammad shared an image of Baha’al-Din Sakeek (Abu Saad) – an elderly, clean-shaven man standing at a religious lectern – and revealed that he was the Muezzin for their mosque.

Colleagues of Abu Mohammad’s son Abdullah Sakeek (Abu Omar) mourned his death, sharing that he was the financial auditor of the Qawafil Al-Khair Association, and posted a video of him, a smiling, cheerful middle-aged man. A friend of the late Abdullah Mahmoud AliHasan posted on Facebook his last conversation with him and wrote that Abdullah was “a boy in whom all types of goodness were combined.” His wife Dana and their children were remembered in a Facebook tribute by Mariam Ghaith who mourned their death “as a result of the bombing of their house in Gaza at dawn.”

Other images of the victims shared included elderly men and young boys, with user Hasen posting an image of Abu Omar Sakeek Shahid – a smiling, bearded man – with the caption Goodbye, my dear heart…May God have mercy on you and accept you, my beloved.”

All names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.

Where sources identified the belligerents all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

An apartment belonging to Abu Rukba family located on the fifth floor of the five-storey Al-Namnam building on Faraj Allah Street in Al-Nuseirat Camp, Gaza Strip, was hit by an alleged strike around 10 PM on Wednesday, 18 October 2023, reportedly killing up to two civilians, including a 14-year-old child, and injuring two civilians. Photos on social media showed a building collapsed into a pile of rubble.

Shehab News Agency and Al-Mayadeen reported a bombing of the building and the death of a child whose body was delivered to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. A Twitter/X user @YouthGoDigital shared an image showing the transportation of the child’s body in an ambulance. Airwars assessment

In the evening of Wednesday, October 18th 2023, an alleged Israeli airstrike on a yard outside the Ahmed Abdul Aziz School killed at least five civilians, including two children and three men, and reportedly injured between 12 to 40 people. The school hosted displaced civilians from Northern Gaza. The death toll may be significantly higher than five civilians as Masrawy news wrote about “dozens of martyrs and wounded”, and a correspondent of AlGhadTV reported about 40 injured people.

The school was located west of the town of Khan Yunis.

Al Jazeera posted on the Twitter/X social media platform a video showing injured people being transported to hospitals. Al Arabiya correspondent reported that civil protection crews were heading to the school.

The attack killed children of  a man named Ali Al-Qara; his 15-year old daughter Najla Ali Muhammad Al-Qara and 5-year old son Zein Ali Muhammad Al-Qara. According to Majeddiyab Facebook post, they were originally from the town of Khuza’a and were displaced to the Ahmed Abdul Aziz school. Their father Ali Al-Qara wrote a heartfelt testimony on Facebook mourning the loss of his children. He also shared an image of Zein – a young boy in a t-shirt and yellow jacket.

Najla Al-Qara was known for her high school success  –  Anwaa Alrhel wrote about her achievements in a Facebook tribute and shared an image of a girl holding a certificate in her hands surrounded by her teachers or relatives.

According to the social media tributes, among the victims of the attack were also three men –  Ali Muhammad Suleiman Abu Rizq, Hisham Abu Rida, and Ahmed Al-Ghouti.  According to the Twitter/X post by @KareemQaddura, Hisham and Ahmed were also displaced from Northern Gaza.

The deaths of Ali Muhammad Suleiman Abu Rizq and Ahmed Al-Ghouti were mourned in many Facebook posts. A Facebook post by user Ali said “We count you among the martyrs before God. Beloved friend Ali Muhammad Abu Rizq”. From the attached image the late Ali Abu Rizq is seen as a middle-aged bearded man in a black t-shirt. A Facebook post by user Wesam featured an image of the dead body of Ali Muhammad wrapped in a white cloth stained with blood. Ahmed Al-Ghouti’s cousin Saaed shared an image of a young Ahmed Al-Ghouti where he was standing near a red car.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces. The exact time of the strike is unknown.
