Airwars assessment

As the aerial and artillery shelling of eastern Ghouta continued on its third day, up to 17 people, including at least four children and two women, were killed and several were wounded as the town of Hazza was struck by Russian and/or Syrian regime forces, local media reported.

What Zaman al-Wasl, described as “a fierce military campaign” continued in eastern Ghouta, including Hazza, and contained both artillery shelling and missile attacks, especially striking residential areas.

In Hazza, the initial reports put the death toll between seven and nine, which according to Ghouta Media Center (GMC) included children and women from the same family. The source, who blamed Russian air raids, reported “the death of a whole family of eight people, including four children and two women.”

However, on the following day, February 22nd, GMC itself amended the death toll to 17, noting that additional bodies had been found under the rubble.

According to reports, the strikes had also caused injuries among the civilians who were trapped in the rubble, though no exact figures were provided.

Several reports mentioned that the city had been struck by explosive barrels launched from helicopters. For example, HalabToday TV reported how “the Medical Mercy Center is out of service by shelling the explosive barrel on the town of Haza.”

Sources were not clear in terms of culpability, as blame was appointed to either the Syrian regime, Russia, or both across the reports. However, in one report GMC blamed Russian airstrikes while in another, it blamed Syrian regime helicopters for launching explosive barrels, thus indicating engagements from both belligerents.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

At least two, but up to five, civilians were killed and several were wounded as Jisreen, eastern Ghouta, Damascus, was subject to aerial and artillery shelling, carried out by the Syrian regime, Russia or both, as reported by local media.

Zaman al-Wasl reported how several towns of eastern Ghouta, including Jisreen, were being struck by both airstrikes and artillery shelling for the third day in a row, mainly striking residential neighbourhoods.

In Jisreen, the death toll spanned from two to five, the highest reported by only one source, Step News Agency.

While no reports mentioned the exact number of wounded, Step News Agency reported that the shelling of eastern Ghouta, including Jisreen, overall wounded dozens.

Moreover, several reports, such as Ghouta Media Center (GMC), reported that a field hospital in Jisreen went out of service after being struck by “Russian air raids and explosive barrels delivered by helicopter flying over the region.”

However, it was unclear among the reports where to apportion blame. Some blamed the Syrian regime while GMC, as seen above, pointed to Russia, and finally, the Syrian Network for Human Rights identified both belligerents as responsible.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Up to six civilians, including one child, were killed along with five wounded as Hamouriya, eastern Ghouta, Damascus, for the third day in row was subject to Assad and/or Russian air and artillery shelling, local media reported.

According to al-Jazeera’s correspondent, who blamed both Russian and Assad forces, the shelling of eastern Ghouta on February 21st included both explosive drums and rockets while adding that Hamouriya was among the cities with the highest concentration of strikes. Step News Agency reported that both warplanes and helicopter gunships stroke eastern Ghouta towns, including Hamouriya.

While most reports put the death toll at one, Step News reported five fatalities while the Syrian Network for Human Rights reported the highest number of victims, namely “at least six”, including one child.

The Twitter account Omariorphan identified one male victim by name, adding that he besides from being a humanitarian volunteer, also worked at Rawdat Bara’im al-Omari kindergarten in eastern Ghouta.

While some sources referred to “several” wounded, HalabTodayTV said that at least five civilians were left injured.

Sources were not clear in terms of culpability, as blame was appointed to either the Syrian regime, Russia, or both across the reports.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

In what was described as a “massacre”, Russian or Assad-waged aerial and artillery shelling killed up to 35 civilians, including at least seven children, and wounded dozens in Kafar Batna, eastern Ghouta, Damascus, as reported by local media.

As eastern Ghouta continued to be under heavy aerial shelling, the strikes in Kafar Batna town was described as particular intense by local sources, where residential buildings were struck and left in complete rubble.

The death toll spanned from ten, as initially reported by Zaman al-Wasl, to as many as 35. The latter reported by Step News Agency on the following day, February 22nd. Many sources reported “at least” 20 fatalities, including children. Step News Agency reported exactly seven child fatalities.

Additionally, several sources reported that the incident had wounded “dozens”. Damascus Media Center added that most were children.

Besides from airstrikes, the launch of explosive barrels from helicopters was also widely reported among the sources, including Orient News correspondent and Wesal TV.

But sources where not clear who to blame.

While most reports, including al-Jazeera and Orient News, identified the Syrian regime as the culprit, Step News Agency reported, as the only one, that “Russian warplanes and helicopter gunships launched dozens of air strikes and explosive barrages” in several parts of eastern Ghouta, including Kafar Batna. In another tweet about the specific strikes in Kafar Batna, Step News blamed both the Syrian regime and Russia.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Up to 15 civilians, including three children and three women, were killed along with several wounded as the town of Saqba, eastern Ghouta, Damascus, was struck by air raids, local media reported, though culpability was contested.

Like many other towns in eastern Ghouta, it was the third day in a row that Saqba was being struck. Masrawy News reported that eastern Ghouta was struck by both “air, missile and artillery fire.” Images from Saqba following the incident depicted how large parts of the city was left in rubble, including residential buildings and a hospital.

While Zaman al-Wasl reported the lowest death toll, two, most reports noted at least four fatalities. However, the following day, February 22nd, the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SN4HR) reported that the strikes had claimed “at least 15 civilians, including three children and three women, due to intensive shelling by Syrian/Russian warplanes on the city”.

According to al-Araby, five civilians were left wounded while others reported about “several” injured.

Besides from air raids, multiple reports mentioned that helicopters had launched explosive barrels. For example, al-Araby, who cited local sources in eastern Ghouta said that “the helicopter flew explosive barrels at the field hospital in the town of Saqba, hit the wall, which led to the hospital out of work, and wounding two medical staff were injured.”

Marshad al-Hassaka, who blamed Russian warplanes, said that residential neighbourhoods had been hit by rocket-propelled grenades, while Masrawy News counted four concussion rockets.

Sources were unclear in terms of culpability, as blame was apportioned to either Russia, the Syrian regime – or both – across the sources. It should be noted that Masrawy News blamed both Assad and Turkish warplanes – a rather rare allegation for eastern Ghouta.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Up to eight civilians, including at least two women, were killed along with several wounded as airstrikes and artillery shelling continued in eastern Ghouta, Damascus, this time in Zamalaka, local media reported who blamed both Russia and the Syrian regime.

Masrawy News reported how many parts of eastern Ghouta, including Zamalaka, continuously were under “air, missile and artillery shelling”, inflicting great civilian and material damage.

Reports were, however, not clear in terms of how many fatalities the incident had claimed as the death toll spanned from one to eight.

While HalabTodayTV, for example, reported one fatality and several wounded due “an air raid on the city of Zemlka in the eastern Ghouta”, the majority of sources, such as Syrian Network for Human Rights (SN4HR), reported “at least” eight fatalities, hereof two women. Masrawy News cited a civil defence member who put the death toll in Zamalaka at seven.

Ghouta Media Center (GMC) identified seven of the fatalities by name.

Only a few reports apportioned blame. While Masrawy News only blamed the Syrian regime, others, such as SN4HR and GMC, pointed to shared Russian/Assad responsibility.

Airwars assessment

Assad or Russian-waged air and artillery shelling of Hamouriya, eastern Ghouta, Damascus killed at least five civilians, including one woman, and wounded several, local media reported.

Followed by days of intense shelling of eastern Ghouta, including Hamouriya, the death toll reportedly reached five on Tuesday, February 20th. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SN4HR) reported “at least” five fatalities, including one woman in Hamouriya.

@LaLaKdaho and SN4HR identified four of the victims by name.

A civil defence member, cited by Masrawy News said that many civilians were still left under the rubble, expecting more dead and wounded, while adding that Hamouriya had been bombed with rockets carrying cluster bombs.

Also, the local hospital reportedly went out of service due to “systematic bombardment” by air raids, barrels of explosive aircraft helicopters and rockets, as reported by Damascus Media Center.

While Masrawy News as the only one pointed to Assad regime culpability, the remaining sources blamed both Assad and Russian forces, why the event remains contested.

At least seven but as many as 18 civilians, including up to eight children and one woman, were killed and dozens left wounded as Russian and/or Assad forces carried out aerial and artillery shelling of Arbeen, eastern Ghouta, Damascus, as reported by numerous local sources.

In this widely-documented incident, Arbeen was, like the rest of eastern Ghouta, subject  to intense air and ground-launched shelling, especially striking residential areas.

The initial death toll spanned from seven to 11, with many sources reporting four child fatalities. However, the following day, February 21st, The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SN4HR) reported that the toll rose to “at least 18 civilians”, including eight children and a woman, while describing the incident as a “massacre”.

A total of eight civilians were identified by name, including one pair of siblings and a female nurse.

According to Damas Press and Moaz ALshami, “dozens” of civilians were left wounded, hereof mostly children as noted by the latter.

Sources were not clear in terms of culpability. While some, such as the Syrian Civil Defence, blamed the Syrian regime, Aleppo AMC and Ghouta Media Center pointed to Russia. Finally, several reports, including SN4HR, attributed blame to both belligerents, while Ahmad Abazeid, as the only one, blamed both the Syrian regime, Russia and Iran.
