Airwars assessment

Up to three civilians including a child died and four or five others were wounded in a heavy bombardment of Khan Sheikhoun on March 1st, according to local media. The majority of sources blamed the Assad regime, though there were also allegations against Russia.

The heavy shelling reportedly encompassed rockets, artillery and airstrikes. Multiple sources noted that up to 130 artillery shells and rockets hits residential neighbourhoods of the city, resulting in fires to civilian homes and infrastructure and widespread destruction.

According to the White Helmets, who published multiple images depicting the aftermath of the attacks, “two men died and four others were wounded in heavy shelling with more than 130 artillery shells and missiles, targeting the residential neighbourhoods of Khan Sheikhoun city.”

The White Helmets worked to both inspect the sites and rescue victims – and were reportedly struck during the rescue attempts, though the damage in this case was only material.

Mena-monitor also put the death toll at two civilians, adding that this included a child.

Geiroon also reported from the city, stating that “the Syrian regime on Friday [March 1st], the Syrian regime bombed the town of Khan Sheikhan in the southern Idlib countryside with more than 80 rockets, some of them by the air force, some by rocket launchers. The city is now almost empty of residents, activists and eyewitnesses said.”

According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, the regime shelled “near the al Rawda Mosque in the al Sharqi neighbourhood”, partially destroying the building.

While most sources attributed the strikes to Assad, there were also claims against Russia. For example, Smart reported that “the commander of Civil Defense Center in Khan Sheikhoun, Khalid Al Najim, said that forces belonging to the regime to Russia targeted residential neighbourhoods in the city with more than 116 rocket shells, killing two young people, and moderately wounding four others, who were taken to a nearby medical point”.

Baladi pointed to “the forces of the regime and its military militias”.

Amnesty International also reported on the shelling: “Amnesty International also interviewed four residents from Khan Sheikhoun, south of Idlib, who said the vast majority of residents had been displaced after escalating airstrikes and artillery attacks in February which had destroyed or damaged homes and other buildings, including two bakeries and medical clinics located in residential buildings. A civil defence volunteer said: ‘The al-Rawda bakery, the central bakery in Khan, was destroyed in an airstrike attack on 11:30 AM. I removed the bodies of two men who died in the explosion in front of the bakery on the street.” Residents stated that there was no longer any operational hospital in Khan Sheikhoun after an airstrike had destroyed the only field hospital in the town in February 2018. The closest hospital is 20 kilometres away in Maarat al Numan.”

Commenting on the ongoing strikes on the city, Jisrtv said that the additional two civilians deaths in this particular incident on March 1st had brought “the number of civilian deaths in Khan Sheikhoun to 48 since the start of the bombing campaign on the city on February 9th”.

The incident occured at approximately 11:30 am local time.

Airwars assessment

A continuation of artillery shelling on the residential neighbourhood of Khan Sheikhoun meant that between two and 16 civilians were killed, and six or more were wounded, following another “massacre” on the 15th of February.

Sources were conflicted as too who was to blame. Most attributed blame the Syrian regime, however, some also blamed Russia.

JisirTV reported that cluster bombs were used in the artillery strikes. Local media also reported that up tp 25 rockets, and three cluster bombs were used in the raids, causing much material damage. Syrian Civil Defence reported that the vicinity was struck with “30 rocket-propelled grenades”.

Shells marked “made with Egypt” were once again discovered in the vicinity in the aftermath of the raid.

One source reported that in both Khan Sheikhoun and Maara al-Nu’man, “A new massacre today in the countryside of Idlib killed 10 martyrs, four women, three children and two men, and 33 injured, 11 children and four women and 19 men”.

White Helmets worked to rescue the injured, recover the bodies of the dead, and inspect the target sites and secure them. Some of the wounded had to be amputated due to the severity of the artillery injures.

According to France24, 18 civilians were killed in the 48 hour period.

The incident occured around dawn.

Airwars assessment

In what has been described my local media as a massacre, between eight and 14 civilians were killed, including women and children, and “dozens” were injured, following artillery strikes on the residential neighbourhood of Khan Sheikhoun, Idlib.

Most of the local media alleged that the Syrian regime were to blame for the strikes, however some sources did attribute blame to Russia. Smart News was among those who blamed Russian missiles. Hamah Now simply reported “army shelling”, however almost all sources did attribute blame to a belligerent.

According to sources, such as Baladi News, the Syrian regime forces were “stationed in the village of Abu Dali” which is where they shelled the city of Khan Sheikhoun with artillery and missile shells. Similarly, the Syrian Civil Defence stated that the artillery shelling came from the camp “Kubibat Abu Huda” and “Qabria” in the countryside of Hama, where the regime forces were based.

Multiple news sources including El dorar News, attributed the blame to the Syrian regime who were reportedly supported by the The Egyptian army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, in the artillery strikes. As a “the main supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad”, the Egyptian army, “took part in the massacre of Khan Sheikhan in the village of Idlib on Friday.” Additionally another media outlet published an image showing remnants of a shell which had “made in Egypt” stamped on it.

The death toll was as high as eight or nine civilians from the first reports, however many sources claimed that the toll was likely to rise due to the severity of the injures. Despite this, as many as 14 named victims were published via various sources, 20 overall including the injured. However, it was not made clear through the reports whether or not the other names were civilians who were killed or injured.

@abuhuzaifa_ reported that three women and five children were killed in the artillery shelling. However, other reports placed the numbers as high as six children and four women.

Additionally, an image of a civilian being burned alive was published alongside a photograph of a child. According to sources, the victim was that child who was burned by the artillery ammunition whist riding his bike. His sister was also reportedly killed in the bombardement.

SyriaCivilDefense posted that “10 rocket shells were fired by regime forces”, and that many of the wounded were transferred to a hospital in the aftermath.  They later posted there were as many as “25 rocket-propelled grenades” also fired into the vicinity.

Cluster bombs were reportedly used by JisirTV.

Additional detail was published by …. who staged “Assad forces targeted the city of Khan Sheikhoun south of Idlib last night, with more than 50 high-explosive rockets, killing civilians and injuring 15 others, and activists said that among the dead [there were] four people with special needs.”

Two of the civilians with “special needs” were reportedly children.

The heavy shelling left extensive damage to civilian property due to the residential nature of the vicinity.

As many as 18 civilians were killed over 24 hours in the area, according to France24.

The incident occured at 15:30:00 local time.
