Airwars assessment

Local media reported that 18 civilians had died and up to 50 had been wounded in the last 48 hours – however, sources were conflicted as to whether the deaths were caused by the US-led Coalition or Russia. It should also be noted that these are general numbers and Airwars has not yet been able to break them down further to separate casualty incidents.

Ahmadalhashloum, Thefreesyrians and Hadialabdallah blamed Coalition air and artillery strikes for the casualties.

But Maherallosh referred to a “massacre committed by the International Air Force and Russian Airlines in the city of Al-Raqqa during the last 48 hours”.

Airwars assessment

One female civilian, died in an alleged airstrike on the village of Sa’alu, according to local media. The US-led Coalition and Russia were both cited as culprit, amongst multiple references to unidentified aircraft.

According to Qasioun, the Coalition bombed Sa’alu as part of an aerial offensive that targeted multiple villages in the east of Deir Ezzor – Baqiras, Sa’alu and Zubari. Qasioun noted “significant material damage” and alleged no civilian casualties.

Sdusyria was the only source that named Russia responsible, they reported “Russian warplanes and helicopter gunships launched dozens of air raids on the neighborhoods of the city of Deir Ghazur” including Sa’alu, one civilian casualty was documented in the report. @asharqasouri also reported the effects “limited to material damage”, and did not specify an actor.

A later report by Deirfree documented the death of one woman and injury of others, allegedly caused by the “spread of cluster bombs among civilian houses”, which caused “panic among the people”, they did not attribute blame. Euphrates Post subsequently named Ms. Aisha Ahmed Al-Zaher. The majority of sources did not identify the aircraft responsible, with the Coalition receiving one allegation, as did Russia. The US-led Coalition had informed Airwars that as a result of their deconfliction agreements, they had ceased to conduct strikes entirely in Deir Ezzor city.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

The victims were named as:

Ms. Aisha Ahmed Al-Zaher “Umm Daham” wife of Jarad Al-Hamdan

Airwars assessment

Up to 24 civilians died in an airstrike on Al Jarthi town, local media reported – though it was unclear whether the Coalition, Russia or the Syrian regime were responsible. The majority of sources, however, attributed the event to Moscow.

According to Al Haal, “Abu Hassan al-Khalifa (a resident of the town) told al-Hal, that the Russian warplanes targeted the two towns of Al Jarthi Al Sharqi [Eastern] and Al Jarthi al Gharbi [Western], with more than 9 raids, killing 17 civilians, mostly women and children, wounding more than 20 others.”

Al Jisr TV, citing local sources, reported that “[Russian] fighters targeted with rockets a residential complex, and then returned to target a car that tried to aid the wounded”.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights was alone in blaming the Coalition, putting the number killed at “at least 7 civilians, including 2 children and a woman”.

According to the Euphrates Post, “there were more than 15 martyrs and a number of wounded as a result of military aircraft targeting the town of al-Jarthi al-Sharqi [al Jarthi East]. A van carrying civilians in Al Jarthi al Gharbi [al Jarthi West] was struck last night [Dec 5th]. Most of the victims are from the town of al-Duyer, including the family of Ali al-Shakil al-Hamad. The father, son and grandfather died, in addition to three people from al Jarthi itself.

Step News Agency blamed Russia, initially putting the death toll at 14. It later said that the number killed had risen to 23, of which 13 were from one family. It added that “dozens more” were injured.

The Syrian Observatory also pointed towards Russia, initially reporting that 14 people died including six children and women, with 10 more wounded, “during Russia’s support of operations by the SDF east of the Euphrates River”. A further report by the Observatory said that the death toll had risen to 24, of which 10 were children and four were women.

The Smart News Agency also said that the strikes were “likely” Russian.

Qasioun appeared to blame the regime, putting the death toll at 20 with another 30 wounded.

On March 10, 2022 in the CJTF-OIR Civilian Casualty Report, the Coalition reported this incident to be “non-credible”, stating that “After review of all available evidence it was determined that more likely than not civilian casualties did not occur as a result of a Coalition strike.”

Airwars assessment

Up to nine civilians including children and a woman died and as many as dozens more were wounded in airstrikes on Al Jeineh, local media said – though it was unclear whether this was the work of Russia or the Assad regime. Many reports mentioned the use of cluster bombs in the attacks.

Syria News Desk, blaming Russia, put the death count at six with “dozens more injured”. It added that the strikes “targeted the local council in the building”.

According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, “on Saturday noon 13 August 2016, alleged Russian warplanes fired missiles at the residential homes located in western Al Jeyna village, located in the western suburbs of Aleppo governorate which s under the control of armed opposition factions. As a result, nine individuals were killed including two children and one woman.”

However, regime involvement couldn’t be ruled out, with Alburaq reporting that both Russian and Syrian regime warplanes had been carrying out raids over Aleppo during.

Airwars assessment

Up to six civilians including a woman and her children died and as many as dozens more were wounded in an airstrike on Kafr Gom, according to local media – though sources were conflicted as to whether this was the work of Russia or the Assad regime. Many sources noted the use of cluster bombs in the attack – and published images of the remnants of these weapons.

According to the Smart News Agency, Russian warplanes launched raids using cluster bombs on Kafr Gom village in the countryside west of Aleppo, killing three children and a woman, and wounding seven others, in the preliminary toll.”

Other sources blaming Russia included Halab Today (who said that four children and their mother died), Step News Agency and Enabbaladi, who put the death toll as high as six including four children.

There was some confused reporting from the Shaam News Network, who initially pointed at the regime but then appeared to change its position and attribute the event to Moscow.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights, AleppoAMC and @AksAlsear were among other sources naming the regime as the culprit.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights “helicopters bombed areas in Kafr Gom”, resulting in the deaths of “at least five people including a woman, her daughter and another child. Others were also injured – most of them women and children.”

A report by Orient said that “dozens more civilians were injured”.

Halab News listed the named victims and also noted two other unknown children casualties.
