Airwars assessment

Between two and 11 civilians including women and children were killed, and up to 30 more injured by airstrikes on the town of Orme al Kubra, according to local media – though it was unclear whether Russia or the Assad regime were to blame for the casualties. The Syrian Network for Human Rights gave conflicting reports of either regime warplanes or Russian warplanes as the culprit; however, the majority of sources, including LCCSY and Halab Today, blamed Russia.

The Shaam News Network attributed the event to both Russia regime warplanes, reporting that “Activists said warplanes struck the Nursing Institute in the town, and the homes of civilians in several neighbourhoods. More than 10 people were killed and dozens injured. Civil defense teams are working on the transfer of medical hospitals.”

The airstrikes reportedly struck Omar Bin Adb al Aziz college, which trains nurses; and those killed and injured included doctors and students at the college.

Additionally, a bus carrying civilians was reportedly struck targeted and multiple other cars were burned by the bombing.

Videos posted by Halab Today and Buraq Media show the physical destruction in the aftermath of the strikes on the college, which was said to have completely destroyed the building.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

According to local sources, at least four and as many as 11 civilians were killed, with dozens more wounded, in alleged Russia or Assad regime airstrikes on the al Sukkari neighborhood in Aleppo.

Some sources attributed the strikes to regime helicopters, while others accused Russian aircraft. Al Sukkari had been bombed relentlessly over the prior week, making it difficult to distinguish between strikes. Among the casualties were at least three men and a woman dead, and at least one child wounded.

Most sources claimed five dead. For instance, the RFS Media Office tweeted that two barrel bombs dropped on al Sukkari killed five martyrs. Alwatan News reported the same figure, and referred to civilians still trapped under the rubble. A six-storey building was completely destroyed in the strikes, according to Alayam News.

@SRG_Syria, however, tweeted that seven were killed, and according to Akhbaralaan News eleven died with 37 more wounded.

@ALAMAWI tweeted a photograph of a child wounded in the bombings.

Most reports blamed the regime, but a couple mentioned both regime helicopters and Russian aircraft.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

As many as eleven civilians including two children and two women were killed in alleged Russian airstrikes on Al Mashad in Aleppo, according to local sources.

Shaam News Network reported on “Russian aggression on different areas in Aleppo,” and said that 11 civilians had been killed in the Al Mashad neighbourhood.

It published a graphic video depicting entitled ‘Wailing and misery fill Aleppo. The massacres of the Russian craft on 4/2/2016’ [the logo on video reads ‘Aleppo Media Center’], but did not say which location in Aleppo it referred to.

An initial report by the Syrian Network for Human Rights blamed the Assad regime, putting the death toll at “at least 4 victims“.

However, a later report by SN4HR said Russian warplanes “shelled the street of Hamza mosque in Al Mashhad neighborhood that is under the control of armed opposition in Aleppo which killed 7 individuals including 2 children and 2 women.” It also posted videos from Aleppo Media Center showing dead bodies and the aftermath of the incident.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights published “pictures of the destruction cause by the raids of Russian warplanes which targeted areas in the neighborhood of al-Shaar and al-MashHad in Aleppo,” adding that there were casualties, but not providing numbers. It was not clear which photos applied to which area.

Al Jisr TV reported that six died in Al Mashad, victims of a Russian “massacre.” The Syrian Press Center reported 11 victims “including women and children” in the Al Mashad and Al Ferdous neighborhoods of Aleppo. Shahba Press counted “at least 20 civilians killed” by Russian warplanes in several neighborhoods of Aleppo, including Al Mashad.

Airwars assessment

Up to 11 civilians died, among them two young girls, and dozens of other civilians were injured in airstrikes on the Haydariya neighborhood of Aleppo according to local sources. While one report alleged that this was the work of Russia, others blamed the regime.

A local activist told Ara News that “the city of Aleppo saw the fall of a large number of dead and wounded, by aerial bombardment of the eastern neighborhoods of the city, as Syrian regime warplanes bombed the  Alhaidariya district of the city, killing eight civilians and wounding dozens of others in a preliminary toll of the massacre.”  The Syrian Network for Human Rights also attributed the death of two girls to the regime.

The White Helmets published several videos depicting the aftermath of the strikes, including very distressing footage of a young girl being pulled from the rubble during the rescue operation – though did not say who was responsible. It also published images of the aftermath of “several raids by warplanes on several of Aleppo’s neighbourhoods targeting al Ferdos, Al Maghayer, al Shi’ar, Al Haydarya“.

An initial report by Shaam News blamed Russia, reporting that “Activists said the shelling targeted civilian homes, causing the deaths of two girls and wounded five others from the same family, a father, mother and their three children who were rescued by the Civil Defense teams and transported medical hospitals amid continued shelling of the city of Aleppo.RFS News and Al Jazeera Online also blamed Russia.

However, a later report by SNN was not clear whether this was a regime or Russian incident, saying that “Assad’s planes and Russian planes renewed their bombing of civilian homes in the neighborhoods of the city of Aleppo“. It also published two videos: ‘for the fifth day Aleppo drowns in blood and the raids don’t stop‘ and ‘The chaos of death chases the neighborhoods of Aleppo and no one calls for calm‘, but did not specify the neighborhoods.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said “11 civilians including 2 children were killed by aerial bombardment targeted the neighborhoods of al-Hedaria, al-Ferdous, and al-Maghaeir“, adding that the death toll was likely to rise due to the severity of injuries. They did not say who the warplanes belonged to.

Airwars assessment

Between nine and 13 civilians including four children were reported killed  – and 20-24 others were wounded – in an alleged Russian airstrike on the Al-Thar’ra bakery in Hraytan, according to local sources.

Among the victims were personnel and customers of the bakery, including four children. The strike also hit several cars that were parked nearby, said Al Araby news.

Shaam News Network initially said that “an aerial bombardment by Russian warplanes” struck the bakery at a time when families were there purchasing their bread. It described it as a “horrific massacre” leaving dozens dead and wounded. Activists told the network that “more than nine civilians were killed, including the furnace workers” as the bakery’s oven was directly targeted. However, there was some confusion in Shaam’s reporting as it later appeared to blame the regime. In a video the reporter says: “We are now in the bakery at Hraitan that was bombed by Assad’s forces. You can see the extent of the damage. Ten martyrs were killed as a result of the bombing. All of them were civilians who had come to get their bread”. The next man speaking says that “Russian planes targeted the city with several missiles, two of them hit the only bakery serving the town. Ten people were killed and more than twenty injured.”

Initial posts by the Syrian Network for Human Rights said this was a regime attack. But in a later report, it went on to allege that Russia was responsible and put the death toll at 11, including a child. Alamawi also reported the death of a young girl (see photo) and a man. Hraitan City also attributed the incident to Russia, publishing footage of the aftermath of the strikes, which included images of remnants of cluster bombs.

According to the White Helmets, 10 people died and many more were wounded after a “warplane” launched a raid on the bakery – though they did not identify the plane. They also published a video of members of their team removing unexploded cluster bombs.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said: “Warplanes bombarded the al-Shahba oven area in Hretan, killing 7 civilians and wounded others in addition to damaging civilian property.”

LCCSY did not say who was responsible but named eight victims.

The Syrian Human Rights Committee put the death toll at 12 at least, listed the same victims, and added the name of Aboud Suleiman. Orient News said 13 were killed.
