Airwars assessment

Between five and 20 civilians died and 10 to 20 were injured – many critically –  in strikes by Ballistic missiles, according to local sources – though reports are conflicted as to whether this was the work of Russia or the Assad regime.

The Syrian Committee for Human Rights reported that 10 people died and 20 more were wounded in a strike by ballistic missiles “believed to have been launched from Russian warships in the Mediterranean“.

A video published by Qasioun depicted casualties being treated following an alleged Russian raid.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 16 people died (“11 fighters from Jabhat Al-Nusra (al-Qaeda in Levant) and Islamic factions”), three civilian males and two civilian women, when a suspected ballistic missile landed in the area of a former police station “which is now taken by Jabhat Al-Nusra (al-Qaeda in Levant) as a ‘court’ in the city of Salqin at the northwestern countryside of Idlib”. The report added that the missile targeted the area after a meeting in the “court” for reconciliation between al-Nusra Front and the Islamic movement of Ahrar al-Sham. They did not say who fired the weapons, but added that the incident was accompanied by warplanes flying overhead.

Alaan TV said that the “Judges Road” area was targeted on Sunday evening by “long-range shelling with rockets loaded with cluster bombs, resulting in 10 deaths.

A nurse working in the hospital in Salheen gave the following testimony to Alaan: “We received a large number of people who were injured – more than 20, including women and children. Some were transferred to other medical points close. There was an urgent need for blood donors as some cases suffered severe bleeding.

The activist Ahmed Istanbuli indicated that the regime was responsible: “observatories in the town of Saraqeb reported that the source was near the Aazan mountain in the countryside of Aleppo, and the weapons were fired from  regime positions in there. A missile loaded with cluster bombs exploded while another failed to explode after falling in the Sgayn”.

However, the report went on to say that others who heard the sounds of the rockets identified them as Russian and said that they had been fired by warships on the Syrian coast.

The Syrian Press Centre also that this was an attack by the regime, which led to 20 civilians dead and wounded. They named victims including one other unidentified female.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

According to Deir Ezzor is Being Slaughtered Silently, “Muhiy al Razouk and his three children” died in a Russian airstrike on Al Jneina. LCSSY also named the victim and said two of his relatives were killed and four other civilians critically wounded. It also attributed the incident to Russia.

In a video by JisrTV and a tweet by 81alhariri the incident was also reported and attributed to Russian warplanes. Other sources also mentioned the incident but did not say who was responsible.

The Syria Newsdesk reported the following: “20 civilians were killed and others were wounded today as a result of warplanes carrying out several raids on Al-Jeiy’a village under the control of the Islamic state, West Deir al-Zour.

Abu Wassim al-Dairi from Deir ez-Zor News Network said aircraft argeted the village with rockets killing at least 20 civilians, including children, and wounded dozens more who were taken to medical points in the region for treatment. The bombing also reportedly caused the complete destruction of four houses and the burning of another three, in addition to  physical damage to properties.

Orient News also reported the incident. It said that “warplanes on Sunday evening committed a massacre in the village of Al-Je’ah in the western countryside of Deir al-Zour, killing dozens and wounding many, while enabling IS control over strategic locations in the vicinity of Deir al-Zour military airport.”

Airwars assessment

“People were torn apart”, reported Aletihad Press, in an airstrike which hit Al Atarib on 16th July 2016, the Western side of Aleppo. Local media put the death toll at between two and 20 civilians – though reports were conflicted as to whether Russia or the Assad regime were responsible for the civilian harm.

SMO News blamed Russia for the warplane shelling, as did Aletihad and some local residents.

Other local sources pointed to both Russian and regime warplanes. Thiqa News posted images of the destruction which ruined buildings and destroyed cars. Some accounts said that an industrial area was struck.

According to multiple sources such as, SMO News and Thiqa News, eight people were killed in the raid which used cluster bombs and missiles. The Syrian Network for Human Rights said that at least two people had died. Only two victims, see below, were named by other sources.

Orient News interviewed two local civilians. The first man described how most of the people living in this industrial area were displaced from other parts of Aleppo. He added that it was around “lunchtime” that an alleged Russian missile killed 20 people. The second man claimed that the attack was at around 5pm. He also blamed Russian warplanes and noted that many children were also killed in the raid.

Airwars assessment

As many as 20 civilians, including women and children, were killed and up to dozens more were left wounded in alleged Russian or regime airstrikes on Hamouriya, Ghouta, Damascus, local media reported.

The strikes in Hamouriya were part of a widespread shelling of multiple neighbourhoods in eastern Ghouta on February 19th, local media reported. However, according to Zaman al-Wasl, the incident in Hamouriya was the largest and had been carried out in a total of three raids. According to the Smart News Agency, mainly residential buildings were struck.

While the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SN4HR) reported  “at least 15 fatalities”, the remaining reports mentioned 20 civilian deaths, including women and children.

Zaman al-Wasl, who put the death toll at 20, identified 14 by name; ten men and four women, and according to the surnames, some of the victims were most likely related. However, the report did not specify the age of the victims, meaning it’s unclear how many were children.

Sakr121 blamed Russia, SN4HR the regime, and  Free Deir Al Zour Radio pointed to both belligerents. But many sources didn’t apportion blame.
