Airwars assessment

At least nine civilians were killed in an airstrike in Bsanqoul, according to local media sources – though it was not clear whether Russia or the Assad regime were responsible.

Al Jazeera, who placed the death toll at nine, attributed responsibility to Russian forces. They reported that the strike killed “leader of the movement Ahrar Sham and his family in the bombing of the explosive barrel”. However, explosive barrels were known to be used by the Assad regime.

A medical facility was also reported to have been put out of service by the strikes, according to Orient News’ Anas Tracy. The civilian casualties, which Orient News placed at 10 dead and a number of others wounded, was reported to have been heavily made up of women and children.

Local activists who spoke to Smart News said that the dead were all from one family, including two women and four children.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights documented “the death of at least eight citizens of one family – they are a man and three of his children, his brother’s wife and three of her children. They were killed in the raids that were carried out by warplanes believed to be Russian after midnight of yesterday”.

Airwars assessment

Ten named civilians died and up to dozens more were wounded in airstrikes on the Nour bakery in the Al Omal neighbourhood, local media reported. The majority of sources blamed Russia – though several pointed to the Assad regime.

LCCSY, the Shaam News Network and Syrian Press Center were among local outlets attributing the event to Moscow.

According to Syria News Desk, “warplanes, thought to have been Russian, carried out more than four raids which hit the Nour bakery and residential buildings near the centre of the neighbourhood. The dead included three workers in the bakery. There were reports that people remained trapped under the rubble. The bombing resulted in the complete destruction of the bakery and the burning of three shops amid widespread material damage”.

Reporting by the Syrian Network for Human Rights was confused, with conflicting posts blaming the regime and then Russia. It said that one woman was among the dead with 15 more non-combatants wounded. Sm-sy put the number injured still higher, at “dozens”.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights joined several other sources in not apportioning blamed. It added that a child was among the ten who died.

Alaraby was the only other source that said this was the work of the regime.

Airwars assessment

Between four and 10 civilians died, including two children and two women, and up to a another dozen were wounded in air and/or artillery strikes on Al Bab, local media reported. It was unclear who the culprit was – with allegations against Turkey and Russia. Moreover, one report added that regime helicopters were also active over Al Bab on this day.

RT quoted the Russian Ministry of Defense, who said there had been joint Russian and Turkish airstrikes on ISIS locations near the city of Al Bab. The report made no mention of civilian harm.

According to Al Jazeera, “at least ten people were killed and others wounded by Russian and Turkish air raids on the city of Bab and its environs. Turkish artillery also targeted the organization’s [ISIS’s] positions in Bab and Ta’ad (east of Aleppo). Eight civilians were wounded in a renewed Turkish artillery shelling on the city.

Al-Jazeera’s correspondent pointed out that the IS media agency A’maq broadcast pictures of what it said was heavy shelling by regime helicopters struck the south and south-west of the city, pointing out that the final statistics of the number of victims are still unknown.”

The Syrian Network for Human Rights put the death toll at four (two children and two women), and attributed the civilian harm to Turkey.

Alquds alarabi  also blamed Turkey, putting the number killed at ten civilians including a child.

Al Raed La Ykazeb Ahlahu [IS propaganda] added that there were “seven dead and six wounded from one family following Turkish artillery shelling”.

Syria News Desk, also blaming Turkey, put the death toll at eight with 12 more wounded. It reported that “Turkish aerial and artillery bombardment targeted the city near the Osama bin Zayd mosque at the southern entrance of the city, which also led to the destruction of two houses completely. There was also damage to a number of residential buildings and shops and other property.”

The local time of the incident is unknown.
